Dear Friends, Our caring and compassionate donors, volunteers and staff continue to help us grow our services so that we can support more people of all ages with the mental health services they need and deserve. We have expanded our services in places where convenient to our clients – in their homes and schools and in their primary care practices. In the past year, Sweetser’s school‐based clinicians celebrated 25 years as a program serving K‐12 students from York to the Bangor area. Now we’ve expanded the program to serve college‐aged students, with a new contract in the past year with the Southern Maine Community College. We began a partnership with the Bangor Housing Authority in the past year – integrating our clinicians within their organization to serve their clients. Since then our services have expanded to include clients of housing authorities in Old Town, Brewer, Bath and Portland. Our integration of clinicians and psychiatric staff in primary care settings continues with new and growing partnerships with Martin’s Point Health Care, InterMed and York Hospital. Sweetser’s first residential program for adults has opened. Waterfall Place in Topsham is a six‐bed Private Non‐Medical Institution (PNMI) that serves adults with major mental illness. This community‐based housing is designed to build skills for a successful transition to independent and/or less supportive living environment. Our residential services for children in Belfast and Saco recently hosted a visit by the Casey Family Programs. The national foundation is focused on funding and advancing best practices to influence long‐lasting improvements to the safety and success of children, families and the communities where they live. Sweetser was selected for the visit because of our family work and emphasis on reunification. We very much appreciate your support for Sweetser on behalf of the children, families and adults we serve. Sincerely,

Students in the automotive maintenance and repair, and woodworking technology programs at Sweetser’s Eslie J. Parquette School in Saco have had the wonderful experience of working with Bob Tkacik, a volunteer for more than seven years. In the spring of 2018, Bob and Sweetser staff decided that students in the program were up to the challenge to compete in the northern New England region World of Wheels Car and Trade Show, held at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. They were right! Sweetser’s entry won third place in their first year of competition. And after sizing up their competition, the team returned the next year and brought home the first place award! This was a huge achievement – Sweetser was the only Maine school represented among 11 other trade schools. It was an experience of a lifetime for the students, who also had the opportunity to participate in a career fair for future mechanics while at the event. The biggest win is the confidence the students have gained from working closely with such a special volunteer.

We are excited to announce that this year’s winner of the Laurence S. Garland Award is Rose Sack, a financial analyst and dedicated Sweetser employee for 19 years. When Rose isn’t at work she spends her personal time making the community better. For years she has been organizing the Sweetser “Stigma Stomper” team for the NAMI Walk. She has also volunteered with the local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and through the years has fostered more than two dozen children. Named for former longtime Sweetser Board Member Laurence S. Garland, Jr., the award is presented annually to a staff member who personifies exceptional service to Sweetser and the greater community.

New Sweetser Service for Adults Located in Topsham, Waterfall Place is a 6‐bed Private Non‐Medical Institution (PNMI) that serves adults with major mental illness. This community‐based housing is designed to build skills for a successful transition to independent and/or less supportive living environment. Clinical oversight, management and interven‐tion are delivered with a focus on increasing independence and self‐sufficiency, including functional skills, increasing self‐understanding, crisis prevention and self‐management.

The living room is one of the comfortable spaces within the new residential facility.

We were thankful for a visit last spring by the Serve with Liberty volunteers from Liberty Mutual who helped beautify our Saco campus during their community day of service.

Sweetser’s Developmental Services program in Bangor helps adults achieve wonderfully rich and fulfilling lives, including winning 2nd place at the Area Penobscot/Piscataquis and Hancock County Special Olympics Bowling Tournament! Direct Support Professional Chris Cornejo‐Pearson, in the photo at right, served as coach for the event.

Sweetser has wonderful volunteers!

Paul Chamberlain’s first donation to Sweetser arrived in the mail in 1977. His support has continued consistently for 42 years! During his many years of giving, Sweetser programs and services have grown considerably, but the mission has remained constant. Says Paul, “I have always been impressed with the things Sweetser does for children and families who need the help. Where would they be without Sweetser?”

Having been raised by another family on a farm in Greenland, New Hampshire, Paul can relate to the difficulties some families go through. In his early childhood, it was decided that Mr. Chamberlain would be placed with another family on a farm where they could provide for him. He remained on the farm for 15 years. Paul learned adversity and many skills on the farm, including a strong work ethic and to never give up. He developed a deep sense of appreciation for the family who raised him and places like Sweetser.

Mr. Chamberlain recently visited the Sweetser campus in Saco for the first time. He especially enjoyed visiting the school and seeing students learn hands‐on work experiences on the farm, reminding him of his youth. “I didn’t realize Sweetser was doing so many things for these children,” said Paul. Sweetser is grateful to Paul for his continued interest and support. He became a member of the Cornelius Sweetser Heritage Society in 2017 in recognition of his longtime dedication and commitment.

Loyal support to Sweetser continues to make a tremendous impact on our services to more than 20,000 children and adults. At a time when state and federal funding sources are getting tighter, the importance of philanthropic contributions has never been greater. We are very grateful to our many friends, foundations, corporations, civic clubs, and small businesses for your generosity and commitment to help Sweetser create promising futures for those in need. If you or anyone else are interested in taking a tour of our campus in Saco or Belfast to see how your contributions are being utilized, please do not hesitate to contact me or the Development office at (207) 294‐4484. Thank you for giving hope and promise to those we serve.
