    MissionandApproachofISP

    OurMission

    ThemissionoftheIgnatianSpiritualityProjectistoofferlife-changingspiritualretreatstomenandwomenexperiencinghomelessnessandinrecoveryfromaddiction.BasedintheSpiritualExercisesofSt.Ignatiusandthe12Steprecoveryprogram,ISPretreatshelptolayafoundationofhopeandhealingtosupportlong-termpersonaltransformation.

    BriefHistory

    TheISPstorybeginsin1998whenBillCreed,SJwasinvitedbyhisJesuitProvincialtomaketheSpiritualExercisesavailabletothemateriallypoor.WithhisgoodfriendEdShurna,Billdevelopedaretreatformatthatdrewuponthe500year-oldtraditionofIgnatianspiritualityexpressedinthecontemporarylanguageof12Steprecovery.In2005,BillwasinvitedtoapplyforafoundinggrantthatallowedtheemergingorganizationtobecomeanationwideNetwork.Subsequently,ISPincorporatedasa501(c)3andin2008hireditsfirstfull-timestaff.Today,theISPprogramincludesovernightretreats,follow-updaysofreflection,andongoingaccompanimentprogramsthatcarefortheinteriorandspirituallivesofthosetransitioningoutofhomelessnessandaddiction.Overtheyears,theISPNetworkhasgrowntremendously,withhundredsofISPprogramsnowbeingofferedannuallyin30citiesacrossNorthAmerica.

    GoalsandPhilosophy

    AtthecoreoftheIgnatianSpiritualityProjectmissionisacommitmenttonurturingspiritualityasanimportantsourceofrecoveryfromthecycleofhomelessnessandaddiction.Whiletherearemanyorganizationsthatprovidenecessarymaterialresources(housing,employment,drugtreatment,etc.),theISPprogramwasfoundedonthebeliefthatrealtransitionfromchronicaddictionandhomelessnessispredicatedonanindividualhavingtheinnerresourcestomakemorepositivelifechoices.Webelievethatchiefamongtheseinnerresourcesistheopportunitytodevelopanauthentic,livedspirituality.Thegreatmajorityofourprogramparticipantshavehadtheirlivessabotagedbyaddiction.Aspiritualitythatfocusesonawarenessof,andfreedomfrom,compulsionsandobsessionscanhelpallofusdrawcloserto,anddevelopalife-givingrelationshipwith,GodorourHigherPower.ISPprogramsarefoundedintheIgnatian(Jesuit)spiritualtradition.Ignatianspirituality,whilesharingmuchincommonwithotherChristianspiritualities,isnoteworthyfortwoprimarycharacteristics:1)itisincarnationalratherthantranscendent(Godispresentamongus,notdistantfromhumankind)and2)itfocusesonreflectionuponourconcrete,livedexperiences(wegrowinourfaithbyreflectingonGod’spresenceinoureverydaylives).

    ISP’sprimaryprogram,theovernightretreat,isdesignedasanintroductoryexperience.Over90percentofparticipantshaveneverbeforemadeaspiritualretreat.ItthereforehasagentlerhythmthatinvitesandchallengestheretreatparticipanttobringhisorherselftoaGodwhoisreceptiveandencouraging.Thisisaprofoundlynewexperienceformany.Itistraditionallysmall,involvingjustahandfuloffacilitatorsandaboutadozenparticipantstohelpencouragehonestandreflectivesharing.Theformathasbeendesignedtoallowparticipantstoclaim,orreclaim,God’spresenceintheirlivesandthusexperiencethehopeandstrengththatallowsthemtocontinueintheirjourneyoftransformation.

    OurFour-FoldApproach

    1. OfferingretreatsandspiritualcompanionshipinspiredbyIgnatianSpiritualitytothosewhoarehomelessandseekingrecovery.

    2. Buildinganetworkofvolunteerteamstorespondtothespiritualneedsofthosewhoarehomeless.

    3. Includingonourteamsmenandwomenwhohavethemselvesexperiencedhomelessness.

    4. Collaboratingwithindividualsandagenciesworkingtoendtheinjusticeofhomelessness.

    ConnectiontotheSocietyofJesus(Jesuits)ISP maintains a strong, intentional, and grateful connection to the Society of Jesus. ISPvolunteers, thegreatmajorityofwhomare laywomenandmen,work incollaborationwithJesuitsacrossthecountry.The34thGeneralCongregationoftheSocietyofJesusaffirmed:

    Jesuitsareboth‘menforothers’andmenwithothers.Thisessentialcharacteristicofourwayofproceedingcallsforanattitudeandreadinesstocooperate,tolistenandtolearnfromothers…TheSocietyofJesusacknowledgesasagraceofourdayandahopeforthefuturethatlaity‘takeanactive,conscientious,andresponsiblepartinthemissionoftheChurchinthisgreatmomentofhistory.’Weseektorespondtothisgracebyofferingourselvesintheservicetothefullrealizationofthismissionofthelaity,andcommitourselvestothatendbycooperationwiththemintheirmission.

    ISPisrecognizedasanapostolicworkoftheMidwestJesuitProvince,whichmeansthattheProvinceplaysacriticalroleinsponsoringourministryandofferingkeyinstitutionaloversight.WhiletheSocietyofJesusmaintainsgeneraloversightoftheISPministry,weareaseparatelyincorporated501c(3),federallyrecognized,charitableprogram.

    TherearetwoprimarywaysISPpartnerstoofferourministry:

    • CityAffiliate(CA):AteamofcommittedvolunteerswhichcollaborateswithlocalhomelessserviceprovidersandretreatcenterstoofferISPretreatprogramsintheircity.WiththehelpoftheNetworkdevelopmentoffice,volunteerteamsareresponsibleforfundraisingtosupportandsustaintheirlocalISPprograms.CityAffiliatesoperateunderISP’s501c(3)designation.VolunteersinCityAffiliatesarecoveredunderISP’sinsuranceliabilityplanwhilevolunteeringonbehalfofISPprograms.

    • InstitutionalAffiliate(IA):Thispartnershipmodelwasintroducedin2017whichallowsforanindependent501c(3)organizationtoofferISPretreatprogramsaspartoftheirministry.InstitutionalAffiliatesareresponsibleforcoveringthedirectcostsoftheirISPprogramsandforprovidingtheirownfundraisingandfinancialsupport.InstitutionalAffiliatesalsopaytheISPNetworkanannualfeetocovertraining,formation,andlicensecostsandagreetoprovideinsuranceandliabilitycoverageforvolunteersengagedintheirsponsoredISPprograms.

    Whiletheirorganizationalandfinancialmodelsaredifferent,CityandInstitutionalAffiliatesareidenticalprogrammaticallyintermsoftypesofISPprogramsoffered.Furthermore,theISPNetworkofficeprovidesbothAffiliatemodelsthesamehighlevelofformationandprogramsupport,andthevolunteertrainingandformationexpectationsremainthesame.

    ProgramsDescriptionWhoWeServe

    IgnatianSpiritualityProjectprogramsaredesignedformenandwomenwhohaveexperiencedhomelessnessandareinrecoveryfromsubstanceabuse.Thoughwerecognizethatourministrymodel,basedinIgnatianspiritualityand12Stepprinciples,mightbeeffectivewithavarietyofpopulationsonthemargins,ISPhaschosentofocusourworkspecificallyattheintersectionofhomelessnessandaddiction.‘Homelessness’ISPservesmenandwomenwhoareintheprocessoftransitioningfromhomelessnessandarecurrentlylivinginshelteredhousing.Thisincludesthoseresidinginsubstancerecoveryhomes,transitionalhousingprograms,30/60/90-daytreatmentfacilities,shortandlong-termaffordablehousing,group-basedandindependentsupportivehousing,“halfwayhouses,”prisonreentryprograms,andemergencyshelters.Becauseoftheneedforaminimumlevelofhousingstabilityandasafeplacetoreturnuponcompletionoftheretreat,ISPdoesnotworkwithindividualswhoareunsheltered,i.e.“livingonthestreet.”ISPteamsrelyonrelationshipswithcasemanagers/socialworkersatpartneragenciestoreferappropriatecandidatesforourprograms.StaffmemberswhoknowtheISPprogramaswellastheprospectivecandidateareinagoodpositiontodiscernanindividual’smaturityandreadinessforanovernightretreat.Forthisreason,nurturingstrongrelationshipswithstaffatlocalpartneragenciesiscrucialtobuildinganeffectiveISPministry.‘Recovery’TobeeligibletoattendanISPovernightretreat,prospectiveparticipantsshouldbeinrecoveryfromalcoholordruguseANDinmostinstancesatleast3monthssober,i.e.abstinentfromalcoholandillegalsubstances.ThoughISPrecognizesthatrecoveryandaddictiontakemanyforms,theISPprogramisspecificallydesignedforindividualswithalcoholand/orsubstanceuseaddiction,andisnotappropriateforthosestrugglingwithothercompulsionsoraddictions.ISP,whilebasedinthe12Stepapproach,recognizesthat“recovery”maytakeavarietyofforms.Thougha12Stepbackgroundiscertainlyhelpful,individualsneednotbeactivelyworkinga12Step(AA/NA)programtoengageinISPprograms.Thatsaid,prospectivecandidatesshouldbeinformedofour12StepapproachandopentoengagingtheseprincipleswhileparticipatinginISPprograms.Forthesakeofcreatingacultureofsafetyandspiritualityonourretreatsaswellasforliabilityreasons,individualswhoarestillactivelyusingalcoholordrugsmaynotattendan

