Psychodynamic counselling is based on the belief that the past influences the present in ways that we are not always aware of. A psychodynamic counsellor will strive to help clients recognise the possible source of some of their issues e.g. unhelpful relationship patterns. Another important aspect of psychodynamic work is the way that various feelings, such as anxiety, are being managed.

This two-year diploma qualifies you to practice in a public practice and you will also be equipped to open your own private practice.

If your paid or voluntary role involves counselling people and you want to develop your competence or progress to becoming a professional counsellor, this course is designed to meet your personal and professional needs.

Counselling

The course will provide you with the necessary training in skills and theory to meet the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy requirements in those areas to accredit individual counsellors. It would then be your responsibility to seek individual accreditation which entails further supervised practice and completion of the necessary written evidence.

The Diploma course is psychodynamic in orientation with some consideration of the humanistic approach. To qualify you must have already completed a Level 3 Counselling course.

Nescot is one of the very few colleges within travelling distance of London to offer a Higher Education course in Animal Management. Animal and land-based careers are enjoying unprecedented growth in the UK and people are actively being sought to fill skills shortages.

The college has devoted more than half of its campus to a modern City Farm and Nescot is now using its years of experience working within the land-based industry to offer a Foundation Degree.

This curriculum area has a dynamic, dedicated, enthusiastic team of lecturers who are highly respected by our students. Our members of staff are all qualified teachers who have both vocational and academic experience and they are qualified to degree or Masters Level. They also have extensive practical work experience within the industry, both national and international, and they use this to provide students with industry-appropriate knowledge and skills.

We also provide animal care courses at levels 1, 2 and 3 and these have provided a strong progression route for students in the past. In our animal facility we have a wide range of small animals, reptiles and amphibians, both domestic and exotic. Our farm maintains a varied range of livestock animals including cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and pigs.

Animal Management

The Foundation Degree in Animal Management enables students to develop the skills and knowledge required to work in the hugely varied land-based industry. It gives a broad overview of working with animals as well as giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge base in animal anatomy, physiology, health, welfare, behaviour, ecology and animal husbandry. It is designed to provide students with the practical skills required and academic competency to excel within this extensive industry. The Foundation Degree also provides a gateway to a range of Higher Education options.

At the same time, this theory is put into practice at Nescot’s substantial animal care facilities. The course gives students the opportunity to develop a high standard of education within the comfort of a vocational setting that is not commonly available at Higher Education Institutions.

The Teacher Training Department at Nescot prides itself on flexible and targeted provision of courses for those who want to teach in the post-sixteen, lifelong learning sector.

These courses are designed for those with a real passion for teaching and they will show you how to transmit that passion directly to your students in the classroom arena, whilst giving you the solid qualifying foundations you need to teach in this exciting sector.

Our staff have years of teaching experience in schools, colleges, corporate training and staff development and also within specific community groups. We have specialised expertise across a range of needs including behavioural and dyslexia. There are very few challenges within teaching that our staff have not met before and they fully understand the demands on the modern practitioner.

Teacher Training

Our students range from those who have spent years in a teaching environment and want to take their careers to another level, to those who have little experience in the sector but have the passion and drive to succeed. The structure and timings of our courses are designed for those with busy working and family lives.

We keep our class sizes small, at around sixteen students, so you not only get much more individual attention from your tutors but build a real relationship with your classmates. Our expert tutors will also pinpoint the areas you are most challenged by and give you the personal skills and tools to master them.

We encourage you to learn from one another and bring your own experiences to the course using group work sessions, paired work and class discussions. You will even observe and evaluate one another’s teaching sessions as well as observing talented advanced practitioners in action.

Osteopathy

The International College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) at Nescot is a leading provider of osteopathic education. We have been offering professional osteopathy training for more than 20 years. Our students rate us particularly highly for our experienced teaching staff, small class sizes, excellent pastoral care and modern clinic facilities.

Our busy teaching clinic has more than 3000 patient appointments per year and it is staffed by highly-qualified tutors who supervise the students in assessing and treating patients. In our clinic our students encounter patients of all ages and lifestyles as well as getting the opportunity to work in specialist areas such as paediatrics and sports injuries.

Our Osteopathy students are a mix of younger and mature students, with many of the latter having come to Osteopathy as a career change later in life.

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. In the UK Osteopathy is an allied healthcare profession regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), an organisation with worldwide recognition.

Once you have qualified with one of our four-year degrees you can register as a practicing Osteopath with the GOsC. You can then work as an osteopath in a clinic, the NHS or set up your own practice (we also teach you the practicalities of running your own business). Osteopaths work all over the world and it is currently one the fastest-growing professions in Australia.

Higher apprenticeships provide a different route to gain Level 4 qualifications or above, with most apprentices gaining an NVQ Level 4, HND, or a foundation degree. Training fees are paid by the government and the employer, so there is no requirement for a student loan for fees.

A higher apprenticeship can take from one to five years to complete, and it involves part-time study at an institution like Nescot. The main appeal of an apprenticeship is that you are working whilst you are studying. This provides you with both an income and real-life experience in your chosen profession. Apprenticeships are designed with employer and industry needs in mind hence they are very relevant to the job you’ll be doing.

Higher Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship also gives you a head start in employment as government figures say that 90% of apprentices in England stay on in employment, 71% of them with the same employer.

Our dedicated Apprenticeships Team can help you whether you have a job or not, you can contact them on 0208 394 3051. We maintain strong links with employers and our Employer Hub regularly has vacancies for apprentices.

A ‘full-time’ course doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be in college five days a week. Timetables vary between courses, but we aim to schedule classes, tutorials, lectures and assessments in a way that helps you manage your time efficiently. In some cases we’re also able to be flexible with our entry requirements, for example accepting substantial work experience in lieu of some academic qualifications.

Mature Students Over the last four years, 44% of students enrolling on our Higher Education courses have been mature students. Whether you’re starting a new career, changing jobs or adding to your professional qualifications, we work hard to help you balance your studies with your other commitments so that you reach your full potential.

If you’re balancing your studies with caring for young children you could make use of our on-site nursery, Nestots, which cares for children aged up to five.

We think our borough is a great place to study. It’s also a great place to make your home, and to start or relaunch your career.

Epsom and Ewell

Epsom and Ewell has something for everyone, and was ranked as the seventh happiest place to live in the country in 2017.

Epsom is a lively town with a shopping centre, restaurants, bars, pubs, nightclubs and a theatre, while Ewell is a quiet and picturesque village.

The borough has plenty of green open spaces, from the compact and historic Bourne Hall in Ewell to the 250-acre Nonsuch Park on the borough’s borders.

Epsom is also host to the famous Derby, billed as the world’s greatest flat race, which has been a fixture of the horse racing calendar since the inaugural race in 1780 and which attracted 154,000 people to Epsom Downs in 2016.
