The Oregon Police Department consists of 18 sworn officers that include a Chief, Lieutenant, Detective Sergeant, three Patrol Sergeants, Detective, a K-9 Unit, School Resource Officer, Patrol Officers, three civilian employees, and 11 part-time crossing guards. The police department serves a population of approximately 10,000 and handles approximately 10,000 calls for service each year. The mission of the Oregon Police Department is to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse community to improve their quality of life. The Oregon Area Fire/EMS District is dedicated to providing quality, timely and professional emergency services to those who live in, and travel through the communities that we serve. The Oregon Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to a population of approximately 17,000 residence and covers 44 square miles out of one station. Staffing consists of 36 members, which includes full time staff, paid-on-call, and interns who respond to approximately 1,700 calls for service each year. Oregon Fire Department offers a number of educational programs that can be accessed by our community members. We offer CPR/AED and first aid training, and emergency preparedness programs for businesses and individuals. We also have certified child passenger technicians that can install/inspect child safety seat and educate parents on how to safely transport their children. Outdoor ActivitiesBiking & Walking TrailsKeller Alpine Meadows Park Walking PathA 2-mile walking/biking path thats runs adjacent to Alpine Parkway, with a parking area located on Netherwood Street.
Oregon Rotary Bike TrailThe Oregon Rotary Bike trail begins at the corner of Netherwood Rd. and Cusick Pkwy. and runs all the way to Fish Hatchery Rd. Park at either end and enjoy miles of scenic views along the trail. It is a favorite spot among local bikers, runners and walkers.
Badger State Trail *The Badger State Trail is a 40 mile path that runs from Madison to the Illinois border, going through Oregon along the way. The closest trailhead can be found near the intersection of Purcell Rd. and Borchert Rd. The Badger State Trail connects to the following trails: Capital City, Military Ridge, and Sugar River.
*State Trail Pass RequirementsPurchase a required trail pass before using a state trail at any DNR service center, on the phone or at a self-service station at a trailhead. Elving Kjellstrom Memorial Park - 895 Market StreetIncludes a 25-square-foot pavilion area with benches, and a memorial plaque honoring Elving Kjellstrom, the founder of Wisco Industries in Oregon. A sidewalk connects to Market Street and the Village’s bike path on Braun Rd.
Jaycee Park - 275 North Perry ParkwayLocated east of N. Oak Street. Includes a paved path, wooden bridges, ball diamonds, playing fields, a park shelter, playground equipment, restrooms, sledding hill, wooded area and prairie.
Jon Blanchard Dog Park - 801 Park StreetA 9.2-acre dog park with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. Annual or daily passes are available at the Village Hall 117 Spring St.
Keller Alpine Meadows Park - 460 Netherwood StreetA 108.73-acre park located between County Highway CC and Netherwood Road. Includes a paved pathway, bridge, benches, picnic tables, bike fixing station, a parking lot, informational board, wetlands, and wildlife habitat areas.
Kiser Fireman’s Park - 245 Brook StreetLocated on the corner of N. Oak Street and Brook Street. Includes a skate park, tennis courts, playing fields, softball diamonds, picnic shelter, picnic tables, paved path and restrooms. Site of the Annual Oregon Summer Fest!
Lerner Conservation Park - 400 Netherwood Street and N. Burr Oak AveA 65.38-acre grassy area located adjacent to Keller Alpine Meadows Park. Includes trails, an outdoor classroom, information kiosk, and wooden bridge. Often used by local schools for projects.

History
THE CONFLICT IN WORLD WAR I THAT ENDED 100 YEARS AGO . . .
The monument that stands in the center of downtown Oregon was originally erected to the veterans of World War I. It is believed to be the first monument
erected in the United States in tribute to the veterans of World War I. The idea for a memorial originated in 1919, when residents
formed the Community Memorial Association. Along with the Village of Oregon, Towns of Oregon, Rutland, Dunn and
Fitchburg, contributions were solicited ranging from 50 cents to $25. By early 1920, the association had raised $1,600.
The 9-foot column of polished Hurricane Island granite was preserved from Chicago’s old City Hall. It was shipped to Oregon by rail, unloaded on Jefferson
Street, and brought to the center of town drawn by 6 teams of horses. The monument was inscribed with the
phrase “ERECTED IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR 1914-1918”.

The dedication of the monument was held on June 20, 1920. An elaborate pageant, with characters in costume, was held in the park in the afternoon. Following the pageant, everyone assembled by the monument for its unveiling performed by Christopher and Cecelia Johnson, Gold Star parents of William Johnson, the only soldier from Oregon killed in action in WWI. The keynote speaker was U.S. Senator Irvine Lenroot. He was slated to become the Republican Vice Presidential nominee at their convention in Chicago. Instead he committed to be in Oregon for the dedication. In doing so, he lost the nomination to Calvin Coolidge who became president upon the death of Warren Harding.
At the time, the population of Oregon was 850; but the dedication event drew hundreds of people from Oregon and the surrounding area communities.
In the 1980s, a rededication was held and a polished granite bench inscribed “DEDICATED TO ALL VETERANS” was added. Today this area is a memorial to ALL veterans.
