APPLICATION GUIDELINES The following document outlines the guidelines and criteria required to apply for the Risk Manager of the Year Award (RMOY).

As the largest most respected professional association for risk management practice in the region the Risk Management Institute of Australasia (RMIA) is strategically committed to excellence in the manage-ment of risk. Thus, the Awards presented at the annual conference each year are part of RMIA’s strategy of identifying and recognising those RMIA members who are demonstrating and driving excellence in risk management.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIAThe RMOY is for the individual who is delivering excellence in the management of risk for their organisa-tion and who has also contributed to the development and advancement of the risk profession more broadly. The applicant must demonstrate that their work has been at an enterprise level. The RMOY will be awarded to the practitioner judged to have excelled in the management of risk against the following criteria:

1. Business outcome focus2. Strategic and systems thinking3. Communicating and influencing4. Stakeholder focus5. Application of professional risk management knowledge6. Ethical practice7. Risk Culture being incorporated into the organisation8. Contribution to the risk profession

WHY NOMINATEWe encourage all our members to either self-nominate or nominate fellow members of the RMIA as a way of recognising excellence in the management of risk.

We want all our members to feel included and that they can succeed in their industry and that is why we award our talented members with prizes for excellence in three key areas of Risk Management plus an additional award for volunteer services to RMIA.

JUDGING PANELThe judging panel of the awards committee comprises the following:

• An RMIA Board member• The current and a previous winner of the RMOY award,• A representative of the RMOY sponsor,• RMIA GM

THE SUCCESSFUL RMIA CANDIDATE RECEIVES:

The winner of the RMOY Award receives the honour of serving on the awards judging committee for two consecutive years without re-election. They also receive the following:

• 10 CPD Points• Complimentary registration, return airfare and accommodation for the next Annual Conference• A presentation tour dedicated to the RMOY.

HOW TO COMPLETE AND SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATION

I. CHECK YOUR OR YOUR CHOSEN NOMINEE’S ELIGIBILITYII. READ THE CONDITIONS OF ENTRYIII. COMPLETE THE AWARD NOMINATION FORM IV. COLLATE A FOLIO OF EVIDENCE THAT ADDRESSES THE AWARD CRITERIAV. SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATION TO THE RMIA CORPORATE OFFICE

SELECTION PROCESS

I. Applications from nominees are submitted to the RMIA Corporate office via email: [email protected],

II. The supporting manager/supervisor must be available for a phone call from the CorporateOffice as part of their declaration in the application process. However, they may not be contacted at the discretion of the RMIA Corporate Office

III. RMIA Corporate Office creates a shortlist of the Top 3 applications which is then passed onto the Awards committee,

IV. The Awards Committee conducts a face to face interview ( in person or via skype ) with each of the short-listed candidates and selects the winner, based on the criteria below.

CRITERION 1 – BUSINESS OUTCOME FOCUSRisk Management practitioners require a comprehensive knowledge of their organisation in order to create systems and structures that improve business performance. The nominee must demonstrate.

- A broad knowledge and understanding of the whole business- Tangible evidence of the value that risk management function adds to the organisation - A substantial and measurable risk management contribution towards significant strategic

goals

CRITERION 2 – STRATEGIC AND SYSTEMS THINKING

The capacity for strategic and systems thinking is essential for risk practitioners to ensure the effective-ness of the function. The nominee must demonstrate that their advice, recommended actions, or policyimplementation:

- Considers the impact on other functions and ability to meet goals- Evaluates the full consequences of a recommendation - Facilitates organisational learning through effective feedback- Develops a culture of improvement in risk management application - Demonstrates improvement in practice through culture and learning

CRITERION 3 – COMMUNICATING AND INFLUENCING

Risk management decision making requires the capacity to bring informed judgements through under-standing the broader business environment. The nominee must demonstrate that they have:

- Contributed to effective change through influence and communication - Effectively established priorities for the organisation- An understanding of the operating environment and ensure its inclusion in the

decision-making framework- Communication skills that drive corporate culture and motivate employee’s to innovate

and change - The capacity to leverage risk management initiatives with senior executives.

