Historic Chester

The HCBA is proud of our town. For over 200 years, Chester has been the best blend of town and country. Chester hums with modern commerce, but is never far from its roots. “Black River:” Chester’s Colonial American Origins The earliest inhabitants were the Minisink and the first settlers of European ancestry arrived in the 1730s. The Minisink called this forested area with its flowing river “Alamatunk,” meaning “black earth bottom,” and this inspired the first name for the new arrivals’ settlement; “Black River.”The American Revolution The settlers were farmers, but as they cultivated their land, they also founded the town which became Chester. Its first businesses included taverns, distilleries, Morris County’s first blacksmith shop, a tannery, and many grist, saw, and flour mills. There was mining, but it was modest compared to the town’s iron-boom that came a century later.Loving the Land Whether as preserved farmland, parks, or forests, the bulk of the Chester’s landscape is protected from further development. Chester’s two main parks, Chubb Park and Tiger Brook Park, demonstrate its commitment to providing fields for recreation and sports. Over 50 miles of trails appeal to avid and casual hikers and naturalists.Chester Today Chester has always maintained its historical identity. Main Street is the center of community life.
