Parents & Students
Our goal at Union County High School is to ensure that each student is
College and Career Ready upon graduation. This course guide provides a
wealth of information and serves as an orientation to you and your student.
Students will have an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) meeting with their
counselor each year of their high school career. The purpose of these
meetings is to prepare students’ future schedules based on their past
achievements and their post-secondary goals. Every decision made will
affect your student’s future. We highly encourage students to be proactive
in requesting courses during their IGP meetings.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Union County High School operates on a four block schedule unless special
permission is granted by the superintendent or the superintendent’s designee.
COURSES AND SCHEDULES
Seniors must take a minimum of two classes per semester unless they’re taking dual
enrollment courses then they’re able to take one class at UCHS.
Juniors that are taking dual enrollment courses must take at least two classes at UCHS.
All courses are open to students of both sexes.
Administrators/Counselors will assign classes for students who fail to complete the
registration process.
Due to conflicts, there is no guarantee that all courses requested can be scheduled.
COURSE REGISTRATION
Course registration and student advisement begins in September and ends in early February for
rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. During this time, counselors will review the student’s transcript,
Individual Graduation Plan (IGP), appropriate tests, and the courses selected by the student and
his/her parents. Students and parents should use good judgement when selecting courses.
DROP DATES
Pursuant to the South Carolina Department of Education regulation, R43-234 “Defined Program,
Grades 9-12 and Graduation Requirements,” students must meet the minimum requirements for the
awarding of credit. Students that wish to drop a semester class within 5 days of enrollment or drop a
quarter class within 3 days of enrollment can do so without penalty.
Students who withdraw from a course after the specified time of 3 days or 5 days shall be assigned a
“WF/50” and the “WF/50” must be calculated into the student’s overall grade point average.
RETAKING COURSES
“Any student may retake a course at the same level of difficulty if the student has earned a D, P, NP,
WP, FA, WF, or an F in that course. If the same level course is not accessible, the course may be
retaken at a different level of rigor.”

NCAA REQUIREMENTS
Students wishing to play Division I or Division II collegiate sports must apply online to the
NCAA Clearinghouse. Eligibility for collegiate sports requires 16 core course credits for both
Division I and Division II. The breakdown of core course credits may be checked online. The
minimum grade point average for eligibility is 2.3 in the core classes. Once the student begins the
seventh semester, they may not repeat or replace any of those 10 courses to improve the core course
GPA. The minimum SAT score is 820 or minimum ACT sum score of 68. The SAT combined score is
based on the Verbal and Math sections only. The ACT score used for NCAA purposes is a sum of
the following four sections: English, mathematics, reading and science. For more information
regarding eligibility, please visit www.ncaa.org. Click on the “Academics” and then “becoming
eligible” or you may call NCAA toll-free at 877-262-1492.
