2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT 3

To the Lott Carey family gathered virtually for the 124th Annual Session, I greet you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has

sustained us by his grace and mercy.

This report is a summary of the year under review and seeks to allow you to see what we were able to accomplish together. As with the fiscal year 2019/2020, this last year saw some of

the same challenges brought on by COVID-19. Notwithstanding, we once again experienced the Providence of God. You will read in this report how Lott Carey was able to continue our outreach, both domestically and globally. Thanks for the prayers and generous support of so many.

Who are we?

The Lott Carey movement was founded in 1897 by African American Baptists who were committed to a substantial international mission thrust – especially on the African continent. They believed that nothing should distract the church from executing its primary objective of advancing God’s mission throughout the world. Since our founding as the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society, we have single-mindedly engaged in Christian missions around the world.

We bear the name of the Rev. Lott Carey, whose fascinating story has served as inspiration for generations. Born enslaved in 1780 in Charles City County, Virginia, Lott Carey became a disciple of Jesus in 1807, purchased his freedom in 1813, and led the first Baptist missionaries to Africa from the United States in 1821. His pioneering missionary team settled in Liberia, where he engaged in evangelism, education, and health care. Rev. Carey served as a well-respected and gifted missional and civic leader until his death in 1828. He was also the organizing pastor for the first Baptist church in Liberia – the Providence Baptist Church in Monrovia. His life of commitment, leadership, vision, and perseverance continue to guide us.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, we were a Black Baptist organization that engaged in missions on the African continent. In the 21st centuries, we are a multicultural, ecumenical, global Christian missional community born of African American Baptist heritage.

What do we do? Our Mission

We provide prayer partnership, financial support, and technical assistance to indigenous communities around the world who engage in ministries of evangelism, compassion, empowerment, and advocacy. We work with people from various ethnic identities, diverse Christian traditions, and different faith communities around shared values and interests to help build a better world.

Over our 124 years of mission engagement, we have impacted the following countries: Australia, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Haiti, India, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Philippians, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Currently, we are financially supporting fourteen (14) ministries in eleven (11) countries, including our disaster relief services here in the United States.

Thriving in Ministry

This program is made possible by grants received from the Lilly Endowment. Currently, we have 24 lead women pastors and 22 millennial pastors participating.

In January 2021, Lott Carey released a new podcast series that draws from the wisdom of Black pastors. “Pilgrimages of Thriving” explores how Black pastoral leaders in the United States flourish in their various ministerial contexts. The podcast series consist of 36 interview-based episodes, each highlighting a prominent Black pastoral leader. Production on the series, produced jointly by Lott Carey and Good Faith Media, began shortly after it was announced in August 2020. Gratitude

I learned very early the importance of saying thanks. I am thankful for the diligence and commitment of our current staff team, Mrs. Tonga Peterson and Mr. Atiba Goatley. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that office operations, especially in this season of COVID-19, functioned uninterrupted. I would also like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Barbara T. Crump and Rev. Dr. Evans L. Spagner for their leadership and commitment to our Mission Education programming.

Ms. Kathi Reid, who served as disaster services manager, retired after ten years of dedicated services. We will have an opportunity to express our appreciation to Sis. Reid during the 2022 Annual Session. Also leaving the staff team was Ms. Takeshia Klu. Ms. Klu assisted with the coordination of our short-term missions and disaster services. The Board of Directors, under the leadership of Dr. John M. Alexander, Jr. was a tremendous help in advancing the mission of Lott Carey. I am grateful for the relationship that exists between the staff and the board. I extend my most profound appreciation to President Gregory Jackson for his support, guidance, and leadership. As he completes his service as president, I pray for God’s blessings on him. To our international partners, thank you. Lott Carey is, because of you. You have been faithful in serving the communities to which you have been called. To all of our pastors, congregations, and friends, thanks for helping us “keep the lights on.” Finally, to my wife Suan, and children, LeAnn, Emmett, Jr., and Annette, thanks for your encouragement and support.

ETHIOPIA

Dear Lott Carey Family,

Blessings to our Brothers and Sisters of the Lotte Carey family. We pray for the health and safety of all of you. Our lives and mission are blessed by our friendship and partnership with you.

The COVID-19 pandemic is still a huge issue so we really

do not have a lot of updates to report. But, one big development is 90% of the university students now are coming from rural areas, meaning our existence is needed more than ever. Even though the primary focus of our mission is still trying to tackle HIV/AIDS, education about HIV/AIDS is front-and-center to our mission.

Studies show the culture of university campus life appears to be ambivalent about, or even open to sugar daddy practices, sexual experimentation, unprotected and/or casual sex, gender violence, multiple partnerships, and similar high-risk activities. In the context of our mission, with the help of Lotte Carey’s partnership in regards to HIV/AIDS, we need to be vigilant in disseminating information to the student communities since such cultures are in danger of encouraging risk, and thereby abetting death. As a result, university campuses are regarded as high-risk environments for transmission of HIV/AIDS.

Thanks to the Lott Carey family, the mobile testing centers are still being used for health awareness, counseling, emergency contraceptives and pregnancy tests. COVID-19 has made it very difficult for people to come to us, so the mobile testing centers have allowed us to go to them. Thus, the mobile testing ministry have become absolutely lifesaving! We still emphasize teaching awareness, giving people knowledge of HIV status, plus giving information to help them make decisions to protect themselves, and the people around them from spreading the disease.

Lott Carey has been supporting our fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic since 2006, and this relationship is now more important to AAII than ever. Without your help we would not be able to reach people to create awareness, to provide on-the-spot testing, or offer nutritional and medical help wherever they are needed. With your help we are also able to assist university students with disabilities. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic the whole world is facing right now, understandably, it has been difficult to receive the financial help our mission needs at the present time. But we ask for the family to pray for us and the whole world, as that is needed more right now.

GUYANA

Salutation

The Guyana Missionary Baptist Church –Lott Carey (GMBC) extends best wishes to the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention (Lott Carey) on its 124th Annual Session. We salute The Reverend Gregory

Jackson, President of Lott Carey; The Reverend Dr. John Alexander, Chairman of the Board; The Reverend Emmet Dunn, Executive Secretary-Treasurer; all other Lott Carey officers and participants at the 124th Annual Session that is taking place virtually under the theme, Engage: Transforming the World through Mission Advocacy; Justice; Empowerment; and Evangelism. We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to empower and direct the Lott Carey global family as we recommit ourselves to God’s mission mandate for the Church. It is my distinct honor to provide Lott Carey with the GMBC Annual Report for 2020-2021. This is the second chronicle of our ministry amidst the global pandemic caused by COVID -19.

Origins and Present Focus GMBC was founded by The Reverend A. Carlyle Miller, B.A., M.D. and The Reverend Ermeline “Erma” Miller, M.S. in 1960. A context of doctrinal disputes in the Guyana Congregational Church lay the foundation for GMBC birth. Unable to find common ground on the issue of believers’ baptisms by immersion, our founders parted ways with the Congregational Church and started the GMBC. GMBC’s original focus was evangelism, Christian formation, mission outreach, and Christian stewardship. GMBC’s ministry focus is still the same. However, through the years our approach has evolved to ensure that we remain true to the gospel and relevant to the people we serve. Additionally, our various partnerships and professional relationships have helped us to expand our reach globally.

