Case History:

Case #: 1905440

Presenters: Iris Bolton; Amy Usborne

Corresponding Institution: Eli Lilly and Company

Signalment: (5) 18 week old female NSG™ mice from Jax

History: Mice were received from vendor 10 weeks previous to being put on report to Veterinary Resources for alopecia and rough hair coat. All mice examined and submitted were housed in the same MACS Gentle-Air Wall Mount Ventilated Caging system and offered Teklad global soy protein-free extruded irradiated chow (2920x) and DI water ad libitum. Animals were monitored over the next two weeks to assess hydration and track clinical progression. Euthanasia was elected due to the failure of the animals’ clinical improvement.

2019 MEETING OF THE MIDWEST ASSOCIATION OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGISTS PARKE COUNTY, INDIANA

Case History:

Case #: MSU VDL NC-19-121

Presenter: Dodd Sledge

Corresponding Institution: Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory

Signalment: 6-year-old castrated male Labrador retriever

History:

This animal had a 2-week history of weakness, inappetance, and a swollen right eye that were treated with Metronidazole, Tobramycin, and Carprofen. On presentation at Michigan State University, the dog was markedly ataxic, but ambulatory. Mentation was dull, and no proprioceptive defects were noted.

Ophthalmic examination revealed buphthalmos OD, hyphema OD, absent menace OD, decreased retropulsion OD, and retinal detachment OS.

Abdominal radiographs identified bilaterally enlarged kidneys and lytic lesions in the left proximal femur and lumbar vertebrae. Chemistry profile revealed marked uremia (urea nitrogen 170mg/dL [12-27mg/dL] and creatinine 5.8mg/dL [0.6-1.5mg/dL]), hypergammaglobulinemia (14.8g/dL [2.3-3.7g/dL]), and hypoalbuminemia (1.4g/dL [2.8-3.6g/dL]). Mild to moderate increases in total bilirubin glucose, ALT, ALP, and AST were also identified.

Gross findings:

On gross examination, the right eye was mildly buphthalmic and had thinning of the limbal and posterior sclera. The anterior and posterior compartments were filled with densely proteinaceous material. The retina was diffusely detached and surrounded by a large amount of free hemorrhage. The subretinal space contained similar, densely proteinaceous fluid and hemorrhage.

Case History:

Case #: Burcham-01

Presenter: Grant N. Burcham

Corresponding Institution: Heeke Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and Department of Comparative Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University

Signalment: White-tailed deer, buck

History: This adult male White-tailed deer was legally harvested by a hunter on November 24, 2018 within the Hoosier National Forest, at a property known as Paw paw marsh. The deer was markedly emaciated and the entire carcass was submitted for autopsy.

Gross findings:

The buck was markedly emaciated and dehydrated. The left carpus was surrounded by fibrous connective tissue and the joint space was filled with purulent exudate.

The liver was diffusely white to tan, with multiple firm areas, as well as numerous, variably-sized masses bulging from the capsular surface. The masses corresponded with abscesses which were throughout the parenchyma. Numerous black foci, including serpentine tracts, were throughout the hepatic parenchyma. Four large (5 cm in length), red to tan flukes, as well as numerous, small (5-10 mm) flukes were throughout the hepatic parenchyma. Thickened areas of fibrosis surrounded the flukes and formed channels throughout the liver. Hepatic parenchyma, where recognizable, was diffusely friable and tan.

Numerous acorns and partially digested forage were in the rumen; formed feces were in the colon.

The nasaopharynx contained fly larvae (bots).

A few thin, filarial-type nematodes were free within the thoracic cavity. The right caudal lung lobe contained a small (5 to 10 mm), clear cyst with a single, short, elongated white structure (suspected tapeworm larva) inside. The cyst appeared to be on the pleural surface near or adjacent to the diaphragm.

Gunshot related lesions: The proximal portion of the left humerus was fractured into multiple fragments with little to no surrounding hemorrhage. The 4th rib on both the left and right side of the thorax was fractured at the junction with the sternum. A 3.5 cm hole was in the skin at the fracture site on the left side. The left cranial lung lobe was red to purple. The pericardial sac and right ventricle were torn. The heart was surrounded by clotted blood.

