It’s great when a community plan comes together! The hard work and dedication of The Friends of the Millennium Trail Volunteer Committee and the County of Prince Edward, in combination with many private local sponsors, has led to some great results! Together, they’ve raised over $420,000 dollars—over the past two years—towards construction of a Millennium Trail in Prince Edward County. Of this amount, $120,000 dollars has come from our community members! When finished, this trail will provide a total of 48 km of resurfaced recreational trail ready for walking, running, cycling, or cross-country

In Ontario, 500 agricultural producers will receive Dairy Farm Investment Program (DFIP) funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). Over 2,500 applications were received in the first week of the program opening. With such a high volume of interest, we’re over the moon to learn that Bay of Quinte dairy farms are among the projects selected. These include: • D & D Richards Farms Inc. owned and

operated by the Richards family in Frankford, have received $9,250.00 for their acquisition of a new Feed Pusher.

• Scott Simpson, of Wellington, has received $36,963.37 towards the purchase of a new Calf Feeder, Feed Pusher, Cow Brushers and Mats, to ensure the wellbeing of the dairy herd.

Congratulations to our wonderful Challenger Baseball League and the Quinte Field Of Ability project on being named the winner of the Kraft Heinz Project Play! A total of $250,000 dollars will fully renew Parkdale Veterans Park into a fully-accessible baseball field which everyone in the Bay of Quinte can enjoy.

FIELD OF ABILITY

Affordable Housing Since 2016, a total of $5,120,819.00 dollars in Canadian Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) funding has been allocated for delivery to 33 affordable housing projects in the Bay of Quinte!

These projects range from new builds or unit retrofits for affordable residential, social-housing, and community or cooperative living projects in Belleville, Prince Edward County, and Quinte West.

These projects are just a small part of the bigger picture. In Ontario, a total of 30,561 projects will have received $641,040,000.00 dollars in combined federal and provincial funding through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) program stream—from 2011 to 2019. But how did all of this funding translate into real progress for Canadians? Well, since April 2011, a

total of 24,500 households, with seniors and persons with disabilities, were better able to continue living independently with assistance from the programs under the IAH; and another 2,997 households with victims of domestic violence were also assisted by IAH program funding.

Congratulations to all the hard-working organizations that submitted expressions of interest to IAH programs. The success of our community’s capacity to expand local housing options—which are affordable and safe—is made stronger for these efforts!

The County Seniors Centre, launched by the Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association provides a range of fitness or sports, learning, lifestyle, recreation, social and wellness programming for seniors. Learn more about the County Seniors Centre by calling: 613-476-7493.

Which issues are your top concern? Please rank in order of importance to you.

Supports for accessibility.

Supports for children and families.

Supports for seniors.

Supports for students.

Supports for veterans.

Other. Please specify: .

From 2016-2017, the Bay of Quinte has been home to a total of: • 222 Canadian Armed Forces

Reserve (part-time) members;

• 2,779 Canadian Armed Forces Regular (full-time) members; and

• 429 National Defence civilian

employees. In total, that’s 3,430 personnel associated with DND or CAF in our community. Since the riding is comprised of 51,943 households, this means that approximately 7% of Bay of Quinte residents have direct links to our active service community. There are also another 4,000 households where a veteran is present. These numbers show why it’s so important for the Bay of Quinte to stand with our veterans, our service or reservist community members on and beyond Remembrance Day—so many people in our region understand what it takes to be trained, equipped and prepared to contribute to operations either at home or abroad. Above: Shawn Donnan’s Military Fire Globe offers tribute to the 158 Canadian Armed Forces members, and 4 civilians, who fell in the Afghanistan War; it will be installed along the Highway of Heroes. Wow, Bay of Quinte, you’ve really reached out my office this year! The chart below shows some of the ways we’ve had chances to connect, discuss issues, and work together to build up the best ideas from within the Bay of Quinte.

By comparing 2017 to 2018 statistics, I’m proud to see a steady increase in your outreach and the plans you have for our region. Keep it up, Bay of Quinte!

Icicle Challenge Answer: Brrrr! This edition is framed by 78 + 56 + 56 = icicles!

The Prince Edward County Food Hub and the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) have signed a 5 year lease, enabling the Food Hub to begin operations within an underutilized wing of Sophiasburgh Central School. This will allow the rural school in which the Hub is co-located, to remain open indefinitely.