GMBC Christian Witness & Lott Carey’s Partnership GMBC is important to the Christian witness today because it continues to empower congregations and communities to participate in the transformative work of God’s Church through evangelism, Christian formation, mission outreach, and Christian stewardship. At GMBC we affirm that mission is God’s mandate for the church, and our mission partnership in the global Lott Carey family provides opportunities for reciprocal mission engagement. As our primary supporting partner, Lott Carey continues to support us in our efforts “to be the church at work in today’s world” as is relevant and fitting for our context. Additionally, being a part of the global Lott Carey family provides practical and concrete examples of what it means to be a part of the Church Universal.

GMBC Local and Global ImpactGMBC’s core values are community, care, compassion, and generosity. Traditionally GMBC congregations minister to approximately 1000 persons weekly, and the medical clinic serves about 400 patients weekly. However, 2020-2021 has been wrought with very unusual circumstances as we continue to grapple with the lock downs and other effects of COVID-19.

Community – GMBC believes the church is called to be a community of believers (Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-35), who desire to follow Christ and live in neighborly relationships with one another. Therefore, GMBC pastors encourage opportunities to foster Christian community among congregants. Additionally, GMBC Youth, Women, Men, and Clergy councils work at a national level to coordinate various

opportunities to facilitate community amongst GMBC congregations. The Councils bolster teachings which facilitate Christian growth, promote fellowship and encourage leadership development. Some highlights of our life together during this reporting period are indicated below:

We hosted three nights of evangelistic outreach and revivals during this celebration.

This event provided opportunities for youth to share their testimonies and to pray for each other, our national, regional, and global family. The keynote preacher was GMBC Minister Shaunessy Profitt. This was a virtual event hosted on Zoom.

Care – GMBC continues to minister to individuals, families, and the larger communities we serve. We believe each member in our family of faith should be cherished; supported and encouraged in their Christian walk. As a church community we demonstrate care by providing life-long spiritual learning opportunities, prayer support, Christian counseling, and scholarship support for students perusing tertiary education.

• Bible Studies – When believers meet to study God’s word together, they foster accountability, connection, encouragement, and unconditional love. Such an environment

also promotes spiritual growth and helps believers to put biblical precepts into practice. We utilize the adult Christian education materials from the Caribbean Christian Publications for our Bible studies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic. our Bible studies continue to take place weekly on What’s App and Zoom. Churches with limited internet access are hosting their bible studies on Sundays immediately before worship service.

• Prayer Gatherings – When we take time to pray for and with God’s people, we can listen to the Holy Spirit and see God working in real people during real-life circumstances. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, our prayer meetings have been taking place virtually on What’s App and Zoom. Pastors and deacons also visit homes to pray with families as needed.

• Sunday School – Due to COVID 19 pandemic our Sunday School continues to meet virtually on Zoom. These gatherings have provided a stable and consistent Christian education community for our children and youths. We utilize the Christian education materials from the Caribbean Christian Publications for our Sunday school program.

o Adrianna London, Culinary Science, Carnegie School Home of Economics. Congratulations to Adrianna who has successfully completed her course of studies and earned some distinctions.

Compassion – Guided by Exodus 34:6, we understand compassion is constitutive of God’s very being. We further understand that ministries of compassion must affirms the Image of God in the people we serve. Hence, we work hard to ensure that our various mission outreach projects help affirm the dignity of the people we serve. During the year in review, we joined our partners at the Ministry of Public Health, Food for the Poor, and the Ministry of Education to address health disparities, food insecurities, and educational disparities in the communities we serve.

• The A. Carlyle Miller Health Center and Cottage Hospital continues to provide invaluable service to people of Long Creek and its environs. This clinic offers stellar service in maternal and child health. This clinic is also providing COVID-19 vaccines. We give God thanks for the medical team, their hard work and committed service.

• GMBC Learning Clubs continue to provide academic support for primary and high school children who were preparing for our national and regional exams. INDIA

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul;

therefore, will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh

him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord

Isaiah 60:1-3

Greetings to you in the Precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Praise the Lord for His continuous protection and mercy upon us especially during the pandemic situation due to COVID-19. The fast spreading of

COVID-19 all over the globe and its drastic impact made life miserable for the people. Many of them lost their loved ones, and in some cases, their only earning member of the family, and are facing an unsure future.

Nearly eight decades have passed since the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention extended its helping hand to support the poor and needy of the Indian subcontinent. The poor and untouchables of India, especially the leprosy patients, knew the Love of Jesus through the pioneering Mission work of stalwarts like Rev. J H Nelson, Rev. Dr. Abner Frank Nelson and Dr. (Mrs.) Ivy Frey Nelson, who were the pioneers in the Mission’s work in India, backed by the sacrificial financial and prayer support from our brothers and sisters across the globe in the States.

The focus of the Mission--preaching, teaching and healing remains the same throughout all these years, though the magnitude of the work has increased tremendously.

The poor remain poor or poorer, and the rich are getting richer every day in India, as in many other countries. The dreaded epidemic COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on the financial, physical and mental health of our citizens. Millions of migrant labourers lost their daily bread and were left with no option other than to go back to their home states, due to closure of manufacturing units and lock down. Our work was also affected severely due to restrictions in movement of the staff due to lockdown and scarcity of medicines and equipment. Yet through all this pandemic, the Love of Christ was manifested through us by the selfless service of our staff, particularly our medical teams. In spite of threat to their personal safety, they put the needs of their suffering sisters and brothers first, and did not leave their post.

Instead of thinking their village is the world, the Convention, in its initial stage, understood that the World is their Village, and all people of this planet regardless of cast, creed and colour are their brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Partnering with Lott Carey Convention gave our thoughts and aspirations a new dimension. The much needed prayer support from different parts of the globe reached and rejuvenated our humble efforts in bringing the Love of Christ in Action to the poor and needy of our great country. Through LCC we realised we are not alone, and there are people who are suffering equally or in worse conditions, including illiteracy and poverty, in other parts of the world.

The main areas of our Ministry are three: 1. Preaching, 2. Teaching and 3. Healing.

1. The Ministry of PreachingBy the Grace of God, we were blessed with three more churches, including house churches during the report year. Now we have eleven churches and five prayer groups. Rev. C. V. Valson, through whom the Good Lord works for the enhancement of His Kingdom, is a tireless worker in the vineyard of the Lord. Through him the Lord established eight churches within a short span of fifteen years. I am thankful to the Lord for giving us workers like Pastor Valson, who, though he is affected in one eye, carries on the good work.

Grandchildren of the first batch of Nursery students of this school now study where their grandparents studied.

b) Somerville Non-formal Education Project, Amar Nagar, Faridabad, HaryanaEstablished in 2006. Teacher in charge: Mrs. Anima Kandulna. Number of children: 30

This is a project exclusively for the children of the stone quarry workers, who live in slums in the vicinity and migrate to other work sites where they get jobs. Mrs. Anima Kandulna, is imparting excellent education in the school to more than 30 students of the migrant labourers. However, due to COVID-19, only two months of classes were held. Since the parents of students are extremely poor, they could not afford any smart phones and accessories for online classes. The students are admitted to the local government-run schools after primary education at this project. Since the land is not owned by the Mission, no expansion activities can be undertaken here.

c) Somerville Non-formal School, Anandgram Leprosy Colony, Shahdra, DelhiEstablished in 2014. Number of children: 80 in Nursery.K.G. Staff: Teaching 2, Others 2

Through this project, in partnership with a charitable organisation of the wives of military officers, The Mission serves around 400 children from slums and nearby villages in NOIDA. Our Mission has provided the required classrooms and transportation for these marginalised children from slum colonies. We were also able to provide 4 Samsung Galaxy Tablets for the most deserving students, for which they are very thankful.