CRITERION 4 – STAKEHOLDER FOCUS

Risk management professionals need to have all stakeholders’ high priorities in the forefront of their mind for sustainable long-term risk management practices. The nominee must demonstrate:

- Effective consultation with employees, management and the executive group - Detailed knowledge of the executive agenda- Credibility among and the authority of the executive to act - Sustainable long-term solutions to risk identified by stakeholders.

CRITERION 5 – APPLICATION OF PROFESSIONAL RISK MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE

A professional must demonstrate the capacity to apply risk management knowledge to address organisa-tional opportunities and challenges. The nominee must demonstrate:

- Systematic application of the international risk management standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2018 for the organisation

- Practical application of the concepts of enterprise risk management including frameworksand systems for the organisation

- Integrative management of the specialist areas of risk management to improve outcomes.

CRITERION 6 – ETHICAL PRACTICE

Risk management practitioners are expected to exercise leadership and demonstrate, communicate and promote the highest ethical standards. The nominee must demonstrate commitment to:

- The RMIA Code of Ethics- Providing impartial advice that is beyond any undue influence- Providing leadership in policy development of organisational values and ethics- Active promotion of sound ethical practice as intrinsic to organisational culture

CRITERION 7 – RISK CULTURE

The risk culture of an organisation is critical to the success of the Risk function. The winner must demon-strate

- That they have contributed to the implementation of Risk Culture in their organisation - Examples of how the Risk Culture has contributed to the success of the organisation.

CRITERION 8 – CONTRIBUTION TO THE RISK PROFESSION

- How they currently encourage the growth and development of the profession- Briefly mention their views on how the profile of the profession can be further enhanced

and recognized.

AWARD SUBMISSIONS

WHO CAN NOMINATE?

Nominations must be made by a person familiar with the nominee’s work and ability or be self-nominated.

- Nominee’s must have supporting documentation and declaration from a manager/supervisor.

SUBMISSION EVIDENCE

- An executive summary (Max 600 words)- Evidence the nominee is a current RMIA member- A summary of the nominee’s achievements against each criterion (Max 500 words for each

criterion)- Attachments of two pieces of evidence of their work that demonstrate their achievement

for each criterion (Note lack of evidence will result in less of a chance of proceeding to the shortlist)

- Completed original nomination form- Submission to be submitted to the RMIA Corporate Office CEO (Scott Ryrie)

IMPORTANT DETAILS

A nominee’s submission must include the following details:

- Contact details title and principal accountabilities of the nominee- The written consent of the nominee - Contact details of the nominee’s employer- Contact details of the nominee’s supervisor/manager- Contact details of the nominee’s proponent - Organisation chart- Declaration of support from supervisor/manager- Applicants must be available to participate in finalist interviews

between the ___________(Date)- Confirmation the successful nominee will carry out the commitments of the RMOY

FORMATThe submission must be compatible with PC and MAC computers provided via email to [email protected]

INFORMATION

CONFIDENTIALITY

All nominations will be reviewed in strict confidence by an independent panel of judges

NO APPEALS

The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into by RMIA regarding the award.

COMMITMENTS OF RMOY

All nominees must agree in writing to meet the following commitments as the winner of the RMIA RiskManager of the Year:

1. To be present at the award ceremony. The award ceremony will take place at the Annual Conference on October 31 – November 2 – Gold Coast, Queensland.2. Provide presentations at RMIA functions detailing the work specific to attaining the award. Thecost will be approved by the RMIA Board3. Provide a submission to the RMIA Yearbook between 500 – 2000 words by 1 February, 2019.4. Provide a summary of the period as RMOY for official communication 5. Be available for judging the 2019 Awards as a part of the judging panel.

The capacity for strategic and systems thinking is essential for risk practitioners to ensure the effective-ness of the function. The nominee must demonstrate that their advice, recommended actions, or policyimplementation:

- Considers the impact on other functions and ability to meet goals- Evaluates the full consequences of a recommendation - Facilitates organisational learning through effective feedback- Develops a culture of improvement in risk management application - Demonstrates improvement in practice through culture and learning

decision-making framework- Communication skills that drive corporate culture and motivate employee’s to innovate

and change - The capacity to leverage risk management initiatives with senior executives.

