Basic Intraoral Radiographic TechniquesClinical Certification Course for Dental AuxiliaryTarget Audience: Dental Assistants

Instructor: Dr. Dixon

This course is designed for dental auxiliaries who wish to refine their fundamental radiographic skills, whether for a film-based or digital system on both adult and pediatric patients. The course consists of 1-2 hours lecture, followed by hands-on clinical participation on radiographic mannequins for the remainder of the course. The SIU-SDM radiology department has seven operatories and is equipped with intraoral film and digital sensors, and digital capture for panoramic and lateral cephalometric images.

Coronal Polishing & Pit/Fissure SealantsClinical Certification Course for Dental AuxiliaryTarget Audience: Dental Assistants

This course will provide dental assistants with the proper educational requirements as stated in Illinois law for application of pit and fissure sealants and coronal polishing which includes didactic study in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and dental emergencies followed by a written exam. This course will also include two hours of clinical experience on pit and fissure sealants and two hours on coronal polishing. The clinical instruction on coronal polishing will include work performed on a human subject.

Each participant must agree to act as a patient for coronal polishing. In addition, each participant must follow the OSHA guidelines for infection control and use of clinical Personal Protective Equipment (i.e., gloves, mask, eyewear and clinic gown).

At completion of this course and prior to being permitted to perform these expanded functions in Illinois, the dental assistant must meet the following requirements:

• Dental assistant is 18 years of age and has been working as a dental assistant for at least 1,000 hours.• The supervising dentist must personally observe the successful placement of six sealants on a patient(s) by the dental assistant.• Successful participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Local AnesthesiaClinical Certification Course for Dental AuxiliaryTarget Audience: Dental Hygienists

Fees are payable in full two weeks prior to course date and include continental breakfast, lunch and course handouts. (The Malamed text is not included in the fee and must be independently purchased.)

This four-day course will satisfy the State of Illinois expanded function training requirements to allow registered dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia under the general supervision of a licensed dentist.

ISDS member dental hygienists can use their $25 CE voucher for this course.

Instructors: Dr. Flick, Dr. Miloro and Dr. Skiba

Course content provides a review of necessary knowledge on the uses and potential complications of administering local anesthesia. A pre-course reading assignment from Dr. Stanley F. Malamed’s Handbook of Local Anesthesia (5th or 6th edition) assures a foundation of understanding that is reinforced by lectures. Topics include the local anesthesia armamentarium, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, pharmacology of vasoconstrictors, mandibular and maxillary anatomy, the trigeminal nerve, possible complications, post-treatment instructions, and accurate record keeping.

• Lab practice sessions emphasize grasp and technique and use sensor-active Frasaco/Practicon manikins and other injection placement exercises.• Injection instruction occurs in clinic and involves supervised administration of maxillary, mandibular and block injections using xylocaine 2%, mepivicaine 3%, and topical benzocaine.• In clinic, participants must agree to receive, as well as administer, injections in the clinic. Hygienists who are in the first trimester of pregnancy or at medical risk for any other reason should seek the consent of their primary physician before registering.• Course size is limited to 24 persons per session. While a test of basic knowledge based on pre-course reading is given on the first course day, successful course completion is based solely on competency demonstrated in the clinic.

Anesthesia/Sedation Assistant Monitoring Clinical Certification Course for Dental AuxiliaryTarget Audience: Dental Assistants & Dental Hygienists

Prerequisite: Must be currently certified in BLS for healthcare providers or its equivalent. A copy of your current BLS card must accompany registration form. The Illinois State Dental Society is an approved provider of continuing education in the State of Illinois. Illinois dental hygienists will earn 12 continuing education credits when completing this course.

Instructors: Dr. Flick, Dr. Milano, Dr. Rawson and Dr. MisischiaThis course is offered as a continuing education experience for dental auxiliary who work in dental or oral surgery offices in the State of Illinois where sedation or general anesthesia is administered. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the Illinois Dental Practice Act and the Rules Administering the Dental Practice Act. This course includes both lecture and clinical exposure which is completed at one of the two dental schools in Illinois. A certificate of completion will be issued upon course completion.