Regular classes could not be held due to the pandemic, but this project is conducting online classes for its students. Sometimes children share parents’ mobile phone for online classes.

h) Scholarships and Financial Aid to Poor and NeedyApproximately 169 students were supported by the Mission during the reporting year for their education and hostel expenses and 9 of these students received training in nursing courses. The Mission provides financial aid to many poor and needy persons, be it for their medical treatment or setting up small scale business ventures so they can feed their families.

Public Schools of the MissionThe Mission has four public schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education. The schools are well known for their academic excellence and discipline and for instilling the right values in young minds. Children are mainly from middle and upper middle class families in and around Delhi. The total strength of the four schools is nearly 10,000. The schools are financially self-supporting. Since April 2020, the schools are closed except for the school office, and online teaching is done for all classes. The Government has ordered reduction in fees due to pandemic conditions prevailing in India, and we are finding it difficult to make both ends meet.

From a humble beginning in 1975 with just over 400 students in a central Delhi building, we have come a long way, with nearly 2700 students on roll and an excellent school building with state of the art classrooms. The Lord is good. However, due to COVID-19, we do not have any physical classes, but online classes took place.

The school has completed 23 years since its inception. For the past two successive years the school had 100% first divisions, with more than 80% distinctions and no second division, third division or failures. This school has the distinction of being the first established school in Greater NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh. Due to Covid-19, online classes are being held since April 2020. Dr. Mary Thomas is the Principal of the School.

d) Somerville International School, Sect. 132, NOIDA UP www.somervilleinternational.in Students: 834 Teaching staff: 51 Admin staff: 74

This is the eighth year since the school started functioning. The total capacity of this school is nearly 4000. However, being a new school, the student strength is much less than the capacity. Due to COVID-19, online classes are being held since April 2020. The school is fully air-conditioned and each class has been provided air purifiers. Dr. Gregory K. Moss Sr., former President of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, blessed the school building November 2012, with former Executive Secretary/Treasurer of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley. Miss Marilyn Thomas is the Officiating Principal of the school.

Involvement of Somerville School Students in Social WorkMonthly rations are given to nearly 30 families of HIV/AIDS patients by the school children of Somerville School, Vasundhara Enclave. Further, the school supplies food and other essential items on a monthly basis to a nearby Christian orphanage, which is a considerable help to its 150 residents. During Christmas season, students collect various gift items and present them to the children of our Non-formal Education Projects, who are from the economically backward sections of the society. Thus, the Somerville students are engaging themselves in community welfare work from an early age.

3. Ministry of Healinga) HIV/AIDS awareness project

Our Mission started one of the first clinics/mini-hospitals with 7 beds for HIV/AIDS patients in 2006. However, due to the rush of the patients for treatment, and our inability to cope with the number of patients, we had to close down the clinic. Since 2015, we are engaged in an Awareness Programme on HIV/AIDS for the public, especially those who belong to the marginalised sections of society, to prevent the spread of this fatal disease. Awareness is spread through magic shows and street plays conducted every week and the local people, who are generally poor and uneducated, eagerly attend these shows. In this way, we create an awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and its prevention.

b) Leprosy Clinics administered by the Mission.

1. Lott Carey Baptist Mission Hospital, Indira Chakraborthy Gram, Karnal, Haryana Established:1970

2. Dr. Ivy Nelson Memorial Leprosy Clinic, Bharat Mata Kusht Ashram, Gandhi Colony, Faridabad, Haryana Established:1970

3. Lott Carey Baptist Mission Clinic, Navjeevan Leprosy Colony, Vaikunt Dham, Panipat, Haryana Established:1984

4. Lott Carey Baptist Mission Clinic, Navjyoti Leprosy Association, Udyog Nagar, Mangolpuri, Delhi Established:1985

5. Gandhi Kusht Ashram, Hissar Road, Rohtak, Haryana Established 1985

6. Dr. Beverly Scott Memorial Clinic, Bethany Leprosy Colony, Gannaur, Haryana. Established: 2013

7. Clinic at Anandgram Leprosy Colony, Shahdra, Delhi Established 2014

When I joined the Mission in 1975, treatment for Leprosy patients was on a rudimentary stage and there were many leprosy patients. However, now we have very good medicines to completely cure this dreaded disease within a couple of years without any deformities, if treatment start at an early stage. However, it is an uphill task, since many of the fresh cases of leprosy are from the migrant labourers. Many of them return to their native places, without giving information as to their whereabouts, due

18 WWW.LOTTCAREY.ORG

INDIA

to the stigma attached to this dreaded disease. Dr. P. K. Tyagi and Dr. Virender Atreja, our faithful and willing doctors, attend to the patients in the leprosy clinics. They also treat general diseases of poor people from the surrounding areas.

c) Mobile ClinicsThe needs of nearly 7500 patients are attended to by our Mobile Clinic services. These clinics have made a tremendous impact on the lives of the poorest of the poor in the area and those who cannot even afford travel expenses to reach the nearest government-run hospitals. These mobile clinics take the doctor to the areas where people live. Tens of thousands of lives have been saved by these clinics. Dr. P. K. Tyagi, who has been in our service for more than 40 years, is the driving force behind this project.

As followers of Jesus Christ, our deeds are appreciated by the community more than our words. People from other religions wonder why we work among the poorest of the poor, without any profit motive. We know that it is the Love of Christ that prompts us to do so. Thus, we witness Christ wherever we carry out our charitable activities, as well as give a values-oriented education to students under our care--whether they are from the rich or poor backgrounds.

Our medical work and helping the poor students from the marginalised sections of society can be carried out only by the prayers and support of our well-wishers in the Convention. We are grateful to you for all the support rendered to us since the late 1940s. When I began to serve as Superintendent of the Mission in 2012, there were 3 churches. By the grace of God, we now have 11 churches and 5 prayer groups. The Lord has been good to us by giving workers like Rev. C. V. Valson whose zeal and vision for the souls of this sub-continent is really marvellous.

The prayers and support of my brothers and sisters of the Convention helped us in attaining this progress, and I praise the Lord for giving us people like you for the expansion of His Kingdom. COVID-19 has taken and is taking a heavy toll on us, and all our works have been on a standstill due to lock down and other restrictions due to

this terrible pandemic. Please pray for the families of our workers who passed away and the workers who lost their near and dear ones in this pandemic. Joblessness is one of the main effects of this pandemic. Most of the medium and small-scale industries are on standstill. Millions lost their livelihood.

We are a country of about 1.36 billion people; it is very difficult to get help and support to all these multitudes, though our Government is trying its best to do so. Your fervent prayers are solicited so that we can climb out of this, and carry on with our lives as usual.

We have some special needs, which includes church buildings in 1) Jyoti Nagar, Panipat, Haryana and 2) Sadabad, Dist Hathras, UP. By the grace of God, we were able to procure land in these areas, but as of now we are short of funds to construct even a small place of worship in these two places. Please pray for this urgent need of the Mission.

We lost nearly half a million people to this deadly pandemic. It has affected our work and especially the public schools, since the parents are unable to pay the school fee of the children since they lost their jobs or are working on reduced salaries. We had to cut a part of the salaries of our staff to partly overcome this financial stress. I am sure the Lord will find a way to help us out of this situation.

