PEARL (Program for Emerging and Aspiring Religious Leaders)

The dynamic landscape of Catholic education requires the ongoing identification and formation of quality

future leaders who are capable of dealing with a diversity of challenges. There is a need to ensure that our

schools are not only centres of excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, but also vibrant faith

communities.

In Catholic Schools at a Crossroads, the Bishops of NSW/ACT committed that our schools should be:

• truly Catholic in their identity and nature;

• centres of the ‘New Evangelisation’; and

• led and staffed by people who will contribute to these two goals.

In light of these goals and the overall vision and mission of our system, priority is given to religious

leadership.

PEARL(PHRIS Activity Code: 2000-4509-3)

Three-day NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) registered Professional Development (PD)

PEARL is a three-day program comprised of three NESA registered days, including:

• PEARL Gathering day

• PEARL Leadership Conference

However, teachers may register in the non-NESA Registered Course ‘Liturgy, Prayer, Sacraments’, which could be used as teacher identified Professional Development (PD), and obtain an additional 5.5 hours of Religious Education Currency.

This is the first NESA registered day in the Program for Emerging and Aspiring Religious Leaders (PEARL), and is aimed at teachers identified as having the potential to serve in a significant leadership role (e.g. Religious Education coordinator).

The focus of the day is the ‘call’ to leadership, research on leadership in a Catholic school setting, and the importance of a Professional Learning Plan.

Drawing on research and utilising a method of problem solving used by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, participants will engage in a ‘consultancy session’ with other participants, to refine their plan and collectively engage with the research, system documents and the ‘Australian Professional Standards for Teachers’. By the end of the day, participants will be aware of the mentoring nature of the program and the indicators of effective Catholic leadership.

Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in collegial discussions with a highly experienced school and system leader such as a Religious Education Coordinator, Assistant Principal or Principal, Leaders of Learning, Education Officers, or directors. Participants will finish the day with a refined Professional Learning Plan that will assist them in building their own leadership capacity, allowing them to map a journey towards senior school leadership.

Prior to the PEARL Gathering Day, participants will be required to complete readings and a survey that will be provided to participants after registration. A laptop or mobile device, such as a tablet or iPad, is essential for the day.

Participants will:• participate constructively in formal and informal

professional discussions with colleagues, with an emphasis on goal setting and developing a Professional Learning Plan. This will draw on system documents and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers’, to develop leadership skills and practices

• interact, network and engage with colleagues from other schools and from the system, in a consultancy session that provides feedback to each participant regarding their development of a Professional Learning Plan

• contextualise contemporary research on leadership to school and system priorities.

Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Proficient) (NESA Registered):

• 6.1.2 Use the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and advice from colleagues to identify and plan professional learning needs.

• 6.3.2 Contribute to collegial discussions and apply constructive feedback from colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice.

PLEASE NOTE: Participation in the PEARL Gathering Day, the PEARL Leadership Conference and one other PEARL Day is required (See Table Above) to complete the program. Teachers who complete the Program, will receive Level C accreditation (Accreditation School Leadership (Middle Leaders)), under the ‘Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead in Systemic Catholic Schools, Archdiocese of Sydney’ policy. Teachers who complete the three NESA Registered Days, will receive 12 hours of NESA Registered PD, however all three NESA Registered days must be completed. All PEARL Days contribute hours to maintaining currency at Category D or E under the ‘Work, Teach, Lead’ framework.

STAGE 6: STUDIES IN CATHOLIC THOUGHT - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

The design of the day will be influenced by the work of Stewart Hase, from Southern Cross University Australia,

Moving from andragogy to heutagogy: implications for VET (2001), which recognises that there needs to be

flexibility in the learning that the teacher provides.

Teachers will be challenged to go beyond the simple acquisition of skills and knowledge as a learning

experience for themselves and their students and focus on self-determined or learner centred learning.

A common thread of these professional development days will be the recommendations provided by the

Congregation for Catholic Education in the document Educating Today and Tomorrow: A Renewing Passion

Instrumentum Laboris, 2014. This document highlights that learning through research and problem solving is

essential for students to develop significant cognitive and mental abilities. Therefore, participants will explore

the key Scripture, philosophical works, relevant texts, historical periods and people, and the fine arts, that

will the used to deliver the course content. They will then engage in collegial discussion and collaboration

regarding the design of appropriate research and problem solving experiences for the Stage 6 classroom.

LEADING LITURGY IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

The Leading Liturgy course consists of two Phases; Phase 1 includes four modules, and Phase 2 includes two modules.

All modules (in each phase) must be completed to achieve registered hours. In completing single modules, staff members will be able to log hours as Teacher Identified Professional learning.

Phase 1: Phase 2:Module 1: What is Liturgy? Applying the Principles

The first module in Phase 1 will challenge some current misunderstandings about what is classified as Liturgy in our schools, and provide the participant with clear direction on developing correct liturgical practices. Participants will leave the day knowing how to apply the liturgical principles which guide good Liturgy, and there will be various opportunities to engage in discussions particular to primary and secondary school contexts. This includes sharing solutions to the challenges that RECs face in preparing liturgical and prayer celebrations within the contexts of their school. There will be a strong focus on practically applying the learnings of the day to real examples, and it will be an opportunity to provide a solid foundation for subsequent modules.

Module 2: Foundations for the Celebration of Mass

Module 2 will explore, in detail, the parts of the Mass in ways that perhaps have not been previously considered. Through participation in ritual analysis, participants will be able to use his/her newly gained understanding with students and staff members in their school.

Module 3: Using the Official Liturgical Books

Using the official liturgical books are essential in the preparation of good Liturgy with our students. This module will give participants an opportunity to prepare official liturgies for use in the school, while engaging with books such as the Ordo, General Instruction of the Roman Missal and Lectionary for Masses with Children, among others. Participants will leave the day having a familiar understanding of how to use these books (in hard copy and electronically) to prepare Liturgies in a school.

Module 4: Preparing Prayer and Eucharistic Adoration

In response to the overwhelming request by existing and new RECs, this module will explore ways of preparing prayer experiences for students and staff members, and include several workshops, including preparing Eucharistic Adoration/Benediction.

Module 1: Proclaiming the Word and Singing the Psalms

This full day workshop will be practical in nature according to the school context (primary or secondary). It will combine the necessary liturgical foundations of the Liturgy of the Word and provide the essential techniques of teaching children and adults to proclaim the Scripture, and sing and lead the Responsorial Psalm.

Module 2: Liturgical Music in the Catholic School Context

This day is especially suited to Music teachers and RECs. This whole day workshop will give participants a solid understanding of the inherent connection that music has to the Mass. The day will incorporate excellent examples of music repertoire in the school context of either primary or secondary, and with the principles of what is required when choosing music for the Mass, compared to other prayer celebrations. For the primary school session, the issue of limited musical resources/personnel and what can be done, will also be discussed.