    overnightretreat.Theseindividualsarewelcometoparticipateinon-siteISPongoingaccompanimentprograms,ifoffered.Individualswhoaretakingmedicationassistedtreatment(“MAT”),i.e.methodone,suboxone,etc.prescribedaspartoftheirrecoveryprogram,mayattendanovernightretreatiftheyarerecommendedbytheircasemanagerandmeetcertainguidelines.(Formoredetailedinformationonthisandotherbestpractices,see‘Alcohol&SubstanceUsePolicy’underOrganizationalPolicies.)AnyquestionsaboutWhoWeServeshouldbeaddressedtoyourlocalTeamCoordinator,orISPRegionalCoordinatorliaisonforyourISPaffiliate.ISPProgramsISPRetreat Ourprimaryandfoundationalprogram,

    • OvernightRetreat: ThisisourstandardISPretreatformat.Theovernightretreattypicallybeginsmid-morningonDay1andendswithlunchonDay2.Afulldescriptionofthisretreatcanbefoundin“FormatforanISPOvernightRetreat.”

    • 2NightRetreat: Adaptedversionofourovernightretreat.Includes

    allmovementsoftheovernightretreatplusextrareflectionexercisesandactivities.Retreattypicallybeginsinmid-morningofDay1andendswithlunchonDay3.Onlyasmallminorityofaffiliatescurrentlyofferthisretreat.TheNetworkofficecanshare2NightRetreatbestpracticesuponrequest.

    • 1DayRetreat: Adaptedversionoftheovernightretreat.Includes

    DayofReflection(“FollowUp”): Followupexperiencethatregathersovernightretreatparticipants,typically3-4weeksfollowingretreat.AllowsparticipantstoreflectonwhathashappenedsincetheretreatandhowGodhasbeenpresenttothem.DescriptionofFollowUpandbestpracticescanbefoundin“ISPFollowUpFormat.”

    OngoingAccompaniment(OA): Ongoingprogramengagementwithretreatalumni

    followingovernightretreatexperience.OAcantaketheformofregularfaithsharinggroup,Ignatianprayer,biblestudy,etc.WhiletheNetworkofficecanprovideideasandbestpractices,thereisnostandardizedOAformatatthistime.

    TeamStructure

    History

    Fromourbeginnings,ourfoundersandearlycollaboratorsagreedthattheISPNetworkshouldbeflexible.Ratherthanfollowingthe“franchise”modelofsomecorporations(e.g.,McDonalds),whichtendstohaverigorousandspecificguidelinesforoperations,theISPNetworkwasenvisionedtobeflexibleenoughtoallowcreativitytoflourishwithinastructureandguidelinesthatallowedISPprogramstomaintaintheirintegrity.FollowingthisreasoningandtheCatholicSocialTeachingprincipleofsubsidiarity,thefoundersendowedlocalISPteamswithmuchoftheresponsibilityformanagingthemselves.Teams,animatedbytheleadershipoftheirlocalcoordinator,wouldmanageandoverseethegreatmajorityoftheplanningandimplementationoftheirlocalISPprograms.Today,theISPNetworkofficeexiststosupportandencouragelocalISPteamsintheirministryefforts:toprovidemission-focusedformation,trainingandresourcematerials,toshareguidanceandbestpractices,andtoaidandrespondwhenaneedemergesorasprogramintegritydemands.BelowaresomeprimaryISPvolunteerroles(anddefinitionofterms)tohelpyoudiscernhowyoumightwishserveasanISPteammember.     LeadershipRolesTheLocalCoordinatorandStewardareteammemberswithaspecialroleofleadingtheirlocalISPaffiliate.TheISPNetworkworkscloselywiththeCoordinatorandStewardastheydeveloptheirlocalISPministryandempowertheirministryteams.

