Thank you for giving help and hope to neighbours in need in 2019!A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. —John 1:16 ESV

I want you to know that you are a beacon of hope to people in the Toronto area who are hungry and hurting. I hope you’ll read some of their stories within this Annual Report—like John, Maria, Alysia, and Christian—and be encouraged by the impact you’re making in their lives.

But for every uplifting story shared here, there are countless thousands of other stories that belong to people who are desperate for a hot, nutritious meal, safe shelter, and the life-changing programs that can help them begin again.

Please read and share this annual ministry report with friends, family, and colleagues because the needs are huge and growing in your community. Yet, when we work together and extend compassion to our neighbours in need, lives are truly saved and changed!

Thank you for standing with The Scott Mission to make a difference in the lives of those among us who are hungry and in need. It was a privilege to serve alongside you in 2019, and I know that together we will help even more men, women, and families in 2020.

John thoroughly enjoyed being a businessman and was living a good, prosperous life until he became embroiled in a legal matter that consumed him for three long years. By the end, John was completely wiped out and just a shell of his former self. “I lost everything,” he says.

He turned to The Scott Mission and found the help he needed—food, shelter, clothing, and encouragement that life could be good again. He was very moved when we prayed for him and shared that God had plans for him—on earth and for eternity.

Today, John is busy rebuilding his life. He’s secure in Christ’s love and grateful for help from friends like you, which encourages

him daily. “Without The Scott Mission, I wouldn’t have survived,” John says. “When you’re at your lowest, if you need real help, the Mission will give it.”

“I really thank the Mission’s donors . . . a lot,” he says with a broad smile. “I’m the happiest man in the world.”

Thank you for your compassion and generosity that are impacting lives like John’s each day! With your gift again today, the Mission can continue to provide meals, clothing, spiritual healing, counselling, and more for men who are hungry, hurting, homeless, and without hope.

The lives of a great many men have been impacted thanks to your support of our Men’s Ministry. Thank you for meeting important needs through—

Christian first came to Scott Mission Camp when he was just seven years old. But even at such a young age, he knew he wanted to come back every year!

“Everyone told me about the camp . . . how it’s so fun, how everyone is kind and loving, and how it’s all about Jesus. That had everything to do with it,” Christian recalls.

An athlete with hopes for a career in basketball, Christian loves that there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy—rock climbing, mountain biking, archery, swimming, and more. But he also values the time spent with others, building friendships, and deepening his relationship with God.

Christian is currently enrolled in our Foundations Program to hone leadership skills he could use as a camp counsellor one day. He makes a point to invite every young person he meets to give Scott Mission Camp a try.

“I tell them all the activities we do and how much fun they’ll be having during the week. Scott Mission Camp is a family that makes you feel free to talk about anything you’re going through.”

Thank you for your ongoing support of The Scott Mission to ensure Scott Mission Camp happens each year, impacting the lives of more youth and teens in your community!

Alysia could never have guessed what an incredible impact The Scott Mission would have in her life and that of her family. It all started when she began looking for daycare for her toddler. She found a spot available at the O’Connor Family Centre.

“It’s a day care, but not JUST a daycare,” Alysia says. “I love that there’s a real family-oriented feeling. Everyone is just so warm and welcoming. There are always smiles. It’s comforting to know my child will be around all that.”

“Also, if I come into trouble and need to use the food bank, it’s good to have such a resource nearby.”

Alysia is deeply thankful for the Mission’s caring donors who have been such a huge help to her family. “My son is always happy and excited to come to daycare, and I’m happy to know my son is in good hands,” she says with a smile. “On behalf of myself and my kids, thank you so much. We appreciate you!”

Your gift today will help The Scott Mission and the O’Connor Family Centre reach more struggling families with the practical and compassionate help they need. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and partnership!

Maria’s first thought was, “No. I don’t want help.”

But like so many people in the greater Toronto area, her income was often stretched beyond her capacity to feed her family once the rent and utilities were paid. So she took the advice of her sister and walked through The Scott Mission’s doors . . .

The kindness of staff and volunteers was a huge comfort to Maria, giving her assistance with everything from groceries to Christmas gifts for her children!

Even Maria’s son could see the visible relief on her face once she’d returned with much-needed groceries in hand. “It was all really helpful

for me and my kids. They’re happy, and it was good to know they would have a gift at Christmas.”

“I really appreciate The Scott Mission and the donors,” Maria says with a smile. “Thank you for giving back. You’ve been a friend to someone you don’t know, and I’m grateful for that.”

Thank you for partnering with The Scott Mission again today to help more struggling women and families across Toronto get the extra help they need!
