ABOUT FRANCOISE LANE

Francoise Lane is a Torres Strait Islander woman whose maternal family are from Hammond Island and identifies as both Meriam and Kaurareg. PROJECTS

Synapse Accommodation Warner Street, Cairns Indij Design was the interior designer for Synapse Warner Street, Cairns, an eight bed supported accommodation facility for people with brain acquired injury. Francoise contributed to the innovation funding requirement with her design methodology focusing on the stimulation of sensory memory reconnection to country through the use of colour, textures and smells. The landscaping design team bought into the concept selecting plants eg signal planting and fragrant plants, from the residents intake area. Research supports what was originally an intuitive design methodology approach by Francoise.

AFL Cape York Girls Boarding Facility

Indij Design provided cultural design review and intergration of artworks for AFL Cape York’s (AFLCY) Girls House, Redlinch. In collaboration with AFLCY Operations Manager Kristine Van, Francoise identified inclusion of artworks from community art centres including Wujal Wujal, Lockhart River, Aurukun, Pompuraaw, Badu, Hopevale and Milingimbi. UMI Arts member artists artwork were also purchased including Delissa Walker and Nerelle Nicol. Artworks were selected with an intention of creating visual connection for boarders with their country in and around the facility. Another goal was to create linkages between artists and the AFLCY community into the future. AFLCY and Indij Design wanted to demonstrate their support for local artists and community art centres through the purchase of authentic indigenous artwork in a facility housing young indigenous women from remote communities. The facility is scheduled to open in late January 2019.

Cairns City Centre Alive Shields Street Heart, Cairns Regional Council As project leader for Indij Design, Francoise coordinated and facilitated engagements around the urban landscape design for Shields Street Heart with the indigenous community of Cairns. Indij Design then worked with CRC Senior Landscape Architect in translating engagement outcomes into the landscape design of Shields St. Groups engaged included the two native title claimant groups of Cairns and the broader indigenous community who call Cairns home. Interactions were particularly sensitive as at that time the native title claims were in the mediation processes. Adding to the tensions were past interactions between CRC and the claimant groups and the development of new CRC policy around recognition of traditional owners. Francoise was also a member of the indigenous art advisory committee for selections of Shields Street Heart artwork submissions.

DESIGN REVIEW AND BRIEF WRITING

NRL Cowboys House (Townsville) – Francoise provided design review as part of i4Architecture design team for NRL House. The design planning changed significantly to respond to cultural behaviours and beliefs impacting on what makes for a safe and welcoming ‘home’ away from home. Boarder intake areas include the Gulf of Carpentaria communities and as far north as the Torres Strait. The project was delivered as a design and construct.

NRL Cowboys House Girls (Townsville) – Indij Design (led by Francoise Lane) developed the design brief in response to consultations with the Qld Department of Public Works and Housing, Cowboys Community Foundation, key stakeholders and user groups. Indij Design provided special modelling to accompany the brief.

Thursday Island Student Boarding Expansion – Indij Design (led by Francoise Lane) undertook the high level community engagement on behalf of Qld Department of Public Works and Housing. The purpose of the consultation was to establish the need for and community support for an expansion to student boarding on Thursday Island. The Department secured Commonwealth funding in providing community need for the expansion of boarding on Thursday Island. Indij Design wrote the design brief for the project considerate of and in response to a stakeholder and user group design workshop.