    • LocalCoordinator:LeadteammemberresponsibleforoverseeinglocalISPretreatprograms,shelterpartnerships,andretreatcenterrelationships.Thelocalcoordinatoralsooverseesvolunteerrecruitment,teamdevelopmentandformation(Pleasenote:theCoordinatorisexpectedtodelegatesignificantresponsibilitytoteammembers).CoordinatorservesastheNetworkoffice’spointofcontactand,withtheSteward,createstheannualprogramplanandbudget.(SeeCoordinatorResourceGuideformoreinformation.)

    AlcoholandSubstanceUsePolicy

    TeamMembersPursuanttotheDrug-FreeWorkplaceActof1988,andinspecialconsiderationofthepopulationwhichISPaccompanies,alcoholandsubstanceusewillnotbetoleratedduringanISPretreatoraffiliatedprogram.Teammembersareprohibitedfromusing,distributing,dispensing,orpossessingalcohol,marijuanaorintoxicatingsubstancesduringISPprograms.ParticipantsUseofalcoholorotherintoxicatingsubstancesarestrictlyprohibitedonISPovernightretreats.Anyparticipantfoundtobeusingordistributingalcohol,marijuanaornon-prescriptioncontrolledsubstanceswillbeaskedtoleavetheretreatimmediately.Thoughrare,itisimportanttobeawareandpreparedforasituation.(SeeEmergencyProtocolsforappropriateprotocol.)MedicalorrecreationalmarijuanaisprohibitedduringallISPprogramsduetoitspotential‘triggering’effectonotherparticipants.Historically,ISPhaspartneredprimarilywithsober-livingfacilitieswhichprohibitclientsfromengaginginanyalcoholordruguseasaconditionoftheirresidence.Manysober-livingprogramsaresteepedin12Steprecoveryprinciples,whichdovetailwellwiththeISPapproach.Inrecentyears,however,astransitionalhousingandrecoveryprogramsacrossthecountryhaveadopteda‘HousingFirst’approach,ISPteamsmayfindthemselvesencounteringindividualswhoarestillusingsubstances,oraresober/abstinentbutinaprogramorlivingenvironmentthatdoesnotprohibitsubstanceuse.Inthesesituations,thefollowingguidelinesapply:

    • Ingeneral,individualsshouldbe3+monthssoberfromalcoholandillegalsubstancestoattendanISPovernightretreat.Forthesakeofcreatingacultureofsafetyandspiritualityonourretreatsaswellasforliabilityreasons,ISPcannotallowanyoneactivelyusingalcohol,marijuanaorotherintoxicatingsubstancestoattendanovernightretreat.

    • Individualsundergoing“medicationassistedtreatment”(MAT)aspartoftheirrecoveryprogram(methodone,suboxone,etc.)arewelcometoattendanovernightretreatif:

    o Theindividualtakesresponsibilityforself-administeringhisorherprescription.ISPteammembersmaynottakeresponsibilityforholdingordispensinganymedicationonretreat.

    • Individualsnoteligibletoattendanovernightretreatmaybeinvitedtoattendon-siteISPongoingaccompaniment(OA)programs.Thisdecisionremainsatthediscretionofteammembersandshouldbemadeinconjunctionwithhisorherlocalteamcoordinator.Teammembersmaynottransporttheseindividualsoff-siteatanytimeduetoliabilityconcerns.

    • Individualsengagedin“harmreduction”-basedtreatmentprogramsthatdonotstrictlyprohibituseofalcohol/substancesmayparticipateinon-siteOAprogramssolongastheOAgroupisinformedinadvanceandtheirpresencedoesnottriggerothermembers.Thisdecisionremainsatthediscretionofteammembersandshouldbemadeinconjunctionwithhisorherlocalteamcoordinator.Teammembersmaynottransporttheseindividualsoff-siteatanytimeduetoliabilityconcerns.