Course Objectives and Competencies:• Become familiar with the anatomy and physiology involved with monitoring and airway maintenance in the sedated dental patient.• Obtain a basic understanding of the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems as they relate to anesthesia and sedation.• Become familiar with the health questionnaire and its application for the evaluation of the patient undergoing anesthesia/sedation and be able to link this information to the ASA classification.• Develop an understanding of the levels of sedation/anesthesia and be able to recognize these levels in the patient under dental sedation.• Acquire the skills required for monitoring the sedated patient, including monitoring of blood pressure, pulse, respirations temperature and level of consciousness.• Learn to operate automated monitoring devices including the EKG and pulse-oximeter.• Learn to complete the anesthesia record and make appropriate monitoring entries during the procedure and during recovery.• Learn basic management protocols for anesthesia related emergencies and become more competent in assisting the dentist in their management.

This course for monitoring and administration of nitrous oxide by the allied dental personnel is designed to meet the certification requirements of the State of Illinois for expanded functions. This course will include both didactic and clinical components in the monitoring and administration of nitrous oxide and advanced airway management. It will provide instruction in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and dental emergencies, as they relate to the use of nitrous oxide in the dental office. This course is open to all qualified dental assistants for monitoring and dental hygienists for administering. After successful completion of this course the dental assistant can return to the private office and provide expanded function for the dental team and the monitoring of nitrous oxide, while the dental hygienists will be able to start and stop the flow of gas.

Coronal Scaling Clinical Certification Course for Dental AuxiliaryTarget Audience: Dental Assistants

Prerequisite: Must be currently certified in BLS for healthcare providers or its equivalent. A copy of your current BLS card must accompany registration form. The Illinois State Dental Society is an approved provider of continuing education in the State of Illinois.

Instructors: Dr. Dickey, Dr. Rawson and Barb Davis, RDH

A dental assistant who has at least 2,000 hours of direct clinical patient care experience and who has successfully completed an approved coronal polishing certification course is eligible to attend the coronal scaling course.

The dental assistant is limited to the use of hand instruments, and the coronal scaling shall only be utilized on patients who are eligible for Medicaid or who are uninsured and whose household income is not greater than 200% of the federal poverty level. The coronal scaling is limited to above the gum line, supragingivally, on the clinical crown of the tooth of a patient 12 years of age or younger, who have an absence of periodontal disease and who are not medically compromised or individuals with special needs.

This course includes 16 hours of instruction in both didactic and clinical manikin instruction in the areas of study in dental anatomy, public health dentistry, medical history, dental emergencies, and managing the pediatric patient.

After successfully completion of the course, the supervising dentist must observe and approve the completion of six full mouth supragingival scaling procedures.

Coronal Polishing & Pit Fissure Sealants

Dr. Keith Dickey Dr. Dickey graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry, and established a general dental practice for six years in his home-town of South Bend before accepting a full-time appointment at Illinois Central College in Peoria; where he began his academic career in dental education. After teaching at SIU School of

Dental Medicine for thirty-five years, he is currently Director for Continuing Education and Alumni Services as well as an emeritus associate professor at SIU-SDM. Serving over twenty years as a member of the ISDS Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. Dickey is the first ISDS member who has served as both the President of ISDS and the ISDS Foundation. In 2015, he retired from his private practice of general dentistry in East Alton, IL.

Dr. Debra Schwenk Dr. Schwenk is currently the Compliance Officer at SIU School of Dental Medicine, her alma mater, where she has taught full-time for 15 years and part-time for ten years. Previously, she was the Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs, Interim Department Chair of Growth, Development and Structure and coordinated the

school’s community outreach activities, which included teaching preventive procedures such as sealants and coronal polishing to dental students. Previous to her full-time teaching commitment, she owned a general practice in Alton. She received a Master’s in Public Administration from SIUE in 2003. Dr. Schwenk has served as a trustee for ISDS and as a member of the Dental Education Committee. She is currently a board examiner for the Central Regional Dental Testing agency.

Barbara Davis, RDH Ms. Davis is a part-time clinical instructor at Lewis and Clark Community College dental hygiene program and retired as a dental hygienist at SIU School of Dental Medicine after 25 years of service.

