Paper 1 Level 4 exemplar 2 comments

- In Question 1, the candidate described appropriately the use of tools and instruments to collect data. He/ she

identified the problems of site selection and time of data collection. However, he/ she should have further

explained how these problems possibly affected data reliability. He/ she discussed the appropriateness of the

conclusion stated in the question by referring properly to the mean values and the extreme data. Finally, he/ she

suggested an ambiguous field study topic ‘Sorting of Sediments’ in part (d) and described generally the collection

of data.

- In Question 2, the candidate named the two plates correctly. He/ she explained appropriately the occurrence of

the earthquake and the tsunami. However, he/ she should have explained the occurrence of the volcanic eruption

at the island as well. He/ she explained quite comprehensively the serious damage in city X with appropriate

reference to the information. Finally, he/ she described and explained only in general terms the adoption of the

warning system to reduce death toll.

- In Question 3, the candidate described and explained logically the climatic constraints encountered by farming in

area X. He/ she identified nomadic herding from the photograph and explained briefly how it could be carried

out under such climatic constraints. He/ she explained logically the problem of insufficient food due to

population growth and the low carrying capacity in the area. He/ she possessed adequate knowledge of precision

farming and discussed its limitations for increasing food supply with reference to the local environment.

- In Question 7, the candidate explained appropriately the factors affecting the location of the R & D centres of the

IT industry in the United States with Silicon Valley as an example. However, his/ her arguments regarding the

importance of the development of global transport and telecommunication to facilitate multi-point production

were either too general or irrelevant.

Paper 2 Level 4 exemplar 2 comments

- The candidate communicated his/ her knowledge and understanding in a coherent and logical manner using

appropriate geographical terminology.

- In Question 1, the candidate demonstrated a good understanding of igneous rocks. He/ she compared rocks P and

Q accurately from a detailed study of the photographs. He/ she explained clearly the formation of feature R but

did not mention the underlying cause. He/ she also failed to explain the type of mass wasting at the site of

feature R. He/ she identified correctly the physical weathering process shown in Photograph 1c and discussed

briefly the importance of rock structure in the weathering process with reference to the photograph. However,

he/ she wrongly identified water as an erosional agent in the process.

- In Question 5, the candidate explained well the influences of Hong Kong’s climatic conditions, especially rainfall,

on slope stability. He/ she explained how afforestation may help increase the stability of slopes with regard to

the function of tree roots in soil fixation. He/ she also mentioned some drawbacks of afforestation.