CRITERION 4 – STAKEHOLDER FOCUS

Risk management professionals need to have all stakeholders’ high priorities in the forefront of their mind for sustainable long-term risk management practices. The nominee must demonstrate:

- Effective consultation with employees, management and the executive group - Detailed knowledge of the executive agenda- Credibility among and the authority of the executive to act - Sustainable long-term solutions to risk identified by stakeholders.

CRITERION 5 – APPLICATION OF PROFESSIONAL RISK MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE

A professional must demonstrate the capacity to apply risk management knowledge to address organisa-tional opportunities and challenges. The nominee must demonstrate:

- Systematic application of the international risk management standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2018 for the organisation

- Practical application of the concepts of enterprise risk management including frameworksand systems for the organisation

- Integrative management of the specialist areas of risk management to improve outcomes.

CRITERION 6 – ETHICAL PRACTICE

Risk management practitioners are expected to exercise leadership and demonstrate, communicate and promote the highest ethical standards. The nominee must demonstrate commitment to:

- The RMIA Code of Ethics- Providing impartial advice that is beyond any undue influence- Providing leadership in policy development of organisational values and ethics- Active promotion of sound ethical practice as intrinsic to organisational culture

CRITERION 7 – RISK CULTURE

The risk culture of an organisation is critical to the success of the Risk function. The winner must demon-strate

- That they have contributed to the implementation of Risk Culture in their organisation- Examples of how the Risk Culture has contributed to the success of the organisation.

CRITERION 8 – CONTRIBUTION TO THE RISK PROFESSION

- How they currently encourage the growth and development of the profession- Briefly mention their views on how the profile of the profession can be further enhanced

and recognized.

CRITERION 6 – ETHICAL PRACTICE

Risk management practitioners are expected to exercise leadership and demonstrate, communicate and promote the highest ethical standards. The nominee must demonstrate commitment to:

- The RMIA Code of Ethics- Providing impartial advice that is beyond any undue influence- Providing leadership in policy development of organisational values and ethics- Active promotion of sound ethical practice as intrinsic to organisational culture

CRITERION 7 – RISK CULTURE

The risk culture of an organisation is critical to the success of the Risk function. The winner must demon-strate

- That they have contributed to the implementation of Risk Culture in their organisation - Examples of how the Risk Culture has contributed to the success of the organisation.

CRITERION 8 – CONTRIBUTION TO THE RISK PROFESSION

- How they currently encourage the growth and development of the profession- Briefly mention their views on how the profile of the profession can be further enhanced

and recognized.

AWARD SUBMISSIONS

WHO CAN NOMINATE?

Nominations must be made by a person familiar with the nominee’s work and ability or be self-nominated.

- Nominee’s must have supporting documentation and declaration from a manager/supervisor.

SUBMISSION EVIDENCE

- An executive summary (Max 600 words)- Evidence the nominee is a current RMIA member- A summary of the nominee’s achievements against each criterion (Max 500 words for each

criterion)- Attachments of two pieces of evidence of their work that demonstrate their achievement

for each criterion (Note lack of evidence will result in less of a chance of proceeding to the shortlist)

- Completed original nomination form- Submission to be submitted to the RMIA Corporate Office CEO (Scott Ryrie)

A nominee’s submission must include the following details:

- Contact details title and principal accountabilities of the nominee- The written consent of the nominee - Contact details of the nominee’s employer- Contact details of the nominee’s supervisor/manager- Contact details of the nominee’s proponent - Organisation chart- Declaration of support from supervisor/manager- Applicants must be available to participate in finalist interviews

CONFIDENTIALITY

All nominations will be reviewed in strict confidence by an independent panel of judges

NO APPEALS

The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into by RMIA regarding the award.

COMMITMENTS OF RMOY

All nominees must agree in writing to meet the following commitments as the winner of the RMIA RiskManager of the Year:

1. To be present at the award ceremony. The award ceremony will take place at the Annual Conference on October 31 – November 2 – Gold Coast, Queensland.2. Provide presentations at RMIA functions detailing the work specific to attaining the award. Thecost will be approved by the RMIA Board3. Provide a submission to the RMIA Yearbook between 500 – 2000 words by 1 February, 2019.4. Provide a summary of the period as RMOY for official communication 5. Be available for judging the 2019 Awards as a part of the judging panel.
