Strong HSC results are the product of a positive learning culture, a recognised attribute of St Patrick’s College Strathfield. Our staff and students have shared goals and vision – they know where they are going, and our students are clear about the actions that they need to take for these goals to be fulfilled. There is also strong collegiality – we are in this together. Student and staff relationships are built upon trust and understanding. The professional bonds that exist amongst staff members are strong enough to weather the storms that can hit school communities. We enjoy a shared sense of belonging, purpose, and a desire for the vision of the College to be fulfilled. No-one is working for themselves; no-one is left out. There is evidence of continuous improvement and lifelong learning – we can always get better. Year 12 students who are part of our positive school culture know that there is always capacity and room for improvement. Opportunities for learning and development are seen in all aspects of school life and not just limited to school life and not just limited to course study. Staff are empowered to view themselves as lifelong learners and to help facilitate the learning of others within the school. Learning is seen as a key part of the adult learning journey, enabling individuals to achieve ever varying degrees of personal and professional maturity.

In my albeit brief time here, I have witnessed the commitment to risk taking – we learn by trying something new. Where risk taking is commonplace, there is a freedom, courage and a joy in which teachers and students go about their daily tasks. Creativity is let loose, and individuals discover previously unidentified routes for fulfilling their potential. In this culture, a growth mind-set is adopted by all and as such, mistakes are not seen as failure but as a source of learning and growth. By trialling ideas and initiatives and

experimenting with new ways of doing things, students, staff, and school leaders learn what works and what does not and become bigger, better versions of themselves. And finally, there is celebration and humour: we feel good about ourselves! Boys’ achievements (whether big or small) are appreciated and celebrated. Research has shown that when we feel good about ourselves and our achievements are recognised, we not only feel better about ourselves, but it also optimises the way in which our brains function. We are more likely to enter a state of flow and so maximise our own levels of performance. Thus, celebrating team and individual success is key to the development of high performing schools. There is much joy and laughter present in SPC school life.

To that end, I offer my thanks to our teaching staff for their dedicated work with our boys and for all that they do to keep a positive school culture alive and growing. This is inclusive of all staff from Year 5 to Year 12. We do not suddenly just become HSC ready in the last year of school. It is a continuum of learning that commenced many years ago that has led to this point. Congratulations to the Class of 2020 on your fine academic results in the Higher School Certificate. You succeeded in a very challenging COVID-19 affected year. In large part your success is due to your optimism, work ethic and consistent effort throughout your school life.

Our College is proudly Catholic and non-selective. We welcome students from across the academic and learning spectrum. Our aim is to provide learning growth that is measurable. This will differ for each child. There are many students in the HSC who will not rate a mention for a Band 6 result, or a high ATAR, yet they have achieved marvellous results and demonstrated tangible gains with their learning. These students deserve our equal recognition and applause. While this publication celebrates academic learning, we place the primacy of our Edmund Rice tradition at the forefront of our achievements.

We expect much of our SPC graduate. Not only does he work very hard in his studies, but he is equally challenged to take time to value, engage with, and help, those who have less than we do. The poor in our world deserve the best of us. The SPC graduate carries with him a sense of service to the ‘other’ and a commitment to carrying this into life beyond school.

I offer my warmest congratulations to all students from the Class of 2020. Your results reflect a wide array of skills and talents, with excellence demonstrated in many subjects but particularly in Mathematics Advanced, PDHPE, Business Studies, Mathematics Standard 2, and Studies of Religion I. I pay particular tribute to Anthony Sukkar our Dux for 2020, and Lemuel Fernandez our Proxime Accessit. Additionally, Jeremy Short and Connor Barry were in the Top Achievers’ List for coming in the top ten in Studies of Religion I and Construction, respectively. In total we had 114 mentions in the Distinguished Achievers’ List (Band 6 or E4) nominations and two All-Round Achievers (distinguished results in all of their subjects) by Jeremy Short and Thomas Winters. I commend this publication to you as a record of our outstanding HSC results for 2020. Well done to all!

Congratulations to our high achievers of the graduating Class of 2020 on their excellent Higher School Certificate results.

One hundred and forty- seven Year 12 students sat the HSC examinations in 2020. Fifty-four students made the Distinguished Achievers’ List one hundred and sixteen times and as far as we know, thirty students, 30% of the Class of 2020, attained an ATAR above 90. In particular, congratulations to the two students who were placed on the State’s All Rounders’ List and to the two students who were placed on the Top Achievers’ List for highest rankings in the State. The details of these outstanding student performances are detailed in this publication.

In twenty-five out of thirty-two (78%) courses examined, the College examination average was above that of the State examination average. Ten (31%) courses had a school vs State variation greater than five. For example, Business Studies was 6.55 above the State average; Industrial Technology 16.92 above; Information Processes and Technology 6.69 above; Italian Beginners 9.82 above; Mathematics Extension 2 11.34 above; Mathematics Standard 2 5.04 above; Modern History 5.80 above; PD/Health/PE 8.54 above; Physics 6.05 above; and Visual Arts was 5.65 above the State average.

There were sixteen courses (50% of courses sat) where the percentage representation of students with a mark of 90% or above, i.e., Band 6 or E4, was greater than that of the State. Many courses were significantly greater. For example, in Ancient History 20.00% of College candidates attained a Band 6 compared to 8.78% for the State; in Business Studies 15.94% compared to 9.29%; in Construction 20.00% compared to 3.94%; in English Extension 1 71.42% compared to 38.72%; in Industrial Technology 33.33% compared to 8.07%; in Italian Beginners 33.33% compared to 15.90%; in Italian Extension 100% compared to 57.14%; in Mathematics Extension 2 100% compared to 36.29%; in Modern History 15.78% compared to 10.15%; in PD/Health/PE 21.56% compared to 9.13%; and in Visual Arts 27.27% compared to 16.83% for the State.

Similarly, there were twenty-five courses (78%) where the percentage representation of students in the two highest performance bands representing a percentage mark equal or above 80%, i.e., Bands 5/E3 and 6/E4, were greater than that of the State. For example, in Business Studies 60.86% of College candidates performed in the two top bands compared to 34.91% for the State; in Construction 60.00% compared to 30.43%; in Industrial Technology 83.33% compared to 23.71%; in Information Processes & Technology 42.85% compared to 32.10%; in Legal Studies 53.84% compared to 39.40%; in Mathematics Advanced 64.70% compared to 52.46%; in Modern History 52.62% compared to 37.13%; in PD/Health/PE 60.77% compared to 34.19%; and in Physics 61.10% compared to 40.36% for the State.

Bearing in mind that the College is an academically non-selective comprehensive boys’ school, the 2020 HSC results are excellent. St Patrick’s College is a school where ordinary boys achieve extraordinary things. This publication represents an ongoing testament to the consistently strong academic performance achieved by our senior students each and every year in the Higher School Certificate and I commend its reading to you.