I take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Mary George, President of the Lott Carey Baptist Mission in India and Mrs. D. A. Tressler, Chairperson/Director of Somerville Schools, for the excellent support and motivation received from them. I am extremely grateful for their valuable cooperation and suggestions for the betterment of the Mission. A special thanks to the Manager of our schools, Mr. Abraham Mathew, Principals of our schools, Doctors of the Leprosy Colonies, Pastors of the churches, and my colleagues and staff, without whose help, the Mission could not have made such steady progress in various fields.

Our heartfelt gratitude and prayers for the wellbeing of Rev. Gregory Jackson, President of the Convention, Rev. Emmet L. Dunn, Executive Secretary/Treasurer, and Dr. John M. Alexander. Jr., Chairman Board of

Directors of Lott Carey, for their generous support, encouragement and prayers, without which we could not have achieved all that we have done thus far. I thank my brothers and sisters in the Lott Carey Office in the States for their timely help and support. A special word of thanks to Sis. Tonga R. Peterson who is always there to help us. May God bless the Convention abundantly and reward you all for your sacrificial and selfless service for the upliftment of the poor in India, and your genuine care for the masses halfway across the globe.

Getting the Gospel to the masses is getting more and more difficult, and risky as the years roll by. Please pray for the safety of our workers in the Lord’s Vineyard. Once again, I thank my brothers and sisters of member churches of the Convention for their prayers and support. May our God continue to bless us as He has always done in the past.

Greetings

The Trinity Evangelical Ministry (TEM) greets the Lott Carey Foreign Mission family during this the 124th Annual Session. We join with the global family in grappling with the fact we continue to experience one of the most difficult periods in modern history, in the

face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have been deeply saddened by the extent of the loss and pain experienced by so many, yet we continue to hold on to God’s unchanging hand for we are crushed, but not destroyed.

We extend special greetings to the leadership of Lott Carey, Chairman Dr. John M. Alexander, President, The Rev. Dr. Gregory J. Jackson, and Executive Secretary-Treasurer, The Rev. Emmett L. Dunn.

TEM started with a vision of making the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ known to all, especially those in poor and vulnerable situations. Soon the Lord led the founder, Pastor George Coore to a poor rural community in St. Mary, Jamaica, bearing the name Retreat, where he brought the love of Jesus to bear on the people of the area. Pastor Coore explored ways to expand the ministry, which started initially with a Basic School, Summer Programmes for Youth and Medical Clinics.

The ministry has evolved over time offering various services to the community and currently offers skills training in light of the high level of unemployment and poverty faced by many residents in Retreat. The unemployment rate is very high and the young people especially, need skills and entrepreneurship training to facilitate employment in Jamaica’s growth industries: construction, hospitality/tourism and other service industries, as well as for self-employment. The facility, therefore, provides education and training opportunities, for poverty alleviation, employment creation and to address health issues among poor and marginalized youths and adults.

Accredited Skills Training Programs are delivered through partnership with the Human Employment and Resource Training Trust, the National Training Agency of the Government of Jamaica (HEART Trust/NTA). The current skills training program includes Food & Beverage Services, Commercial Food Preparation, Early Childhood Development and Villa Properties and other services. The training lasts for nine (9) months and two (2) cycles of sixty (60) each can be enrolled in a calendar year (the second cycle will carry over to the following year). Usually, the centre trains approximately 85 students per year, but due to the various challenges posed by COVID-19, registration declined over the past year.

Another significant element of the ministry is an Early Childhood Institution (Basic School) for children aged 3-6 years. The Basic School which usually engages approximately 50 students per year also experienced decline as schooling had to be conducted online and through the use of WhatsApp over the past year. This proved very difficult for parents and students, given the age group and need for constant parental supervision. Nevertheless, those who were available were engaged in a sustained manner. Through the instrumentality of Lott Carey, the school has been benefitting from a partnership with the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and much has been accomplished through this relationship. Other usual areas of engagement, such as Vacation Bible School and Health Clinics, were not executed over the past year.

2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT 21

JAMAICA

The mission of the Trinity Evangelical Ministries is to transform lives, families and communities. We celebrate the fact that when young children, youth and young adults come to us, we pass on values and life skills which we have no doubt have helped to shape the lives of so many. We believe in a gospel that is liberating and, therefore, when we are able to impact mind body and soul, we believe that God is glorified.

TEM is grateful to Lott Carey for its funding support of the Skills Training Centre which provides assistance for administrative management, support services and maintenance support. Without this support we simply would not be able to operate. The support we receive will continue to make possible a cadre of trained persons who can benefit through improved employment opportunities, poverty alleviation, youth empowerment and community upliftment.

Over the years TEM has trained highly skilled, globally competitive individuals who can be employed, not only in Jamaica, but the global marketplace. Others establish their own businesses (Entrepreneurship). Persons have been trained in the following skills: Cosmetology, Housekeeping, General Office Administration, Food & Beverage Services, Front Office Agent, Villa Services and Early Childhood Education. Up to 120 persons can be impacted annually.

The centre is badly in need of computers for student use in order to complete elements of the programme. At present there are none available and this places students at a significant disadvantage, especially at such a time as this when online learning has become the norm. There is also need for several commercial items for the kitchen to facilitate Commercial Food Preparation at the level required. Finally, TEM is desirous of becoming more self-sustaining, but require the necessary capital to utilize the property to earn income.

We continue to value the prayers and ongoing support of the Lott Carey family. In the same breath be assured of our prayers even as together we continue to navigate these challenging times. We would also like to commend the leadership of Lott Carey for navigating so skilfully during a year like no other.

Respectfully submitted by Karl Johnson, President, June 2021

KENYA-SUDAN

Lott Carey Family,

Kindly receive warm greetings from us in Kenya. We are once again grateful for the opportunity that the

Lord has granted us to write about His mighty workings in or lives and the lives of many in our region. We thank the Lott Carey family in the US and throughout the world for their prayer, moral and financial support.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic from March

2020- current, we don't have much in terms of church activities and events.

The government of Kenya imposed restrictions on church services and other gatherings. We will therefore highlight a few of our activities from the previous years.

A. SHORT HISTORY OF LOTT CAREY MINISTRIES IN KENYA

Lott Carey Baptist ministries commenced its work in Kenya in 1986. The late Dr. Sommerville commissioned me in 1985 and it took me six months till January 1986 to actualize the thrust of what our ministry entailed. We embarked on a school program till October 1992. When the objectives of our work changed to planting of churches.

B. THE THRUST OF OUR WORKThe primary focus of our work includes; Evangelism, Church planting, provision of medicine, widows' program, agriculture, education and advocacy.

The objective of our ministries is derived from Matthew 28 verse 18-20 as follows:

a) To promote the kingdom of God through preaching, teaching and observing all God's instruction in man's life.

b) To promote and enhance human development e.g Provision of medicine, economic empowerment through agriculture, water and relief as in—1 Thess 4:1-2.

c) To create development models in education and community work through Christian teachings—Acts 19:9-10

d) To attempt whenever possible to assist our brothers and sisters to achieve food sufficiency in agriculture.

e) To be a voice to the voiceless by promoting social justice and gender equality .

C. IMPACT OF OUR WORKIn general terms, we have witnessed tremendous progress in the lives of the people we serve. There are four visible areas that are distinct to the achievements of our ministry.

1) SpiritualThe more than 3200 members in all our 32 congregations bear testimony to the effectiveness and vibrancy of our ministry, our evangelism and Church planting ministries have borne tremendous spiritual fruit s. The dedication of the Christian to the things of God has been encouraging. Spirit filled lives are a blessing and an encouragement to all of us who are on the leadership.