    • Asvoluntaryadults,allprospectiveretreatcandidatesmustbeabletotakeresponsibilityfortheirownphysicalandmentalhealthwhileparticipatinginanISPretreat.ISPteammembersmaynottakelegalresponsibilityforaparticipant’shealth,behaviororoverallwell-beingasaconditionofengagementinourprogram.Anyindividualwhoneedsawaivertoreleasehimorherintoanother’scarebycourtormedicalordermaynotparticipateinanISPovernightretreat.

    ConfidentialityISPteammembersareexpectedtomaintaintheconfidentialityandprivacyofallprogramparticipantsandotherteammembersby1)protectingtheidentityoftheparticipantand2)keepingconfidentialalloralandwrittenmattersarisingduringtheretreatprogram.Thisconfidentialitypolicydoesnotapplywhenteammembersbecomeawareofongoingorimpendingphysicalharmtooneselforothers,childabuseorelderabuse.Inthesecases,ISPteammembersareobligedtoreportprogramparticipantsand/orvolunteersengagedinsuchactivitiesandmayprovidetestimonytotheproperauthorities.(SeeSafety&SafeEnvironment.)Onanorganizationallevel,ISPteammembersarerequiredtorespecttheconfidentialityofanyinformationtowhichtheymayhaveaccessbyvirtueoftheirpositionasanISPvolunteer.TeammembersmaynotdiscloseanyconfidentialinformationtoanyonenotauthorizedtoreceivesuchinformationortouseanysuchinformationwithouttheexpressconsentofISP.Confidentialinformationincludes,butisnotlimitedto,internalcommunications,informationaboutandcommunicationswithISPemployeesandvolunteers,itsbusinessplans,contributorlists,mailinglists,marketingmaterials,orinformationaboutpartieshavingbusinessdealingswithISP.Safety&SafeEnvironment

    ISPteammembersarestronglyencouragedtocontacttheirRegionalCoordinatororDirectorofProgramsifeverunclearaboutwhetherwhatthey’veheardorexperiencedconstitutesanabuseorreportableoffense.

    ConflictResolutionISPteammembersareencouragedtoworkrespectfullywithfellowcolleaguesandtogivesuggestions,improveprocesses,promoteethicalconductandreportunsafe,unacceptableorillegalpracticeswithoutfearofretaliation.Aswithanyhumancommunity,disagreementsandconflictscanpotentiallyariseduringparticipationonyourISPteam.Volunteersareencouragedtoresolvedisagreementsinformallywheneverpossible.Exceptinthecaseoffraud,grossnegligence,orothercriminalactivity,teammembersareencouragedtofirstbringanyissuestohisorherlocalcoordinator.Ifnoresolutionisforthcoming,youmaycontactyourdesignatedRegionalCoordinator.

    Anti-HarassmentPolicyISPstrivestopromoteaproductiveandsafeworkandvolunteerenvironmentanddoesnottolerateunlawfulharassment,includingverbalorphysicalconduct,whichharasses,disrupts,orcreatesanintimidating,offensive,orhostileenvironment,especiallyifsuchconductconcernsgender,sex,race,color,maritalstatus,religion,ancestry,age,disability,nationalorigin,sexualorientation,orveteranstatus.

    Sexualharassmentisspecificallydefinedasunwelcomesexualadvances,requestsforsexualfavors,andotherverbalorphysicalconductofasexualnatureandcantakemanyforms,includingverbal,nonverbal,physical,visualortextual/electronic.

    AnyISPteammemberwhobelieveshimselforherselftobetheobjectofsexualharassmentorwhoobservesanotherpersonbeingsubjectedtosexualharassment,isencouragedtobringtheincidenttotheattentionthelocalISPteamcoordinatorordirectlytoThomasDrexler,ISPExecutiveDirector.AnyISPteammemberwhoisfoundtohaveviolatedtheprohibitiononsexualharassment,orknowinglymakesafalsereportregardingsexualharassment,willhavetheirvolunteerstatusterminatedimmediately.

