The Hymn of Praise A.M.E. Hymnal #306

King of My Life (Lead Me to Calvary)

King of my life I crown thee now - Thine shall the glory be;Lest I forget thy thorn-crowned brow, Lead me to Calvary.

Refrain:Lest I forget Gethsemane: Lest I forget thine agony,Lest I forget thy love for me, Lead me to Calvary.

Show me the tomb where Thou wast laid, Tenderly mourned and wept;Angels in robes of light arrayed, Guarded thee whilst thou slept.

[Refrain]

Let me like Mary, through the gloom, Come with a gift to thee;Show to me now the empty tomb - Lead me to Calvary.

[Refrain]

4 May I be willing, Lord, to bear, Daily my cross for thee;Even thy cup of grief to share - Thou hast borne all for me.

[Refrain]

Scripture Lesson(Please Stand for the Reading of God’s Word)

Old Testament Deuteronomy 13:1-4 (Common English Bible) ~ Following the Lord

Now if a prophet or a dream interpreter appears among you and performs a sign or wonder for you, and the sign or wonder that was spoken actually occurs; if he says: “Come on! We should follow other gods”—ones you haven’t experienced — “and we should worship them,” you must not listen to that prophet’s or dream interpreter’s words, because the Lord your God is testing you to see if you love the Lord your God with all your mind and all your being. You must follow the Lord your God alone! Revere him! Follow his commandments! Obey his voice! Worship him! Cling to him—no other!

New TestamentResponsive: Mark 8:31-38 (New Living Translation) ~ The Cost of Following Jesus

Leader: Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things

and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law.

He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.

People: As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and

began to reprimand him for saying such things.

Leader: Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away

from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of

view, not from God’s.”

People: Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be

my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow

me.

Leader: If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for

my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you

benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth

more than your soul?

ALL: If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful

days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the

glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Proclamation of The Word Pastor Larry E. Campbell

The Invitation to Christian Discipleship

The Apostle’s Creed

Minister: Let us profess before God and one another our common faith.

Minister and People: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. The third day He arose from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Church universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER OR HOLY COMMUNION

THE SOLICITATION

You that do truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbor, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in His holy ways, draw near with faith and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling.

THE GENERAL CONFESSION

Minister: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Minister and People:

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word, and deed against Your divine Majesty, provoking most justly Your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father for Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake; forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your name through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. (Choral). (You may be seated).

THE FIRST COLLECT

Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, who of Your great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto You, have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins; confirm and strengthen us in all goodness; and bring us to everlasting life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Choral Response: Amen.

THE SECOND COLLECT

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid,

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love

You, and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Choral Response: Amen.

THE PRAYER OF ADORATION

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty that we shall at all times and in all places give

Thanks unto You, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. Therefore, with angels

and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your Holy Name,

evermore praising You and saying Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts; heaven and earth are

full of Your glory. Glory be to You, O Lord, most high.

Choral Response: Amen.

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

O Merciful Lord, we do not come to Your holy table trusting in our own grace and mercy, but

in the greatness of Your mercy. We are not worthy enough to gather up the crumbs under Your

table. You are the Lord and Your love has met and always will meet every human need. Grant

us humble access to Your love in the sacramental feast of the body and blood of Jesus Christ

and wash away our sinful pride, so that, in mercy we may be drawn near to You and to Him, Who

with the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever.

Choral Response: Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.

THE CELEBRANT CONSECRATION

Minister: All glory, power and honor to You, Almighty God, Holy Father, Creator of heaven and earth. Who did make us in Your own image. And when we fell into sin, You of Your tender mercy did give Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ, to take our nature upon Him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption: Who made there, by His Own oblation of Himself once offered, a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world: And instituted and commanded us to continue this perpetual memorial of His precious death until His Coming again.

For in the night in which He was betrayed, He took bread; and when He had given thanks to You, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also, after supper, He took the cup; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you; for this is My blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for you and many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Therefore, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. And, believing the witness of His resurrection, we await His Coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast.

Gracious God, You are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Bless and sanctify these gifts with Your Holy Spirit and bless us to Your service that we may faithfully receive in unity and peace the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Scripture of the Day

Following Jesus. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Quote of the DayThe road that leads to heaven is risky, lonely, and costly in this world, and few are willing to pay the price. Following Jesus involves losing your life-and finding new life in him.

David Platt

Thought of the Week“Go and proclaim the kingdom of God... No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” —Luke 9:60, 62.Throughout the Old Testament we see God shaping his children, asking them to follow his lead, instructing them to obey, requiring their commitment.Jesus does the same here. “Follow me,” he says to the disciples. “Follow me,” he says to a man walking alongside him. “Go and proclaim the kingdom of God,” he says to a man who says he must bury his father.Jesus calls for commitment. “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Jesus asks us to be all in, to invest ourselves fully. There’s no turning back, no second thoughts.Have you made commitments and then backed out? Relational commitments, job commitments, volunteer commitments? Sometimes when the going gets tough, people just drop out.God challenges us up front: Commit now, fully. He wants to make sure we know that this is a serious commitment. He is not calling us to be rude to our loved ones or to abandon our family members who might depend on us. But the commitment to live for him is not something we can do half-heartedly. Jesus has given his all for us, and he calls us to live for him with all of our being—with our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). Do you hear him saying, “Follow me”?

Humor of the WeekA man walks out on his front porch one day and sees a gorilla in the tree on his front lawn. He calls animal control and about an hour later a man shows up with a ladder, a pit bull, and a shotgun. The animal control employee tells the man, "I'm here to get the gorilla out of your tree. I'm going to use this ladder to climb up the tree and shake the branch the gorilla is on to knock him to the ground. The pit bull is trained to go after anything that falls from the tree and bites their balls which calms the animal down so I can put him in the truck." The man says "Okay, I see what the ladder and the pit bull are for but what is the shotgun for?" The animal control employee says, "Oh, that's for you. In case I fall out of the tree instead of the gorilla."