2) SocialWe in the ministry here in Kenya have fully participated in conflict resolutions. The tribal clashes that occurred in Kenya in 2007 still simmers around. We have occasionally tribal flare-ups in Pokot and Turkana regions. We have not hesitated as a church to send our pastors to dissuade these communities from meaningless tribal fights. We have been effective in our arbitration effort on matters of tribalism amongst the various warring ethnic groups in Kenya. Our pastors, elders and youth leaders have rendered valuable service to the communities in various parts of Kenya.

3) EducationThough we don't run a school anymore, we have contributed our time and monies to many needy children. We have used our money from coffee proceeds to pay school fees for secondary school going students. We have also engaged ourselves in fundraising activities to enable many of our university students to complete their education. From time to time, we are invited to offer spiritual counselling to students in secondary and universities.

4) EconomicThe two-acre farm has lifted many in our neigh-borhood from depravation . From the coffee proceeds, we have managed to clear hospital bills for the sick and shut-in.

Many of our members have benefited from coffee proceeds. We sustain our sister ministry in Sor, South Sudan through the monies from our coffee. Indeed, many of our pastors and laymen get regular, minimal salaries from the proceeds.

D. CHALLENGESWe have numerous challenges in our work in Kenya. Many of our pastors have not attended formal Bible seminaries. Many are semi-illiterate. Our vision is to set-up a vocational bible institute at our Koitaburot church plot so as to give theses pastors the basic Biblical knowledge.

We are soon sending the cost of setting up the facility to the Lott Carey office. The other challenges include getting enough medicine to replenish our clinic at Kipsitet center meeting the needs of our widows and orphans.

Also, several years ago, I made a request at the convention in New Orleans and in Buffalo, New York for four motorcycles for our 4 senior pastors and 20 bicycles for our 20 assistant pastors. Several people volunteered at both conventions to purchase all these items, but unfortunately none has been fulfilled. We are still making a request for the same. Details of the cost are in the Lott Carey office. We are also soliciting your prayers for the completion of the widow's center at Kipsitet, money for digging a well at the center (detail of the cost are at the Lott Carey office). Funds to complete the semi-permanent often churches and expansion of our coffee plantation.

E. OPPORTUNITIESIn conclusion, we would like to invite supporters of Lott Carey in U.S.A. to share with us in:

1. Open air crusades–regular visits by friends from the US can be arranged by the Lott Carey office.

2. Convention in last week of August.3. Our annual women's conference in April. 4. Youth camp in December.5. Quarterly financial contributions to our

medical needs. 6. Support for orphans in school fees or school

supplies. 7. Support for our widows.8. Construction of semi-permanent churches.9. Digging of wells.10. Purchase of another 5 acres of coffee.11. Purchase of four motorcycles and 20 bicycles

for our pastors and laymen. 12. Expansion of our church work in Bor, South

Sudan.

Any person or group that wishes to do any of the above should get in touch with the LOTT CAREY office.

Faithfully submitted,Rev. Hezron K. CheruiyotSuperintendent, Lott Carey Baptist Ministries.Kenya-South Sudan

We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord for strength, good health, and life itself. It is indeed by God’s grace that we have made it thus far. The COVID-19 pandemic is at its worse presently with illnesses, infections and deaths on the rise. Yet,

because of the Lord’s mercies we are still here.

We give thanks to our benefactors through the Lott Carey Network for your prayers, your commitment, and your faithfulness even in the midst of global pandemic, as well as uncertain economic times, which enable us to fulfill our calling and mission of providing the very best equality education here in Liberia in a wholesome manner.

The focus of the Lott Carey Baptist Mission Schools (in Brewerville and Bopolu) has been over the last 113 years of existence in Liberia, and continues solidly to be: to provide quality education for academic excellence in a disciplined, safe, caring and nurturing environment. We are very proud of the rich heritage and cadre of students this institution has sent forth from its sacred walls over the years, and who are now contributing meaningfully to the

development of their communities, our nation and the world.

This year our enrollments are as follows: LCM Brewerville campus, 343 students (198 female and 147 male); and at the Bopolu Campus 243 students (99 female and 144 male).

Our core work as an educational institution (Nursery through 12th grade) is even more important now, as we march on in advancing the work of the kingdom by touching lives with transforming love through the nurturing and molding of young minds, by providing a robust and sustained quality education in Liberia. Here, at Lott Carey, our watchword is scholarship at the highest level. This is a place where we build character needed for a vibrant, productive and wholesome society. We do education with a Christian emphasis.

At LCM, there are certain core values that help shape who we are and affect our goals of how we minister throughout our community:

Spiritual emphasis is foundational. This school was built on and developed evangelization through sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. This remains front and center even as we work to affect the whole person – spiritual, academic and recreational. The spiritual emphasis is developed through daily devotions, vespers, Bible clubs, Bible teaching, being examples for the students to see, and other activities and programs which help to steer and influence their person. We also have a unique opportunity to be a witness to students who are Muslims and of other faiths.

Academic Excellence has always been a hallmark of this institution and is succinctly stated in our school’s motto, “Character, Industry, and Scholarship.” Both of our campuses (Brewerville and Bopolu) provide a very unique opportunity for students in these and surrounding communities to access and achieve the very best in academic excellence available at a very minimal or miniscule fee, compared to other institutions. Our work in Gbarpolu County over the past sixty years is an oasis through education and preaching of the gospel of Christ. The outstanding academic performance of our students transferring to other schools, coupled with the desire of our teachers to serve humanity are all testimonies of our relevance to our people and country.

The students do practical work and experiments in the laboratory. We need to upgrade our laboratories to be more functional for the benefit of our students.

Our students are utilizing our school’s library for research and reading assignments. Each class has mandatory library hours during the week. We have also initiated a reading program in the elementary division encouraging our students to check out books to read at home with their parents.

Computer education is a part of our core curriculum, offering every student from Grade 4 through Grade 12 the opportunity to become computer literate. Our goal is to have a fully functional computer lab.

Professional Development Training for our teachers is essential. We know and are convinced that once we have trained and motivated teachers who are enabled to teach, students will be excited about learning. Another core value of our institution is to continuously be enabling and facilitating the training and equipping of our teachers to be the very best. One of our goals is to ensure that LCM becomes a laboratory for teacher training, a reference point for excellence in teacher training. We endeavor to expose our teachers to the very best practices available in teaching, learning and literacy, and to relevant and current teaching methodologies, as well as the dynamics of content materials presentation in order to engender critical thinking and analysis from our students.

Lott Carey has distinguished herself as one of the very best secondary educational institutions in our country. Each year there are scores of students hoping to get enrolled in our school. We intentionally limit and control our enrollment so as not to shortchange our educational program. Our emphasis is on quality and not quantity, doing our best to maintain our class sizes in keeping with internationally acceptable standards. This engenders a better learning environment with more time for teacher-student interaction.

Our partnership with Lott Carey is very beneficial in many respects. Through this partnership, Lott Carey has maintained a significant and enviable presence here in Liberia for well over a century by building an educational institution which provides the very best quality education in a nurturing and wholesome environment. Through this partnership, scores of children and young people have been able to access

quality education at a very minimal cost to their families, and many of them have been beneficiaries of financial aid and scholarships provided by and through Lott Carey churches and families.