Case History:

Case #: 17-H46849-12

Presenter: Andrea E. Pohly, DVM

Corresponding Institution: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Signalment: 13-year-old, spayed female, Old English Sheepdog

History: This animal presented to the ER for acute vomiting. Abdominal ultrasound showed multiple nodules within the spleen, a thickened stomach wall and a potential lymph node which was enlarged next to the stomach. Fine needle aspirate of the stomach wall was consistent with eosinophilic inflammation while the splenic nodule was consistent with lymphoid hyperplasia. Given this information, the primary differentials were an allergic gastritis or neoplasia; full-thickness gastrointestinal biopsies were recommended to further characterize the changes in the stomach. Biopsies were taken of the liver, splenic lymph node, and gastrointestinal tract. A splenectomy was also performed at this time.

Gross findings: On exploratory laparotomy, a small nodule on the left lateral liver lobe, an enlarged splenic lymph node, and mild thickening of the antrum of the stomach were identified.

2019 MEETING OF THE MIDWEST ASSOCIATION OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGISTS PARKE COUNTY, INDIANA

Case History: Case #: NC-19-575 Presenter: Leah Stein, Annie Zimmerman, Kurt Williams, Sarah Corner Corresponding Institution: Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Signalment: 13-year-old, castrated male Ocicat History:

This Ocicat was diagnosed with nasal lymphoma in January 2019 and was being treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In mid-April he developed severe respiratory distress and presented to Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center with severe dyspnea, open mouth breathing, and hypoxemia. CT scan was suggestive of pneumonia. A left cranial lung lobectomy was submitted to the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) and histopathologic findings were consistent with chronic constrictive airway disease, but nonspecific as to the underlying cause. Respiratory cultures were negative. The cat remained severely hypoxemic despite hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics, steroids, and oxygen supplementation. Due to his poor quality of life, euthanasia was elected and he was submitted to the VDL for post mortem examination.

Gross findings: The overall body condition score was 2/9, as there were low amounts of subcutaneous and visceral fat, and there was marked muscle atrophy of the hind limbs and hips. Nasal turbinates were multifocally dark red. The thoracic cavity contained approximately 25 ml of red-tinged, clear, watery fluid, and there were few thin, fibrinous adhesions between the costal pleura and ventral lungs. The remaining lung lobes were diffusely wet and contained patchy areas of collapse that were red to plum, regions that were tan and somewhat firm, and regions that were pink and somewhat spongy.

Signalment: 6 mo female intact NOG mouse

History:

This experimental cohort was housed in sterile caging on corncob bedding, and provided RO water and standard rodent chow. These mice received five injections of DAUDI cells suspended in PBS buffer. 21 days post-injection, multiple mice were found dead. Remaining mice were hunched, ruffled, squinting, pale, thin, and dehydrated; affected mice continued to die despite supportive care.

Gross findings: There were low amounts of subcutaneous and visceral fat, and the animal had a body condition score of 2/9. The animal was hunched, the fur was unkempt, and the fur over the scapulae was stained yellow. There were dozens of 1mm – 2mm in diameter tan, smooth, slightly raised nodules randomly scattered along the diaphragmatic surface of all liver lobes; on cut section, the nodules were homogenous and extended into the underlying parenchyma. There was a similar 2mm in diameter nodule at the cranioventral aspect of the body of the spleen. The renal capsular surfaces were largely obscured by dozens of similar 1mm – 2mm in diameter, multifocal to coalescing nodules that extended into the underlying parenchyma. The left ovary was 6mm x 5mm x 2mm and the right ovary was 8mm x 5mm x 3mm. No other significant lesions were observed.

