  • April 2020. Due to Covid-19, we are experiencing an unprecedented time in history; however, we are grateful for the support of our community of followers and donors who are really committed to our cause.

As many others, we attempt to foresee and take actions to meet the current and potential consequences that may affect our community. We will be stronger after this crisis, this extreme situation will always make us remember that our work benefits more than 36,000 beneficiaries. Despite the economic context of Argentina, the Annual report 2019 documents that we were able to transform disappointing and negative situations and setbacks into opportunities for learning, care and growth.

Within the areas of Education, Community, Disability, Seniors, Sports and Health, we have enhanced the quality of life of children, adults and the elderly in Gonzalez Catan and surrounding areas.

For more than 50 years, we have achieved a real social change there and met the needs of the community that others were not able to meet. Given the current context, we have to increase our efforts to continue the mission entrusted to us by Father Mario.

Three generations have already grown up and developed under the protection offered by “Obra del Padre Mario.”

We have joined HelpArgentina (https://www.helpargentina.org/es/ong/dt/id/135/obra-del-padre-mario-pantaleo) and entered into an agreement with CESAL NGO (https://www.cesal.org/argentina) with the aim to provide support and bring transparency to the lines of action of the “Obra” in Spain.

We could perform our work in 2019 thanks to the support provided by each of our donors, strategic partnerships, collaborators and work teams. Day by day, we work together to fulfill the dream of Father Mario, our founder.

Father Mario said “We are seeking a community with a sole body, a sole desire, a sole will and a sole sacrifice”

We are committed to our work and will always be. We know we can count on you.

As ever, thank you very much!

LIFE AND WORK OF FATHER MARIO

    05

Giuseppe Mario Pantaleo was born in Pistoia, Italy, on August 1, 1915.

In 1924, he and his family come to Argentina and settle in the city of Cordoba. Mario studies at Colegio Pio X and then continues as an aspirant in the Salesian formation centre in Colonia Vignaud, Cordoba. In 1931, Mario returns to Italy and continues his formation at the Salesian seminary in the Diocese of Arezzo, the seminary of Viterbo and the seminary of Salerno. Mario finishes his studies and is ordained priest in the Diocese of Matera. He celebrates his first Mass in Pomarico on December 8, 1944.

In 1948, Mario returns to Argentina and exercises his priestly ministry in several cities in the province of Santa Fe until he asks for authorization to move to Buenos Aires in 1958.

People become aware of Father Mario’s ability to diagnose and provide relief from physical and mental suffering. Because of this gift of healing, he gains popularity and thousands of people wish to meet him.

Father Mario said, “I am the guitar, the guitar player is in Heaven and He is the one who truly does everything.”

He buys a plot of land in Gonzalez Catan and starts to build a small house. By the end of the 1960s, Aracelis “Perla” Gallardo meets him seeking relief from a health condition she was undergoing. After she recovers, she and her family decide to help him build a church and establish social work.

In 1972, the foundation stone of “Capilla Cristo Caminante” [Pilgrim Christ Chapel] is laid. In 1975, the sculpture of “Cristo Caminante” is placed. The Chapel is named after Pilgrim Christ and Father Mario celebrates the first Mass on December 8.

Most of the programmes of the “Obra del Padre Mario” that are nowadays in force were set between 1976 and 1992.

Father Mario Pantaleo dies on August 19, 1992. Thousands of people attend the funeral at the chapel and follow the procession before reaching Father Mario’s first destination in the Cemetery of Recoleta. Thousands more follow him to his final destination in his “Obra” in Gonzalez Catan