Our partnership is valuable in many ways. One of those is affording students the possibility to participate in spiritual emphasis week with Lott Carey members coming over to serve as speakers, counselors and motivators. This is an essential medium through which we are reaching out with the gospel of Christ to our students with an opportunity for them to make decisions to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Some of our students have been called to the gospel ministry as a result of their early exposure to the good news of Jesus Christ.

This partnership has given us a rich heritage and legacy as one of the premier Christian Mission Schools in the country over the last 113 years. Most significantly, this partnership has facilitated and enabled meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships between students, faculty, staff on the one hand, and pastors, churches, families and individual Lott Carey members. These bonds forged evolve into endearing long-term relationships.

Our main area of impact is in educating and molding the minds of children and young people as we prepare them to be excellent, brilliant students and well-rounded and productive citizens. As we develop their minds, we create a wholesome environment for character-forming and character-building. We have watched over the years as students grow from inquisitive little children into mature, critical-thinkers, innovative and creative young people who are prepared to make their mark wherever in the world they find themselves. They are in every sphere of service in our global village – social activists, environmentalists, healthcare practitioners and providers, engineers, legal luminaries, educators, to name a few. These children came to the bright flame to have their torches lit, and are going forth to brighten their corners and light up the world.

There are several mission opportunities/special projects we have on campus which individuals, families, churches, Sunday school classes for consideration and support:

Install overhead fans in classrooms – these spaces are very hot and humid during the dry and rainy seasons. There are 10 classrooms needing fans, 2 per classroom, totaling 20 fans. Each fan costs US $145.00.

Procure and install a digital projector with accessories in the school Chapel to facilitate interactive sessions with students, to be able to show videos and other educational programs, and to connect to internet and possible mission partners. Cost of Projector/accessories including speakers: US $1500.00.

Procure 8 laptop computers for Teachers’ Resource and Learning Center – giving teachers access to computers for preparation and presentation of lessons, preparing tests, upload students’ grades into the Smart School system.

Change all blackboards in all of classrooms to Whiteboards for better visibility and instruction. We have already installed whiteboards in 4 of classrooms. We need a total of 25 whiteboards. Also needed are: markers, dusters and cleaning supplies for the whiteboards. The cost of each whiteboard is US $185.00.

Always needed are sanitary supplies and hygiene kits for our students. Over the last 7 years, due to the generosity and love of our Lott Carey Global family, our schools have been the only schools to consistently distribute sanitary supplies to female students every month (about 250 girls from both campuses). We would very much appreciate the continuous provision of these essential and needed supplies. These supplies enable female students to continue with school when they are on their menses, as well as minimize infections.

Always needed are new underclothes for our students of all ages (male and female).

Other ongoing supply needs include: a variety of school and teachers supplies, copybooks, pens, pencils, calculators, backpacks/book bags, etc.

Urgently needed: Replacement of Chapel roof at Bopulu campus. The current roof is old, sagging, and musty; it has become home to thousands of bats. The entire roof needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the roof is US $8,850.00.

We are in the process of developing an agriculture farm for the purpose of teaching agricultural skills to young students, as well as providing fresh fruits and vegetables for consumption by students, their families and the community at large. This can also be a resource for providing long-term income for the institution. Partnerships and expertise as well are resources are needed to develop this agricultural farm.

Replace windows and install security bars for chapel on the main campus. Thankfully we now have a new chapel roof through the support and contribution of Rev. Emmett Dunn (Executive Secretary/Treasurer), Lott Carey family and Lott Carey Alumni Association based in the USA. The cost of this project is US $8,054.26.

Our main campus sits on 42 acres of land that needs to be maintained at all times. Our John Deere Tractor had been down now for about 3 years. We need to get this tractor fixed and operational again. Cost of needed parts and repairs for the tractor is US $4,878.26

We covet your prayerful support for the following:

For the safety, security, wellbeing and good health of all students and their families, all faculty and staff and their families, especially during this ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and these difficult times. Presently there is an upsurge in infections in the country, and our healthcare delivery system is not adequately prepared to handle this.

Pray for needed provisions to keep families fed, healthy and well, and to be able to take care of their daily needs.

For safety of students and staff as they travel back and forth to work and school daily.

Pray financial support and resources will increase so we can be able to take care of all of our needs as an institution.

For the security of our campus. Lately we have been attacked and our property has been encroached on. We are going through the courts and the legal system to have the encroachers vacate our property. We are praying for resources to completely fence in our school property once all legal hurdles have been cleared.

For resources and partners for the development of our agricultural farm, which will help us prepare for a more financially secure and sustainable future.

For short-term mission teams to come to Liberia and do VBS, sports camps, STEM camps, music camps, and Spiritual Emphasis weeks with our students.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve where God has placed us, to tend to the Lambs. Our prayer is that as we strive to be faithful in tending to the lambs entrusted to our care, by God’s help we will produce fully grown and developed sheep who are useful, productive and valuable.

Thank you to Rev. Emmett L. Dunn and the office staff for all your encouragement and support during this very difficult period. We pray God’s blessings upon you as you lead this beloved institution.

Greetings

But my faithfulness and my mercies shall be with him and in my name his horn shall be exalted. Ps. 89:24

First of all, we thank God for all of His faithfulness and mercies towards all of us, both here in Nigeria and Lott Carey World-Wide. We, here in Nigeria, greet all Lott Carey family members worldwide, and we thank God for what He is doing though “our hands and feet”

to enhance and expand His Kingdom here on earth. He has truly “done us well. May His name be forever praised, in Jesus Name.

Context of Our Service Lott Carey has established its name in three states of the south-south region of Nigeria: Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers State. We are also now in northeast of Nigeria, around the middle belt region of Taraba State. Here our focus has concentrated on rural areas where the need for assistance is most. Most of the people in these areas are petty traders and subsistent farmers.

Ministry Focus The proper reasons for establishing the Mission was to establish, and finance. Sound Christian programs throughout the numerous areas of Nigeria so as to conduct some Christian education programmes which will result in the better understanding of the content meaning and benefits of the Holy Scriptures.

Sound educational programs that will increase their expectation of acquiring useful and life-enhancing

knowledge and skills which will give them opportunities for a better standard of life.

With this in mind, Lott Carey has pursued its aspirations by establishing over 80 churches and 6 primary/secondary schools.

Importance and Impact of School Programs Lott Carey – Nigeria has purposefully targeted the rural areas for its programs. Our educational institutions are tuition “friendly” to enable parents give their children quality education. The Mission subsidizes every child’s tuition by 40%. In addition to this the schools offers parents different kinds of incentives to ensure that no child is “left behind” at home.

The schools in mention are: The Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School, Afaha Obio Eno, Ibiono Local Government Area. Established 1964; now taken over by government. Classes: Grades 6-12 Students: 780 Staff: 35

The Lott Carey Baptist Secondary School, Etuk Uruk Eshiet Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. Established 1975; now taken over by government. Classes: Grades 6 -12 Students: 780

Lott Carey Baptist Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Efre Itak, Ikono Local Government Area. Established 1987. Classes: Kindergarten to Grade 12 Students: 260 Staff: 25

Lott Carey Baptist Academy. Ikot Ebom Itam, Itu Local Government Area. Established 1988. Classes: Grades 6-11 Students: 380 Staff: 22

Lott Carey Baptist Academy, Calabar, Cross River State. Established 1996. Classes: Kindergarten - Grade 9 Students: 302 Staff: 20

Lott Carey Baptist Academy, Orida, Mbiase Local Government Area, Cross River State. Established 2013. Classes: Kindergarten - Grade 12 Students: 200 Staff: 15

The Importance and Impact Resulting in Our Partnership with Parent BodyWithout the partnership of the Home Mission, most of our intensive capital projects accomplished in the Nigeria Mission would have been problematic, or not possible at all.

