The fourth quarter of 2019 continued an upward growth trend for job postings, which were up approximately 37% across the region over the same time-period in 2018, and increased 13.2% over quarter three of 2019. The combined area of Fairfax County and Falls Church continued to have the
largest number of employer job postings in the region, accounting for 57.4% of quarter four job postings. All local jurisdictions in northern Virginia had an increase in the number of job postings from quarter three, as well as an increase over the same time-period in 2018. Job postings in cybersecurity increased to more than 11% of total job postings for the current quarter. The number of health care job postings as a percent of the total demand decreased from the previous quarter, but the total number of positions advertised this quarter is nearly double the amount from quarter four of 2018. Employer job postings increased the most in Loudoun and Prince William over the same quarter of 2018, continuing the yearlong trend for those two jurisdictions. The region remains the number one location for employers advertising positions in cybersecurity, with approximately 8.2% of all quarter four cybersecurity job postings nationwide coming from northern Virginia.

NOVA’s Office of Strategic Partnerships and Workforce Innovation collaborates with employers, economic development organizations, education institutions, community-based organizations, and local governments in the northern Virginia region to address the skills gap and develop a robust talent pipeline.

The top 25 companies advertised a combined 22,322 job postings during the quarter, comprising 17.1% of all job postings regionally. This represents an increase in the market share of the top 25 employers with the most job postings over quarter three. General Dynamics remained the top employer by number
of job postings during every quarter of 2019. New company entries to the top 25 list this quarter included Information Management Group, Procession Systems, Varsity Tutors, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. Nearly all of the top 25 employers advertising open positions are in the government contracting and technology sectors, with a few exceptions in health care, retail, and hospitality. The top hiring industry continues to be professional, scientific, and technical services, which advertised 27,226 job postings this quarter, an increase of 41.1% over quarter three.*Requested by employers by number of job postings.

The unemployment rate decreased slightly to 2.0% during the fourth quarter, creating an even tighter labor market for employers looking for talent. This list highlights the top 25 occupations advertised by employers in the fourth quarter of 2019, categorized by their 8-digit O*NET title. The O*NET
classification system is made up of 974 unique occupations; these 25 occupations listed here accounted for 62,105 job postings, or 47.5% of all employer demand in the fourth quarter. Software developers continue to be the most in-demand occupation, with 11,233 postings in the fourth quarter, and 11 of the top 25 positions advertised are information technology-related occupations. The median salary of all advertised jobs was $70,302, which is slightly higher than the median salary advertised in previous quarters of 2019.