Two other littermates had similar clinical signs and a third litter mate died acutely. All three kittens were being fostered at the time of presentation. Gross findings: Submitted for autopsy was a reportedly 10-week-old, 600g, yellow and white, male neutered domestic shorthair. The cat was in poor body condition with minimal subcutaneous and intraabdominal adipose tissue. There was a 1cm x 0.7cm defect in the skin overlying the medial aspect of the left hock. The wound was open down to the level of the bone, which was visible. This defect was associated with an open comminuted fracture of the left distal tibia. Bone fragments at the fracture site were rough and encased in thick, yellow, gelatinous, friable material. Yellow, cloudy, thick fluid extended from the fracture site proximally to the level of the stifle, dissecting between muscle and fascia. The left popliteal lymph node was markedly enlarged. An abscess was present over the right stifle measuring 1.5cm x 2.5cm x 1cm. Underlying this abscess there was a 2mm x 2mm dissecting defect of the proximal cranial tibia that extended 7mm into the proximal epiphysis. A thick cap of yellow, gelatinous, friable material was loosely adhered to the epiphyseal defect.

12 year old male castrated Pointer dog

History:

The dog was initially presented to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center (MU-VHC) oncology service on August 21, 2018 for evaluation of previously diagnosed chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In October 2017, the dog was incidentally found to have a peripheral lymphocytosis on routine in-house bloodwork before a dental at the rDVM (IDEXX ProCyte, 35.24 K/µL), and was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In-house bloodwork performed two weeks after the initial bloodwork in October 2017, and again in December 2017, showed consistently elevated lymphocytes (31.04 K/µL and 32.38 K/µL, respectively); no CBC morphology comments were noted in the history and it is unknown if a blood film was evaluated. Treatment with prednisone was started in October 2017 and the dog did well clinically, however the prednisone was discontinued a few weeks before the dog was presented to MU-VHC because the owner thought he was having difficulty breathing while on the prednisone. A CBC performed at MU-VHC on 8/21/18 revealed mild anemia (35%) and lymphocytosis (28.98 K/µL). The majority of lymphocytes were granular lymphocytes with ovoid to slightly reniform eccentrically located nuclei measuring approximately 1.25-2x the diameter of a RBC (Figure 1). Nuclei contained loosely clumped chromatin. These lymphocytes contained moderate amounts of pale blue cytoplasm and few coarse to fine pink cytoplasmic granules. The findings were most consistent with chronic lymphocytic leukemia of granular lymphocyte origin.

Figure 1. Granular lymphocytes present in the blood collected on 8/21/18 (100x objective).

The dog returned to MU-VHC oncology service on 9/25/18 for a recheck appointment. The dog had generally been doing well at home with a good appetite and energy level, however, several days before the appointment he had a few episodes of vomiting and seemed lethargic. Additionally, he had developed progressive lymphadenopathy and dorsal strabismus. When the vomiting and lethargy developed, he was brought to his rDVM, where a steroid injection was given (dose unknown). Bloodwork performed at the visit to MU-VHC on 9/25/18 was largely unchanged from the visit on 8/21/18, and revealed a low hematocrit of 32% and lymphocytosis of 29.58 K/µL. The dog was re-started on prednisone for palliative care.

On 10/9/18, the dog visited the rDVM where he was administered 6 mg (0.23 mg/kg) of dexamethasone and prescribed cerenia; improvement in the dog’s appetite was noted after this visit. The third and final follow up visit at MU-VHC occurred on 10/10/18. The dog’s lymph nodes were still markedly enlarged, and bloodwork was performed. A blood smear from this visit is included in your slide set.

Signalment: 8-year-old, neutered male, black and rust Doberman Pinscher

History:

In December of 2018, this dog had his left hind limb amputated due to the presence of osteosarcoma in this limb. He was part of a clinical trial in which he received EC-17 and a folate scan prior to the amputation of the limb. He also received one dose of carboplatin. At the time of amputation, there was no evidence of metastasis of the hind limb osteosarcoma.

In February 2019, this dog presented to the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Emergency Department for a recent history of two episodes of profound lethargy and hypothermia. Hemoabdomen was confirmed. He was euthanized and submitted to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for necropsy.

Gross findings:

The abdomen contains approximately 0.5 L of clotted and unclotted blood. The head of the spleen has a ruptured, approximately 10 X 11 X 4 cm, friable, dark red mass consisting of an outer capsule partially surrounding an accumulation of clotted blood. The omentum is partially adhered to the mass. An approximately 0.6 X 0.6 cm, firm, pale tan, raised mass is within the splenic parenchyma near the tail of the spleen.