Evangelical Ministries Impact Over the past year, because of this assistance, Lott Carey Nigeria has been able to assist 10 churches with their renovation projects:

Educational Ministries i. Scholarship scheme for our students

• The tuition fees of all of our students are subsidized by 40% to enable “the least of these” to acquire a well-rounded quality primary and secondary school education.

• Secondly, our “Bring 3, 1 free” scholarship scheme has encouraged a lot of parents.

If a parent registers 3 children in any of our schools, the third child will be entitled to tuition-free education as long as he or she can keep their grades at a “B” level.

ii. Impact of Schools on Host Communities Wherever our schools have been sited, there has been increased economic activities; such as the opening of small shops and construction of small studio type apartments for rentals. Also, the schools provide employment for the community i.e. security personnel, gardened, cleanup screw, teaching staff and classroom assistants.

iii. Women in Service Everywhere – Women Micro-loan Scheme The W.I.S.E. women empowerment scheme is ongoing. An additional 20 women have become beneficiaries of the no-interest, micro-credit loan scheme this year. This is really helping our women with their businesses. Most of them are using the funds to increase their purchasing power to stock their market items. Some of them are trading agricultural products such as palm oil, palm fruits and even the palm fruit kennels. Some have used the loans to expand their small “house front” food item stores. This has been one of the most impactful blessings this mission has ever experienced. Most of the women are faithfully redeeming their monthly payments and are applying for even more loans.

iv. Pastoral Continuous Education Scholarship Scheme Presently, we are also assisting 2 of our pastors with their post graduate studies.

v. Water-Well at the Lott Carey Baptist Academy in Orida, Biase. Cross River State.

We would like, first of all, to express our gratitude for the provision of the $3,500 grant for drilling of a water well in our school. The source of their water was from shallow, hand- dug wells. which was very unclean, and some distance from the school. The well has been drilled; the water is running, and a three-tap stand has been provided for the community. Presently, the water tank stand is being constructed. We are going to visit the area in June and officially dedicate their water project. So far, the community is jubilating with appreciation for the provision of this fresh-water-well. Because of this, a concerned member of the community donated a 35 liters water tank to the project.

vi. COVID-19 Impact Despite the different predictions of the probable COVID-19 pandemic for Africa, we must announce God has really been faithful to us. Nigeria has not been affected as was thought. The Government put some harsh restrictions during the initial stages of the pandemic. There were total shut-down and stay-at-home directives which were adhered to.

We thank God that nobody in our system has been a victim of the pandemic. We can’t explain this, but all glory is given to God. Our hospitals here are not even equipped for the basic health care delivery, not to speak about a pandemic.

Despite this, the basic guidelines of spacing and mask wearing are still in effect. Basically, COVID-19 has not affected this area at all. Even so, there were interstate travel restrictions. Global restriction of travel and trade resulted in low supply of goods, which has caused increases in prices of all market items. The price has gone up above 100% in some areas of the country. The price hike of food and other items has been the only impacted negative impact that is affecting everybody.

Areas of Concern for Nigeria: Prayer PointsFor the first time since the mid-sixties Nigeria is on the edge of civil-war. The level of insecurity because of the agitations from different militant groups in Nigeria is making life difficultly unbearable. Almost every geographical area now has its militants with their unreasonable demands on the government. Unfortunately, men and women of our security forces are being targeted by these militant groups. Different groups are also targeting different geographical areas making life very unsettling.

As a result, we are appealing that

i. You pray for the peace of Nigeria.

ii. Pray for the President, who seemingly has lost control of the country.

iii. Pray for our state, the Akwa Ibom State. Lately police stations and personnel have been attacked; some stations even burnt down.

iv. Pray for safety of our pastors as they travel around fulfilling their calling.

v. Pray for our schools, that God hide them under His swings. Lately students are being abducted from schools for financial ransom.

vi. Pray that God keeps our children out of the minds of these people who are also attacking churches and their clergy.

AppreciationThrough it all, COVID-19 disruption, economic hardship and the apparent rise of violence and insecurity in the country, we still want to thank God for what He is doing in our Mission, here in Nigeria. We want to appreciate and thank all the churches and persons who have continued to be Lott Carey’s destiny helpers; who, despite the global unsettling health situation, continue to be faithful to the call to reach out across the USA, and the world. We say thank you, and may God reward you accordingly. We also want to express our appreciation to the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention executives for their unrelated efforts to ensure Lott Carey fulfills its calling, despite the national and global situation. Our prayer is that God keep every member of Lott Carey family safe and sound.

May God bless all of us as we continue to serve Him in Jesus Name, Amen.

2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT 31

SOUTH AFRICA

Greetings in the most wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It gives us great pleasure to provide you the aforementioned report as per guidelines provided.

IntroductionA. Context which birthed the ministry

The ministry initially started out as an outreach program in communities severely affected by gangs and drug abuse. With the escalation of these problems, and the refusal of churches to receive those who made commitments to Christ, we felt led by the Spirit of God to plant a church to accommodate these and others.

B. How has the ministry evolved? The ministry has evolved tremendously over the last 15 years, especially since our partnership with Lott Carey, which led to development of relationship with Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, PA, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller. Ever since this partnership began, we have grown by leaps and bounds, expanding both as service to others, as well as to other locations and countries beyond our South African borders.

Importance of your ministryTeen Challenge South Africa and Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church have become household names in many communities where we are located, as well as several countries on the continent of Africa. The value we add is significant. The Bishops Council of the Anglican Church in the Cape Town region requested Rev. Nomdoe present to their Annual Lecture series the reason why a “small” church like ours has so much impact and influence in society.

Notwithstanding these impacts, the most important one is evidenced in the many families and individuals who are helped by the family restoration program. Additionally, our church became a beacon of Hope, serving and supporting the community 24/7, during this time of distress caused by COVID-19.

With the devastation of COVID-19, we faced additional challenges, especially the homeless situation. We responded to the challenge and served homeless people by opening our facilities to accommodate them on a short-term basis. Through the grace of God, 121 persons have been assisted, and several are now functioning and productive citizens of society, and a number have been reconciled with their families.

Importance of your partnership with Lott CareyThe partnership between our ministry and Lott Carey is pivotal in this critical hour because we are enabled to serve in the global village, meeting the desperate needs of people. This partnership helps us share our Christian witness in a meaningful way. One of the ways we do this is to provide food and health care supplies to needy people.

From June 2020 to June 2021we distributed 1800 food hampers for a family of 6, three meals per day for 6 days. Additionally, over 1,800,000 cooked meals were served from 12 different locations. In total, 2,505,600 cooked meals were served. We also provided over 5000 face masks, sanitizers, and other health products.

Ministry ImpactThe primary focus of the ministry is to provide residential rehabilitation services for men and women who succumbed to substance abuse. With the escalation of this problem and more people who require services, we’ve embarked on the development of a community-based rehabilitation program under the banner of HOPE REVOLUTION.

Even in the midst of the limitations of current circumstances related to COVID-19 pandemic, the Lord enabled us to serve our communities in many ways and the impacts are visible.

Community Outreaches: 4026. Primary School: 1108. Community-based Rehabilitation: 197.