Dr. Brian Caraba Dr. Caraba is a graduate of University of Illinois College of Dentistry and has been a general dentist in private practice since 1995. He has been involved with ISDS Auxillary training since 2007. Dr. Caraba is committed to excellence in Dentistry and continues to educate himself through many advanced courses including oral

surgery, esthetic dentistry, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and implantology. He enjoys practicing dentistry and is enthusiastic with educating his staff, patients, and the dental community.

Dr. Marta Demski Dr. Demski is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. She is a general dentist currently practicing in her hometown of Park Ridge, IL. Dr. Demski is an active member of the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, Dental Arts Club, and Windy City

Seminars branch of the Seattle Study Club. Dr. Demski has served as an instructor for the ISDS Expanded Duties Dental Course on Coronal Polishing and Application of Pit and Fissure Sealants since graduation.

Jennifer Bereckis, RDHMs. Bereckis is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Executive Director of Clinical Operations at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. She is responsible for yearly HIPAA, OSHA and Infection Control training for the entire College. In her faculty role, she is the Component Director for a Practice Management course taught in the

DMD Curriculum. Ms. Bereckis serves on the University’s Infection Control Committee, Needle Stick Committee and the University Senate. Ms. Bereckis is also chair of the Illinois State Dental Society Committee on Dental Education and a Consultant Board Examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments, formally known as North East Regional board.

Dr. Debra DixonDr. Dixon, Associate Professor, is Section Head of Diagnostic Sciences in the Department of Applied Dental Medicine at Southern Illinois School of Dental Medicine. Also, as Section Head of Radiology, she is in charge of all Radiology didactic classes and clinical instruction. Dr. Dixon received her DMD degree from SIU-SDM, and an MSc in

Dental Radiology from the University of London.

Dr. William G. FlickDr. Flick has been on the teaching faculty of the UIC College of Dentistry since 1993, and has held prior teaching appointments at Loyola University, Cook County Hospital, and with the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Flick maintained a private practice in Chicago through 2013. He is currently full-time clinical professor at UIC. After receiving his BS and DDS degrees from the U of I at

Chicago, and completing a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Cook County Hospital, Dr. Flick earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the UIC School of Public Health.

Dr. Michael Miloro Dr. Miloro received his DMD degree from Tufts University, and obtained his MD degree, General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery certificates from the University of Pennsylvania. He served on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty of Ohio State University, and was Program Director at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, and Section Chief and Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of

Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Miloro is a Faculty Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and serves as Section Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Miloro is currently the Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at U of I Chicago College of Dentistry.

Dr. Thomas Skiba Dr. Skiba earned his dental degree from the U of I at Chicago. Following service with the US Army in Vietnam, he returned and completed a residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at UIC and earned a MS degree in OMS. He enjoyed private practice in Crystal Lake, Illinois and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin following residency for 32 years. Dr. Skiba joined the faculty of

the UIC College of Dentistry in 2009. He taught both undergraduates and OMS residents. He was course director of Dental Medicine and Dental Hygiene Pharmacology. He was also the Director of the Undergraduate Oral Surgery Clinic. Dr. Skiba continues as a UIC faculty teaching appointment.

Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Administration

Dr. Evelina Kratunova Dr. Kratunova joined UIC in August 2015 and is a full-time faculty Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kratunova has a clinical doctorate in Pediatric Dentistry from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and a specialist fellowship degree in Pediatric Dentistry from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr. Kratunova has

also served as Secretary and President of the Irish Society for Dentistry for Children. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the ISDS.

Dr. William Goebel Dr. Goebel is a professor emeritus and former head of the section of Diagnostic Sciences at SIU School of Dental Medicine. He holds staff positions at two hospitals and conducts a private practice in addition to teaching in the areas of Diagnosis, Medicine, Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Anxiolysis. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed chapters

in several books and has been invited to lecture at meetings throughout the United States. He received his DDS and MSD degrees in Oral Diag-nosis and Oral Medicine from Indiana University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Kenneth G. Rawson Dr. Rawson graduated from SIU School of Dental Medicine in 2005 and received his certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 2007. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, maintains a private pediatric dental practice and is an Associate Professor in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry at Southern Illinois School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Art J. Misischia Dr. Misischia is Section Head and Clinical Associate Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, at SIU School of Dental Medicine. He also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor, St. Louis University, Department of Endodontics/Periodontics. Dr. Misischia is a diplomate of both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