An approximately 1.8 X 2.4 X 1.4 cm, firm, red, raised nodule is within the parenchyma of the left medial liver lobe. Multifocal, 0.1 X 0.1 cm to 0.4 X 0.4 cm, hard, pale tan nodules are within all lung lobes.

The left hind limb is absent due to a previous amputation (history reported osteosarcoma in the left hind limb and subsequent amputation of that limb).

Signalment: 4-year-old spayed female cat of unspecified breed

History: Two month history of uveitis. Began in right eye, with signs developing in left eye several weeks later. Previously managed with topical prednisolone, flurbiprofen, ofloxacin, dorzolamide and tacrolimus, but uveitis and secondary glaucoma have failed to respond. Presented for second opinion. Both eyes were buphthalmic. The right eye had severe corneal vascularization and a yellow opacity in the anterior chamber. The left eye had severe aqueous flare and posterior synechiae. Patient had normal bloodwork and was negative for both FeLV and FIV. Seropositive for both feline coronavirus and histoplasma. She had a very mild pulmonary interstitial pattern on thoracic radiographs, lymphadenopathy of medial iliac and mesenteric lymph nodes (but still too small to sample). Both eyes were enucleated and submitted to COPLOW.

Gross findings: Both eyes were buphthalmic with expanded and tan irises and ciliary bodies. The right eye had copious tan flocculent exudate in the anterior chamber with smaller amounts of exudate on the surface of the ciliary body and retina with a little bit of intraocular hemorrhage. The lens was also opaque (cataract) in the right eye. Slides of the right eye were submitted for MAVP.

Signalment: 3.5-year-old female spayed standard poodle

History: Five months prior to presentation, the patient presented to her primary veterinarian for evaluation of recent development of regurgitation. The patient was initially thought to have myasthenia gravis based upon initial radiographic findings; however, acetylcholine antibody receptor titers were within normal limits. A left-sided neck mass was then removed six weeks prior to presentation. Following this procedure, the patient developed progressively worsening left forelimb lameness. Two to three weeks prior to presentation a CT scan performed at another hospital revealed a mass on the left aspect of the neck that extended from the caudal mandible into the cranial mediastinum. Partial surgical resection was performed. Following recovery, the patient had increasing difficulty eating and swallowing. Physical exam results upon presentation to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center revealed significant muscle wasting (BCS 2/9), non-weight bearing lameness of the left forelimb, left-sided Horner’s syndrome, conscious proprioceptive deficit of the left forelimb with neurologic lesion localization to C6-T2 and brachial plexus, a decreased swallowing reflex, and numerous moderately to markedly enlarged lymph nodes ranging from the mandibular region caudally along the left side of the neck and into the cranial mediastinal space. No overt abnormalities were detected on CBC, serum chemistry, and evaluation of total T4 and TSH. A CT scan revealed a large cranial mediastinal mass consistent with previous reports. Fine needle aspirates of the cranial mediastinal mass and left prescapular lymph node were collected for cytologic analysis. Histology slides submitted are prepared from samples collected at the time of partial surgical resection of the mass. Representative images of cytologic findings are provided below.

History:

On initial examination, the referring veterinarian identified severe conjunctivitis OD, corneal edema OD, and green discharge OD that persisted despite 1 month of medical treatment for suspected feline herpesviral (FHV-1) infection. Examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist revealed periocular crusting, discharge, third eyelid elevation, severe corneal granulation tissue, and a central fibrin clot with pigment OD. The right eye was nonvisual with no dazzle, direct or indirect PLR. Normal dazzle and direct PLR were seen OS. OD was fluorescein positive and had an IOP of 13 mmHg. OS was fluorescein negative and had an IOP of 17 mmHg. Corneal cytology of the granulation tissue was performed and identified numerous epithelial cells, abundant neutrophils, and a single eosinophil.

