Message from our President…
As the club moved into April it was a breath of fresh air as the warm weather finally re-turned to the beach. We had our first dance on April 12th which was our free hamburger and hotdog night. Yours truly along with SOBS Vice-President, Mark Trull did all the cooking. Cooking meant grilling 80 hamburgers and 40 hotdogs. There was plenty of food to go around so doubleheaders were available if you liked. Our April 26th dance was our annual Southport/Oak Island Animal Rescue (S.O.A.R.) benefit night for our furry friends. Katy O’Neill and Tom Milner along with the help of 20+ club members gathered to put the finishing touches for our entry in the SOS Spring Safari parade next Saturday, May 4th. Joe Malinowski has been coordinating our tailgating party before the start of the parade. As is customary for the SOBS, we will have our first “free pour” of the season at the OD Pavilion after the parade. We’re looking forward to winning our third in a row 1st place trophy for our entry in the parade. This year marks the 25th year anniversary of the SOS Spring Safari and coincidently, the 25th anniversary of the SOBS shag club. If you’ve never been to SOS Spring Safari, experienced our tailgate party, marched in the parade, or never come to our “free pour”, please come this year because it’s a great time and a whole bunch of fun. See you on the dance floor!

History of Mothers’ Day … from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day
The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis
held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West
Virginia. St. Andrew's Methodist Church now holds the International Mother's Day
Shrine. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United
States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had
been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American
Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna
Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set
aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who
has done more for you than anyone in the world".
In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holi-
day, joking that they would also have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day". However,
owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday, with
some of them officially recognizing Mother's Day as a local holiday (the first being
West Virginia, Jarvis' home state, in 1910). In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a procla-
mation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.
Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the
early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies had started selling Mother's Day cards. Jarvis believed that the companies
had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother's Day, and that the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit.
As a result, she organized boycotts of Mother's Day, and threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies involved. Jarvis
argued that people should appreciate and honor their mothers through handwritten letters expressing their love and gratitude,
instead of buying gifts and pre-made cards. Jarvis protested at a candy makers' convention in Philadelphia in 1923, and at a
meeting of American War Mothers in 1925. By this time, carnations had become associated with Mother's Day, and the selling
of carnations by the American War Mothers to raise money angered Jarvis, who was arrested for disturbing the peace.
In 1912 Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrase "Second Sunday in May, Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis, Founder", and created the
Mother's Day International Association. She specifically noted that "Mother's" should "be a singular possessive, for each family
to honor its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world." This is also the spelling used by
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in his 1914 presidential proclamation, by the U.S. Congress in relevant bills, and by various U.S.
presidents in their proclamations concerning Mother's Day.
While the United States holiday was adopted by some other countries, existing celebrations, held on different dates, honoring
motherhood have become described as "Mother's Day", such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom or, in Greece, the
Eastern Orthodox celebration of the presentation of Jesus Christ to the temple (2 February of Julian Calendar). Both the secular
and religious Mother Day are present in Greece. Mothering Sunday is often referred to as "Mother's Day" even though it is an
unrelated celebration.
In some countries, the date adopted is one significant to the majority religion, such as Virgin Mary Day in Catholic countries.
Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia's Mother's Day is a fixed date, remembering of
a battle in which women participated to defend their children. Some ex-socialist countries, such as Russia, celebrated Interna-
tional Women's Day instead of Mother's Day or simply celebrate both holidays, which is the custom in Ukraine. Kyrgyzstan has
recently introduced Mother's Day, but "year on year International Women's Day is certainly increasing in status".

Plan to be a part of the fun on May 4th at the 25th Annual SOS “Spring Safari” Tailgate Party, Parade and “Free Pour” at Ocean Drive (North Myrtle Beach). It’s right around the corner! As we reach for our third in a row “1st Place Shagging Troop” honor, our entry in the Shagging Troop category this year is a mining theme...
“We’ve struck SILVER- A gala 25 years of SOBS & SOS Parades!”