Special Project Interest The Lord continues to open new doors of ministry opportunities across the continent of Africa. We currently have needs for individuals who will join our team to establish and develop the Hope Revolution program across South Africa and the continent.

The critical skills we desperately need are: Development Director, Social Workers, Counselors, Facilitators, Volunteers, Churches, and Church and Business partnerships.

The need is great for churches to come alongside and adopt a nation. This will enable us to accelerate our services in the 34 nations with which we have established relationships. We currently have a desperate need to establish and develop sustainability projects.

Skills development and training remain a concern on the Continent. We have an opportunity to develop the current accredited Community College in Cape Town into a flagship training institute that will serve multiple purposes. We seek investors/partners to enable us to complete this project.

Additional opportunities are arising in other countries for investment, particularly Seychelles for Solar Energy, and Ghana with multiple business opportunities.

Prayer PartnershipWe will be grateful if our Lott Carey family can join us in prayer for a breakthrough in the current violence in South Africa as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. We also need prayer for our staff and students in our programs. Pray that God will provide more facilities to accommodate women, and women and children.

ConclusionOn behalf of the entire ministry family here, we thank our Lott Carey family for your continued prayers and support. We are forever grateful for Rev. Dr. Waller, and the Enon Tabernacle Baptists Church for their faith in us and their faithful support. Without you we could not do what we are currently doing. We pray abundant blessings of God upon each of your lives, family and ministries.

ZIMBABWE

Greetings

Zimbabwe Theological Seminary and African Baptist Family in Zimbabwe extend warm greetings to the Lott Carey Family. We hope all is well with you.

We thank the Lott Carey family for the ceaseless support you always render

Zimbabwe Theological Seminary and African Baptist ministry in Zimbabwe. It is because of you, friends in Christ, our mission is made possible. Today we are proud of who we are as Zimbabwe Theological Seminary and African Baptist Ministry in Zimbabwe. Had it not been your support, perhaps our ministry would not have gone this far.

On a joyful note, we are inviting the Lott Carey Family to celebrate with us on our 10th anniversary as Zimbabwe Theological Seminary. The seminary opened its doors to its first students on September 12, 2011. Some Southern Baptist missionaries gave us only three months to survive, but thank God we have now survived 10 years and we are not looking back. We thank the Lott Carey Family for its unwavering support during these trying years. The anniversary will be celebrated on September 12, 2021.

Introduction a. The Context that gave birth to Zimbabwe

Theological SeminaryZimbabwe Theological Seminary came to being as a result of the need to address a context characterised by the marginalization of women, ignorance, dictatorship tendencies, corruption, violence, poverty, oppression and poor theological education.

In some Christian denominations in Zimbabwe, women were and are being patronised. They are not recognised in faculty, administrative and key church leadership positions, such as pastorates. In this understanding, women were not allowed to go beyond the general certificate of education.

Moreover, many pastors were/are receiving poor if not shallow theological education, which was not balanced both academically and spiritually. Because of poverty, they could not afford sound theological education. The results are not a reflection of their abilities, but a reflection of their poverty- stricken backgrounds.

b. The similarity of the ministry to the original oneThe current ministry of Zimbabwe Theological Seminary is similar to its original ministry in that it is a Christian institution, whose primary purpose is to equip God-called men and women of Zimbabwe and the region for effective Christian ministries, particularly in churches and society in general. The Zimbabwe Theological Seminary provides Christ-centered, biblically-based, multifaceted, contextually relevant theological education. In doing this, it seeks to give a balanced emphasis to the acquisition of knowledge, development of skills, and growth in spiritual maturity and leadership

The Importance of this Ministry to the Christian Witness TodayZimbabwe Theological Seminary is important to the Christian witness today because it develops students with spiritual, intellectual and practical-skilled hands for empowering churches in particular, and society in general. The current situation in Zimbabwe makes our ministry even more important.

The Importance of our Partnership with Global Lott Carey FamilyOur partnership in the Global Lott Carey Family is important because the primary focus and mission of Zimbabwe Theological Seminary is met and is similar to the Lott Carey family. Lott Carey empowers us to offer theological education in a way that is fitting to our own context without dictating to us. Our Lott Carey family has enhanced our dignity and our ministry in Zimbabwe.

The global Lott Carey family also opens doors for interaction with others around the globe. In this way, ZTS becomes a family within the bigger Lott Carey family. We therefore receive and send various forms of support from everywhere. God bless the Lott Carey Family!

Main Areas of Ministry and How People are Impacted

a) The main areas of ministry impact • Theological Education to the poor and

marginalizedZimbabwe Theological Seminary provides Theological Education to poorest of the poor. Zimbabwe is undergoing serious economic meltdown with inflation running over 800%.

• Evangelism and Church Planting NeedsIn areas of evangelism we have reached remote areas such as Zaka (Masvingo Province), Mberengwa, and Chiundura (Midlands Province) among others. We are also impacted towns such as Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Kadoma (Mashonaland West Province), and Gweru, etc. We have now engaged a HOME MISSIONARY who is evangelising and planting new churches in the Kadoma-Sanyathi-Chegutu areas. So far he has planted THREE FELLOWSHIPS.

• Professional NeedsOur ministry supplies various ministries with service providers in different areas. For example, we provide teachers to Ministry of Education, both primary and secondary. Lecturers from ZTS are active in Ministry of Higher Learning and Tertiary Education. Chaplains serve in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Defence and Health. ZTS-trained social workers serve in the Ministry of Social and Child Welfare. Non-Governmental Organizations are served by our development officers. Ministry of Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs are impacted through National Healing and Counsellors. Many churches are also benefiting from our ministry of theological education as Anglican priests, Church of Christ pastors and other indigenous denominations are trained at our institution.

b) How many people are impactedThe education that we give has impacted and changed the lives of many of our students and their families and the community at large.

i. Women are impactedii. The Whole Zimbabwean community

is impacted iii. Churches are impactediv. The Marginalised/Disadvantaged/

less privileged are impactedv. Prisoners are impactedvi. Uniformed forces are impacted

Opportunities Currently Existing for Special Project Partnership If opportunities present, we look forward to partnering in the Purchasing of Land and Construction of our own Seminary Premises. Owning our own premises is our greatest priority now. Currently we have signed a MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT with Tongogara Rural District council for land to construct a High School. Once this High School is operational, it will support the Seminary. We need prayers and finances to support us in achieving this great vision.

Lott Carey Partners in PrayersThe Lott Carey Partners may join us in prayer on the following:

The need for our own premises A lot of funds are being used for rental fees for the facilities we currently use. Pray for God’s intervention and provision of funds for buying land and for the construction of our own Seminary.

High school project Pray for God’s intervention and provision of funds for the construction of the High School which will go a long way in supporting the Seminary.

The evangelistic drive We ask prayers for the Seminary’s evangelistic drive to be able to reach almost everywhere, particularly, the remote areas of our country. The one vehicle we have as a Seminary does not suffice for this great outreach and is broken. A good vehicle(s) will go a long way in assisting in this regard. We need prayers and financial support for our Home Missionary Ministry.

Advertising the Seminary is a challenge. Pray for us to reach some places and people so that they get to know more about the theological education we offer. Areas where there is less trafficking of theological educators such as Binga- along the Zambezi valley, in Mashonaland North Province, Mberengwa, Zaka and others are our priority.

Scholarships We need your prayers and financial support for students who are not able to pay for their fees, though they feel called to ministry.
