JanuaryCraig PetersMelbourne, Australia“The Australian Alps, in the state of Victoria, get walloped with impressive winter storms that come up from Antarctica. This photo was taken on a ski trip on the flanks of Mount Feathertop, two days after such a storm. Thick ice can still be seen coating the branches of the Snow Gum trees. My friends are coming up behind me on the freshly laid ‘skinning’ track. The silhouette of Mount Buffalo is visible to the right of the setting sun.”
FebruaryYing WuU.S.“A grove of trees at the end of the redwood forest steam train route near Felton, California.”
MarchLucas PitcherU.K.“I took this image of the aurora borealis over a traditional kota tipis made by the Sami people of Lapland on my fourth trip to Finland.”
AprilAlessandro CavallinItaly“A sunset over Milan, Italy. This phenomenon is due to suspended dust coming from fires in the forests of the western Alps.”
MayChaoran LiChina“At La Jolla Cove, San Diego, crowds of sea lions gathered on the shore reef enjoying the afterglow of sunset. One of them lifted its head and it seemed it was trying to raise up the sun from the sea level.”
JuneManoj KumarIndia“This photo is from my last trekking trip to Chandrashila Peak. Chandrashila is the summit of the Tungnath Mountains. It literally means “Moon Rock” and is located at a height of about 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. This peak provides views of the Himalayas, including Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks.”
JulyJi SuShenyang, China“Guangzhou, one of the most prosperous cities in China. There are two skyscrapers we call the Guangzhou International Finance Centre and the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre.”
AugustDon ReedAcworth, Georgia“Sunlight reflected from the surface of the moon is multicolored, the hues indicating the mineral composition of the surface. Blue areas are titanium-rich, dark orange/brown areas are iron-rich, and the light orange/yellow highland areas consist primarily of aluminosilicates.”
SeptemberFlorian RieckWaldbronn, Germany“Nauset Light in Eastham, Massachusetts, is the last of the Three Sisters lighthouses to remain active. It is located at the end of a bike path through the beautiful landscape of Cape Cod.”
OctoberJerry HeBeijing, China“A beautiful autumn scene in Yuanmingyuan Park, Beijing.”
NovemberMark PfeiferWilmington, Delaware“Conowingo Dam near Darlington, Maryland, attracts watchers of bald eagles, especially in November. Photographers line up along the bank of the Susquehanna River to get a view of the birds. The water from the hydroelectric dam stuns the fish in the river, making for easier catches by the bald eagles. This year I rented a higher-performing camera than what I usually use, and spent several mornings watching the bald eagles. This shot highlights the power of the eagle as it flies off with its prey.”
DecemberMatteo BrioschiSpain“During sunny days in Lanzarote (Canary Islands), Famara Beach is one of the best spots for surfers in Europe. At this evening’s sundown surfers came across the rocks to ride some nice waves.”
