Luke McCarthyCHIEF JUDGE

Luke McCarthy is a freelance journalist, author and semi-retired bartender. He wrote a longstanding spirits and cocktail column for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, and his writing on drinks and travel has appeared in numerous Australian and international publications. After many years working as a bartender and educator at Melbourne’s award-winning Whisky & Alement, Luke is now an active spirits judge, presenter and drinks journalist. His book The Australian Spirits Guide, the first on the history and resurgence of the Australian spirits industry, was published in 2016 by Hardie Grant Books.

Cameron SymePANEL CHAIR

Lawyer and Master Distiller Cameron Syme set up Great Southern Distilling Company in 2004 with one goal in mind – to make the best spirits in the world.Today, Cameron has established and owns three distilleries, two under the Great Southern Distilling Co banner (Limeburners Whisky and Tiger Snake Whiskey) and one distillery operates under Margaret River Distilling Co (Giniversity Gin).

Cameron’s distilleries have collected a multitude of awards and accolades over the years, acknowledging them as world-class spirits; with Great Southern Distilling Co most recently having been named 2019 UK Whisky Magazine’s Icons of World Whisky Australian Distillery of the Year.

Cameron has an extensive knowledge of the opportunities for Australian barley, being one of the few key ingredients in his award-winning whisky.

As an entrepreneur, Cameron is extending that knowledge to establish his own grain malting plant in Porongurup, the home of his Tiger Snake distillery.

James YoungPANEL CHAIR

James has followed a far from traditional path into distilling.

After studying psychology at UWA, he has worked in graphic design, advertising, sports administration and even coached the Lithuanian National hockey team before taking up the challenge to distill world-class spirits.

Since launching Old Young’s Distillery in the Swan Valley in 2016, James has seen the business go from strength to strength including winning Australian Champion Distiller for 2017 and again in 2018. He has gathered a swag of national and international awards including 13 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze medals for his gins and vodkas. He has previously judged at the European Gin of the Year Awards.

Phillip Jones PANEL CHAIR

Phillip Jones is an advocate and writer about craft spirits. Through his website, the Martini Whisperer, and frequent educational events, he provides independent insights into their making and the people who are inspired to create them. He’s an Associate Member of the Australian Distillers Association and has been a guest judge for the inaugural New Zealand Craft Spirits Awards in 2019.

Phillip is also a National Judge for the QANTAS Tourism Excellence Awards and guest judge for the Australian Hotels Association Awards in the ACT and NSW. With a background is restaurant management and business consulting he also provides consulting services to the tourism and distilling industry.