Gross findings: On gross examination of the formalin-fixed globe, the cornea is diffusely opaque, tan, and thickened with an irregular surface. There is a sharply-demarcated, tan to dark brown, deep axial corneal depression. On cut section, the thickened cornea expands into and obliterates the anterior chamber. The iris and ciliary body stroma are moderately thickened by similar pale tan, irregular material.

Signalment: 1.5-year-old female spayed German shepherd dog

History: The patient was presented to the Michigan State Veterinary Medical Center (MSU-VMC) for evaluation of progressive paraparesis and inappropriate urination of three weeks duration. On physical examination, the dog was bright and alert with non-ambulatory paraparesis and absent pelvic limb proprioception. Pain was elicited upon bilateral hip extension and rectal examination. There were normal myotatic and perineal reflexes, and an inconsistent bilateral cutaneous trunci reflex. Focal spinal hyperesthesia was exhibited at the level of the lumbar-sacral junction and upon lifting the tail.

A complete blood count showed mild leukocytosis (16.4 𝗑𝗑 103 /µL; RI 4.6-10.7) characterized by a mild neutrophilia (12.2 𝗑𝗑 103 /µL; RI 2.6-7.5) and moderate monocytosis (2.0 𝗑𝗑 103 /µL; RI 0.2-0.5). Serum chemistry revealed mild hyperproteinemia (7.6 g/dL; RI 5.4-6.7) with mild hypoalbuminemia (2.5 g/dL; RI 2.8-3.6) and mild to moderate hyperglobulinemia (5.1 g/dL; RI 2.3-3.7), mild hyperphosphatemia (6.5 mg/dL; RI 2.7-5.4), mild hyperglycemia (120 mg/dL; RI 81-118) and mild elevations in AST (59 U/L; RI 16-41) and CK (177 U/L; RI 51-169) enzyme activities. Urine was yellow and mildly turbid with a specific gravity of 1.025 (refractometric), pH 6.1 (pH meter), 2+ out of 4+ protein, and moderate heme on urine test strip. Sediment examination showed 2-4 RBC/ hpf.

A magnetic resonance image (MRI) revealed multifocal lymphadenopathy (axillary, cranial mediastinal, sternal, tracheobronchial, splenic, sublumbar and peri-aortic), splenomegaly and discospondylitis (T1-T2, T10-T11) characterized by compressive empyema, neuritis and myelitis.

Gross findings: The cranial mediastinal and sublumbar lymph nodes were tan, markedly enlarged at 2-4 cm in diameter, had an irregular surface dissected by mild hemorrhage, and on cut surface had a diffusely granular texture. The spleen was mildly diffusely enlarged, congested, and contained several well-demarcated, smooth, dark red nodules up to 5 cm in diameter. On cut section, these regions contained gelatinous hemorrhage and few peripheral scattered 1-2 mm in diameter tan foci.

History:

The dog was transferred to the MSU Neurology Service for evaluation of progressive hind limb lameness. The lameness began suddenly and got progressively worse. Clinical signs did not improve with prednisolone and gabapentin. At the second visit (44 days later), the patient was showing signs of neurologic progression evidenced by mild conscious proprioceptive deficits. MRI revealed an aggressive L2 vertebral body mass that extended along the left lamina and pedicle and caused severe extradural compression of the spinal cord. At surgery, cytology of the mass was consistent with a plasma cell neoplasm, and splenic cytology was consistent with plasmacytosis. Pre- and post-chemistry panel and urinalysis did not reveal hyperglobulinemia or Bence-Jones proteinuria. Post-operation CT revealed an additional lytic lesion located at the dorsal lamina of L4.

Gross findings: Not applicable.

Signalment: 11-year-old, intact male Shilo Shepherd

History:

This dog presented with a one-month history of right-sided epistaxis, frequent face rubbing, and decreased airflow through the nasal cavity. Physical exam revealed a soft tissue swelling on the right lateral aspect of the muzzle, and airflow was decreased through the left naris and absent through the right naris. Computed tomography (CT) identified a destructive nasal lesion that occupied the entire right nasal cavity and most of the left nasal cavity. Histopathology was consistent with a ganglioneuroma. The mass was unresponsive to treatment with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) based on subsequent CT scans performed 1, 3, and 6 months post-treatment.