    SocialMediaUse

    ISPrealizesthatmanyofitsvolunteersmayparticipateinsocialmediaasawaytosharetheirlifeexperiencesandthoughtswithfamily,friends,andcolleagues.[SocialmediaincludesallmeansofcommunicatingorpostinginformationorcontentontheInternet,includingtoa

    volunteer’sownorsomeoneelse’s‘blog,’journalordiary,personalwebsite,socialnetworkingoraffinitywebsite,webbulletinboardorchatroom,whetherornotassociatedoraffiliatedwithISP,aswellasanyotherformofelectroniccommunication.]ISPrequiresitsvolunteerstouseallformsofsocialmediainaresponsiblemanner.Avolunteermaynever:

    • postphotosorotherpersonalinformationaboutISPparticipantsonsocialmediawithouttheexpressconsentoftheISPNetworkoffice.

    • usesocialmediatopostcomplaintsorcriticismsaboutISPprograms,staff,participantsorfellowteammembers.Examplesofsuchconductmightincludepostsmeanttointentionallyharmsomeone’sreputationormadeonthebasisofrace,sex,nationalorigin,sexualorientation,disability,religion,oranyotherstatusprotectedbylaworISPpolicy.

    IfISPisasubjectofateammember’ssocialmediacontent,thatteammembermustbeclearaboutthefactthats/heisavolunteerandthathis/herviewsdonotrepresentthoseofISP.Asuseofsocialmediainvolvescertainrisks,ISPrequiresallvolunteerteammemberstoexercisecertainresponsibilities.Thus,anyvolunteer’ssocialmediaconductthatadverselyaffectshisorherserviceasanISPvolunteer,theworkofothervolunteersorstaff,oranyindividualswhoworkonbehalfoforinconnectionwithISP,suchashousingprogramsandfacilities,suppliers,vendors,etc.,mayresultindisciplinaryactionuptoandincludingterminationasavolunteer.

    FinancialPoliciesParticipationwithinISPisconsidered,unlessuniquelyspecifiedatthewrittendiscretionoftheExecutiveDirector,tobeentirelyandsolelyvoluntary.BycompletingtheapplicationandacknowledgingthereceiptofthisHandbook,teammembersagreethatcompensationorremunerationforworkinsupportofISPoranyaffiliatedprogramsisnotexpected.Contributions(e.g.,“dues”)arenotrequiredbyISPtoparticipateinanyprograms.CityAffiliates

    TeammembersareexpectedtobegoodstewardsofISPresourcesasourfinancesarisefromthegenerosityofISPbenefactors.Teammembers,likeparticipants,shallnotbenefitfinanciallyorcommerciallyastheresultoftheteammember’sstatuswithISP.Teammembersshallnotlendmoneyorgivegifts(monetaryorotherwise)toparticipants.FiscaloversightandmaintenanceofISPfiscalagencyisgenerallyconsideredthetaskoftheISPNetworkOffice.Solicitationoffundsandfinancialreportingshouldonlybedonein

    ReimbursementPolicy(forCityAffiliatesonly)ISPwillmakeeveryreasonableefforttocoveroutofpocketexpensesincurredbyteammembersonanovernightretreatoraffiliatedprogram(e.g.travel,food,etc.).Withtheapprovalofthelocalcoordinator,andasallowedforintheCityAffiliate’sannualISPbudget,costspaiddirectlybyateammembermaybereimbursedbytheISPNetworkOffice.TeammembersareexpectedtosubmitexpensestotheirRegionalCoordinatorinatimelymannerwithappropriatereceiptsattached.Expensessubmittedmorethansixweeks(45days)aftertheexpensewasincurred,orwithoutappropriatedocumentation,cannotbereimbursed.Ifnecessaryandappropriatelyrequested,ISPwillreimbursefortransportationexpensesincurredinsupportofaretreatoraffiliatedprogram.ISPwillreimburseatthecurrentIRSrateformilesdriveninsupportofacharitableprogram(atpublication,rateis14centspermile).Teammembersmaymake“in-kind”donations,themonetaryvalueofwhichwillbeappliedtotheCityAffiliate’sbudget.Whenmaking“in-kind”donations,teammembersmustprovideappropriatereceipts/documentationwithinsixweeksofthedonationinordertoreceivealetterfortaxpurposesandforcredittobeappliedtotheirlocalaffiliate.

    InstitutionalAffiliatesTeammembersvolunteeringwithinISPInstitutionalAffiliatesarenoteligibletoreceivereimbursementfromISPforanyexpensesincurredduringISPretreatsoraffiliatedprograms.SuchreimbursementsfallunderthepurviewoftheISPsponsororganizationandtheirfinancialpolicieswithrespecttovolunteers.PleaseaskyourlocalcoordinatororInstitutionalAffiliateDirectorformoreinformation.