All shagging troop members should be dressed as miners, so now’s the time to put to-gether your denim “Miner’s Outfit”. Club members will carry miner’s tools, push wheel-barrows filled with “silver” or carry signs. Silver beads will be handed out along the ½ mile parade route. We will provide miner’s hats to the first 60 participants.
A big “Thank you” to the folks who came out for the 2 workdays at the VFW. Volunteers from the workdays are guaranteed a hat to wear in the parade!
Tuesday, April 23rd volunteers included: Bill& Karen Critcher, Chuck &Sandy Boney, Ken & Judy Koehly, Dean& Beth Jones, Susan & Roger Albizu, Mary Anne & Kevin Swenie, Mary & Mark Thuer, Bob & Jeanette Foster, Diani Johnson, Janice Ely, Anne Loomis, Robert Mohr, Elaine Faver, Lynne Doctor, Carol Goldenbaum, Marilyn Hill, Jeanette Manoogian, Bruce Eide
We finished up our pickaxes, shovels and hats. We still have a couple of tons of ‘Silver Nuggets” to finish on site at the tailgate party prior to the parade. The “Gala Silver Mine” signs (thank you Ben Hinson) are ready to hang on the side of the “Mine” (rear of Tom Milner’s truck) and we’re all ready to shag our way as a troop down Main St. So, meet the mining troop at the BI-LO parking lot and wear your denim outfit-shirt/jacket with pants/shorts/capris. Be sure to include comfy walking shoes. Our goal? First Place!
Co-Chairs: Katy O’Neill (910) 619-8265 and Tom Milner (910) 523-6385
NOTE: The Ocean Drive Beach Music Festival is also being held on May 4th in the parking lot of the OD Pavilion ar-ea. Starting at 10 AM, there will be bands and large crowds in addition to the SOS parade crowd. There will be very limited parking near the ocean. Please plan accordingly where you may want to park. We are having lots of great opportunities to dance this year. SOS is going to be great with the clubs, the bands, and the DJs. Our SOS tail-gate party and parade will be fantastic and the post-parade “Free Pour” with dancing at the OD Pavilion will make for a great Saturday afternoon… it doesn’t get any better than this! Continuing the good times; spinning the discs for our dances this month will be:
DJ Jimmy Buffkin, Friday, May 10th, OKI VFW DJ Gene Sistare, Friday, May 24th, OKI Moose Lodge
DJ Jimmy Buffkin will be at our May 10th dance at the Oak Island VFW. Jimmy Buffkin was born and raised in the Carolinas. Jimmy now lives in North Myrtle Beach, SC and is a staff DJ at Fat Harold’s Beach Club at Ocean Drive, North Myrtle Beach. His career spans the last 15+ years and he has been a member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s for the past 10 years. He loves to take requests and says if he has it, he will play it. Jimmy is on Beach Music radio station 94.9 at 5 PM on Tuesday and Friday. Let’s all look forward to Friday, May 10th at the VFW.
DJ Gene Sistare will be playing our Friday, May 24th dance at the Oak Island Moose Lodge. Gene has played for us before and keeps the dance floor full. He is from Lancaster, South Carolina and has been involved with the Lancaster Shag Club since 1993. He began DJ work in 1997. Gene was recently inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame. Gene is also one of the DJ’s who donates to our Operation Uplink event. Put this on your calen-dar and get out your dancing shoes. We are getting ready for our upcoming SOS “Spring Safari” Parade entry for Saturday, May 4th. We are hoping to have our best turnout ever. With our club winning 1st Place for the last 2 years, we are the club to beat in our cate-gory. Come early at 10:00 AM for “tailgate time”. The parade organizers say that our club has the best tailgating spread of food & drink choices of all the clubs. Please remember our traditional “Free Pour” at the Ocean Drive Pavilion after the parade. It sounds like a fun day to me! If you have any questions about joining in and becoming a part of our club parade entry or the “Free Pour,” please feel free to contact me or Katy. We will look forward to seeing you all. We hope to see you on the dance floor soon!