Gross findings: On gross examination, the nasal cavities contained a 15 cm x 5.5 cm x 5 cm, expansile, pink, and fleshy-to-gelatinous mass that expanded from the rostral nasal passage, caused lateral deviation of the distal nasal septum, and effaced the distal nasal septum and turbinates. The mass focally eroded and erupted through the right maxillary bone. On cut section, the mass contained scant hemorrhage that surrounded multifocal to coalescing regions of central necrosis. Brown, opaque, viscous fluid filled the frontal sinuses.

Case History: Case #: NC-19-0000711 Presenter: Anna Gates, Leah Stein, Jennifer Thomas, Bonnie Harrington Corresponding Institution: Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Signalment: 3-year-old, spayed female, domestic short hair cat History: This cat presented to the Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center for anorexia, lethargy, and weight loss. She had a chronic history of allergic dermatitis that was being treated with desensitizing injections and cyclosporine until 2 days prior to presentation. A painful abdominal mass was identified by palpation, and ultrasound showed the mass was consistent with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Aspiration of the nodes revealed numerous macrophages, moderate neutrophils, and large numbers of phagocytized non-staining rod bacteria. A nodular interstitial lung pattern was observed on thoracic radiographs. Despite treatment with antibiotics, the cat developed a fever, marked right forelimb swelling, and was euthanized due to quality of life concerns. She was submitted to the VDL for postmortem examination. Gross findings: A 2.75kg, spayed female cat was necropsied. Autolysis was mild, and there were low to moderate amounts of subcutaneous and visceral fat with an overall body condition score of 4/9. The eyes were moderately sunken into the orbits and mucous membranes and subcutaneous fascia were tacky (dehydration). The subcutis of the right carpus and foot were markedly expanded by clear gelatinous to watery fluid (edema) in the region of the intravenous catheter. The jejunum, ileum, and orad cecum were moderately transmurally thickened by a tan, homogenous infiltrate. The mediastinal, tracheobronchial, and mesenteric lymph nodes were moderately to severely enlarged, ranging in diameter from 5 mm to 4 cm. They were soft, pale tan, and homogenous on cut section. The liver was diffusely mottled red to tan and had an enhanced reticular pattern. The lungs were diffusely rubbery, wet, and mottled dark red to pink (edema and congestion).

Signalment: 3-year-old, male, neutered Collie dog

History: This dog was adopted about 1 year ago. At that time, he had small red dots around his prepuce. The spots grew slowly into raised red lesions. He also started developing sores on other parts of his body. Recently, the sores had been getting much worse. Skin scrape negative. Skin cytology yielded too numerous to count red blood cells, polymorphonuclear cells, and cocci bacteria. Treated for 1 week using Cephalexin and Douxo Chlorhexidine microemulsion. The skin continued to worsen, so biopsy was elected. Five, 4mm skin punches were taken from the axillary (2) and inguinal (3) regions.

Case #: 18-1196-4

Presenter: Allison Mustonen

Corresponding Institution: The Ohio State University

Signalment: 4 year old neutered male domestic shorthaired cat

History: The patient presented to The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine for a two-month history of severe weight loss, lethargy, anemia, and bilaterally hyperechoic kidneys with loss of corticomedullary distinction as reported by the referring veterinarian. Relevant initial laboratory results included severe non-regenerative normocytic hypochromic anemia, increased BUN, minimally concentrated urine, proteinuria, and an increased urine protein:creatinine ratio. Cytologic evaluation of a bone marrow aspirate revealed a markedly hypocellular marrow with abundant mucinous material. The cat died despite repeated blood transfusions and supportive care.

Gross findings: At autopsy, the skin and mucous membranes were diffusely pale. There was a large amount of coagulated blood in the stomach and the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract. Both kidneys were pale tan and bulged on cross section.

Signalment: 11 year-old, neutered male papillon

History: The dog was presented to the emergency and critical care department at the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (PUVTH) for a one week history of vomiting, diarrhea, melena, hyporexia, and lethargy. The slide is of a blood film one day after initial presentation.