    DismissalandVoluntaryWithdrawal

    Dismissal

    ISPreservestherighttodismissanyonefromtheprogramatanytime,atthediscretionoftheExecutiveDirector.DismissalfromISPincludesremovalfrom,andimmediatecessationof,anyISPprogramsoraffiliatedprograms,andprohibitsfutureinvolvementwithanyISPprogramsoraffiliatedprograms.

    AvolunteermaybedismissedfromparticipationinISPprogramsforoneormoreofthefollowingreasons,whichincludesbutisnotlimitedto:

    • Conductingoneselfinamannerdeemedasmorallyorethicallyoffensive.• DisregardingtheguidingphilosophyandmissionofISPoranyprograms/agencies

    withwhichISPisaffiliated.• Demonstratingapatternoffailuretoconductoneselfinawaycommensuratewith

    ISP’sguidingphilosophy,mission,andgenerallyagreeduponbestpractices.• Havinganyseriousphysicaloremotionalproblemswhichinhibitonefrombeing

    abletoreasonablyengagewiththemissionofISP.• DecisionbytheExecutiveDirectorthatthevolunteerisnotupholdingorobserving

    thepoliciesandstandardsofISPasoutlinedinthisHandbook.

    VoluntaryWithdrawalIfanISPteammemberisconsideringleavingISPduetoconcernsabouthisorherteamortheprogram,sheorheisencouragedtodiscusstheirconcernswiththeirlocalcoordinatorfirsttoseeifasolutionoraccommodationmightbepossible.Regardlessofreasonsforwithdrawal,participationwithISPisconsideredentirelyvoluntary;ISPinnowaycompelsavolunteertoremainconnectedwiththeteamandISPwillrespectthefinaldecisionofthevolunteer.

    EmergencyProtocols

    Situationsrequiringemergencyinterventionhaveoccurredinextremelyrarecircumstances.WhileISPdoesnotanticipateanyofthesituationsdescribedbelow,teammembersareencouragedtoprepareforandunderstandhowtorespondinanypotentialcrisisthatmayemergeduringparticipationinanISPRetreatoraffiliatedprogram.

    MedicalIntheeventanacutemedicalemergencyoccursonanISPretreatoraffiliatedprograminvolvingaparticipantorteammemberotherresponsibleteammembersshould:

    1. Assessthesituationanddeterminethemostappropriatecourseofaction.2. Call911tosummonanambulanceifnecessary.Ifthepersonisnon-responsive,itwill

    beimportanttoinformtheEMTs/medicalauthoritiesofanyprescriptions,medicalconditionsorallergieslistedontheindividual’s“EmergencyContactForm.”

    3. Remaincalm;assistauthoritiesasmuchaspossiblebyfollowingtheirdirectives;anddocumentasmuchofthesituationaspossible.

    4. InformISPDirectorofProgramsassoonaspossible.5. Whenappropriate,theISPDirectorofProgramsoryourlocalcoordinatorwillinform

    thedesignatedEmergencyContact.

    ISPteammembersarenotrequiredtobetrainedinEpiPenadministration,oropioidoverdosereversaldrugadministration(Naloxone).Incaseofsuspectedoverdose,simplycall911.

    Rarely,aparticipantsufferingfromamental,emotionalorbehavioraldisorderwillbecomedisruptiveonanovernightretreat.Forthesafetyandwellbeingoftheotherparticipantsandfacilitators,itisstronglyadvisedtoremovetheparticipantfromtheretreatassoonaspossible.Ifimmediatetransportisn’tpossible,theparticipantshouldbeaskedtostayintheirroomuntildeparture;heorshemaynotjoininanyretreatactivities,includingmeals.Foodcanbebroughttotheparticipant’sroomifnecessary.Toensurethesafetyofourvolunteers,werequirethattwo(2)teammembersbepresentinthevehiclewhentransportingaparticipanthomeearlyforbehavioralornon-complianceissues.(Thisisnotrequiredwhentransportingaparticipanthomeearlyduetophysicalillness.)Theleadteammembershouldalertthereferringhousing/recoveryprogramofthesituationsotheyareawareandreadytogreettheindividualuponarrival.Ingeneral,ISPteammembersshouldusetheirbestjudgmentwhetheritissafeandreasonabletotransportparticipantswhobecomeproblematic.AsanISPteammember,youhavetherighttorefusetodriveanindividualifyoufeeluncomfortabledoingso.Inthiscase,itisappropriatetocallthereferringagencytoseeiftheywillcomeandpickuptheindividual. Ifaparticipantbecomesverballyabusiveorbeginsactinginaviolentorthreateningway,theleadteammembershouldcall911andhavetheindividualremovedbythepolice.Theparticipant’sreferringagencyshouldbenotifiedimmediately.

