Smith’s & Sakata has utilised the Covenant’s SPGs to help identify where and how to optimise packaging. • Packagingmaterial efficiency is compared across its manufacturing sites monthly, to highlight best-in-class performance and toidentify opportunities for improvement. • During its innovation process, Smith’s & Sakata record and communicateoutcomes of the SPGs to ensure that they are considered during new product development and launch processes. Forexample, its artwork approval process requires the appropriate recycling or disposal logo and/or message to beincorporated, to inform consumers of correct packaging disposal. • To drive improvement, regular evaluation ofpackaging design occurs across the ANZ business. As a result of a comprehensive packaging design review in 2017,Smith's & Sakata identified opportunities for packaging materials use reduction across 7 brands and more that 20 packsizes. Significant factory and transit trials were undertaken in 2018 to validate the opportunity. The implementationstarted in August 2018 and will spread over 18 months.