Relevant clinical and clinicopathologic findings: An abdominal ultrasound was performed and revealed bilateral dilation of the renal pelvises, multiple renal cortical cysts, mild perirenal effusion, mild to moderate peritoneal effusion. Additionally, mild prostatomegaly, hepatic nodules, and gallbladder sludge were noted. Evaluation of the peritoneal fluid revealed a transudative effusion (TP: 2.5 g/dL, TNCC: <30,000 cells/μL) Uroperitoneum was ruled out by comparing fluid to serum creatinine and potassium (see below).

Signalment: 6-year-old, male castrated, Labrador Retriever

History:

This dog’s owner originally noticed a possible intraocular mass OD in mid-February 2019. Examination by the primary veterinarian on 3/26/2019 revealed a mass suspected to be in the anterior chamber OD. The patient was started on one drop of Neo-Poly-Dex q12h OD. The owners did not appreciate any improvement and suspected that the mass was growing. This dog’s vision was not impaired, and the mass did not appear to be causing any discomfort. This dog was otherwise normal. An ophthalmic exam was performed by the referring veterinarian on 4/11/2019 and a mass arising medially from the ciliary body causing dyscoria was identified, in addition to OD 1+/4 conjunctival hyperemia, adhesions from the iris to the mass, a fine cellular deposition at the anterior lens capsule, trace flare with cells, and nuclear sclerosis. OS showed nuclear sclerosis but was otherwise normal. Enucleation was performed on 6/7/2019 and the globe, eyelid, and third eyelid were submitted for histopathologic examination. Gross findings:

On gross examination of the formalin-fixed globe, there was a tan and black mass arising from the region of the iris and ciliary body and expanding into the anterior chamber. The lens nucleus was white and opaque.

Case History:

Case #: 19N-0191

Presenter: Erika Hoffeld, DVM

Signalment: 12-year-old female spayed mixed breed dog

History: Multiple hepatic masses and a solitary splenic mass were diagnosed via ultrasound. Cytology of an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate was suspicious for sarcoma. The owner elected supportive care only. Four months later, the dog presented again for inappetance, lethargy, and marked weight loss of several weeks’ duration. Euthanasia was elected.

Gross findings: At necropsy, the dog was emaciated (body condition score 1/5). There were 200 mL of serosanguinous peritoneal fluid. The liver was markedly enlarged, comprising 16.9% of the body weight. Throughout all lobes, 85% of the liver parenchyma was replaced by firm, white-tan, multifocal to coalescing, raised, umbilicated nodules, which did not bulge on cut section. These umbilicated regions varied in color from tan to dark red. Throughout the omentum were dozens of discrete, white, firm nodules ranging in diameter from 0.1 cm to 0.4 cm. The head of the spleen was markedly, focally expanded by a light-tan, firm mass measuring 8 x 7 x 6 cm, with multifocal areas of dark red hemorrhage on the surface and on cut section. The adrenal glands were mildly enlarged. The cranial and caudal poles of the right adrenal gland each contained a light tan, firm nodule, measuring 0.4 cm and 0.3 cm in diameter, respectively, which did not bulge on cut section. The capsule of the left and right kidneys each contained over a dozen multifocal firm white masses which sank in formalin, ranging in size from 0.2 to 0.5 cm in diameter. Subtending each capsular mass was a tan indentation on the renal cortical surface, with the tan discoloration extending up to 0.2 cm into the cortex.

Signalment: 8-year-old male alpaca

History: The animal was found in lateral recumbence with a temperature of 104.7°F. The animal had a 3-month history of weight loss and poor health.

Gross findings: Approximately 2-3 L of amber colored fluid containing fibrin strands was present in the abdominal cavity. Attached to the right side of the larynx were multiple semi-firm pale tan to white masses ranging in size from 2 cm x 2 cm x 1 cm to 6 cm x 6 cm x 7 cm. On cut section, the laryngeal masses had central dark red foci. The liver weighed 3.7 kg with variably sized multifocal to coalescing pale tan to white raised soft nodules that extended into the hepatic parenchyma and effaced approximately 75% of the liver.