    Weather-RelatedIntheeventofasevereweatheremergency,fireorothernaturaldisaster,followthebroadcastedadviceofauthorities(e.g.,“takecover”),orotherwisefollowpostedevacuationplans.Whenappropriate,andassoonaspossible,informyourlocalcoordinatorandtheISPDirectorofProgramsoftheemergency.

    TransportationIntheeventanaccidentoccurswhiletransportingaparticipanttoorfromanISPretreatoraffiliatedprogram,followtheseprocedures:

    1. Assessthesituationandinformtheproperauthorities(Call911)withanyimmediatemedicalemergencies.

    2. CallthelocalPoliceDepartmentandrequestareportbetaken.3. Exchangeinsuranceinformationwiththedriveroftheothervehicle.4. Callotherteammembersandreferringagenciestoinformthemofthesituation.5. CalltheISPDirectorofProgramsandprovidethefollowingdetails:

    SubstanceUse/Non-complianceUseofalcohol,marijuanaorotherintoxicatingsubstancesarestrictlyprohibitedonISPovernightretreats.Anyparticipantfoundorsuspectedofusingordistributingalcoholorcontrolledsubstancesorotherwiseactinginadisruptive,non-compliantmannermustbetransportedhomeimmediately.Toensurethesafetyofourvolunteers,werequirethattwo(2)teammembersbepresentinthevehiclewhentransportingaparticipanthomeearlyforreasonsofsubstanceuseornon-compliance.Teammembersshouldalertthereferringhousing/recoveryprogramofthesituationsotheyareawareandreadytogreettheindividualuponarrival.Forthesafetyandwellbeingoftheotherparticipantsandfacilitators,itisstronglyadvisedtoremovetheproblematicparticipantfromtheretreatassoonaspossible.Ifimmediatetransportisn’tpossible,theparticipantshouldbeaskedtostayintheirroomuntildeparture;theymaynotjoininanyretreatactivities,includingmeals.Foodcanbebroughttotheparticipant’sroomifnecessary. Ifaparticipantbecomesverballyabusiveorbeginsactinginaviolentorthreateningway,theleadteammembershouldcall911andhavetheindividualremovedbythepolice.Theparticipant’sreferringagencyshouldbenotifiedimmediately.

    VolunteerWaiverofLiabilityandConsenttoRelease

    Asavolunteerteammember,IconsenttoparticipationinISPretreatandaffiliatedprogramsandvoluntarilyandwillinglyassumeallresponsibilityforallrisksanddangersassociatedwithmyparticipation.Asavolunteer,IagreetoberesponsiblefinanciallyforanylossesresultingfrommyactionsandwillindemnifyISP,anditsofficers,directors,employeesandagents,fromanylossordamageImaycauseduringISPretreatsoraffiliatedprograms.Inconsiderationofthis,IherebywaiveallclaimsandcausesofactionagainstISP,anditsofficers,directors,employeesandagentsandherebyholdharmlesstheseindividualsfromallliabilityexceptsuchlossordamagewhichwascausedbythesolenegligenceorwillfulmisconductbytheaforementioned.IconsentandgivepermissiontoISPtophotographorotherwiseusemylikenessinconnectionwithanyISPactivitiesforpromotionalpurposes.IunderstandthatanysuchphotographsandlikenessesandallrightsassociatedwiththemwillbelongsolelyandexclusivelytoISP,whichshallhavetheabsoluterighttocopyright,reproduce,alter,display,distribute,destroy,and/orpublishtheminanyformincluding,butnotlimitedto,print,electronic,video,and/orInternet.Iagreetowaiveanyandallrightswithrespecttoanysuchphotographsorlikenessesincludingcompensation,copyright,andprivacyrightsandanyrighttoinspectorapprovesuchphotographsorlikenessesand/orcopy,print,orothermaterialsthatmaybeusedin
