    2020-21 MICHIGAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL JAN. 21 -- AT #17 OHIO STATE

Last Time OutThe No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team tied a program-best 10-game win streak behind a career-best 21 points from sophomore Maddie Nolan in a 69-40 win over Wisconsin on Thurs-day night (Jan. 14) at the Kohl Center.

The Wolverines also on their best start in program his-tory, improving to 10-0 overall on the season. Michi-gan's 5-0 start to conference play is also tops for the program.

Nolan topped her previous career best of 13 points in the first half, scoring 14 of her 21 in the first 20 min-utes of play, while knocking down a career-high five three-pointers. Junior Naz Hillmon battled the dou-ble-team all night, as she dished out a career-high sev-en assists and pulled down 15 rebounds.

Senior Akienreh Johnson notched her fourth career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Amy Dilk had eight points and seven assists.

The Wolverine defense forced Wisconsin (3-7, 0-7 Big Ten) into 18 turnovers, which turned into 14 points, while scoring 30 points in the paint and seven sec-ond-chance points. U-M allowed a season-low 40 points in the win.

U-M used three three-pointers, two of which game from Nolan in the first four minutes of the game to take a 9-2 early advantage. Following the triples, Michigan went on a 12-0 run and kept Wisconsin 0-for-5 from the field to take an 18-2 advantage and force a Badger timeout with 5:09 left in the first quarter. Despite not scoring for more than two minutes at the end of the quarter, the Wolverines held a 23-11 lead heading into the second 10 minutes of play.

Nolan continued to be a sharpshooter from long-range, dropping her fourth three-pointer of the game off a pass from Hillmon with 8:02 remaining in the half and giving Michigan a 26-11 lead. The Michigan defense was a huge part of the Wolverine success in the second quarter, forcing five turnovers and going on a 9-0 run to head to the locker room with a 37-17 advantage.

The U-M defense continued to stifle the Wisconsin of-fense as the Badgers committed four turnovers in the first five minutes of the third quarter and made just one shot from the field, and the Wolverines extended their lead to 52-28 with two minutes left in the frame.

As Wisconsin double-teamed Hillmon, she made a per-fect back-door pass to Johnson, for a wide-open layup and put Michigan up, 57-32, with 8:06 remaining and caused the Badgers to use a timeout after U-M scored the first five points of the final period. Hillmon contin-ued to work through the double-team and fed Johnson again to extend the Wolverine advantage to 30 points, 64-34, with under five minutes to play.

U-M cruised through the final five minutes to notch the road victory.

Best Start EverThe Wolverines are out to a 10-0 start for the first time in program history. U-M previously started a program-best 7-0 during the 1999-2000, 2011-12 and 2015-16 seasons, with the last 7-0 season coming un-der ninth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico. Michi-gan's 10-game winning streak is also tied for the lon-gest in program history. U-M also rattled off 10 straight during the 2001-02 and 2012-13 seasons.

Starting off Strong in B1G ActionMichigan is off to a 5-0 start in Big Ten action for the first time in school history, with the previous best com-ing at 4-0 during the 2012-13 season. Michigan and Maryland are the two remaining unbeaten teams in conference play.

Up To No. 11Michigan moved up to No. 11 in this week's Associated Press poll with 443 points, the highest ranking in the AP poll for Michigan in program history. The previous high was No. 12, which happened Dec. 24, 2001 - be-fore freshmen Elise Stuck and Meghan Fiso were even born. The No. 11 ranking is the highest team ranking for a Kim Barnes Arico-coached team. KBA coached the Wolverines when they were ranked No. 13 in 2018 and also was at St. John's when the Red Storm was ranked No. 13 on March 5, 2012. U-M also came in at No. 11 in this week USA Today Coaches Poll.

Defense Steps UpMichigan allowed a season-low 40 points to Wisconsin in its 29-point win in Madison last week (Jan. 14). It was also the fewest surrendered by the Wolverines in a reg-ular-season conference game since a 74-40 win against Minnesota on Feb. 7, 2010. Michigan leads the Big Ten in three-point field goal percentage defense (.230), while ranking second in field goal percentage defense (.349) and third in scoring defense (58.0 ppg).

Keeping It CloseMichigan and Ohio State have played some close games since the 2009-10 season. Only two of the last 19 games between Ohio State and Michigan have had a margin larger than 11: a 64-49 U-M win in Columbus on Jan. 5, 2014, and a 64-51 Michigan win at Crisler on Dec. 30, 2010. The last nine games between the two ri-vals have each been decided by single digits. The last nine games have been decided by a total of 58 points (6.4 points per game). Michigan has four wins over Ohio State since Kim Barnes Arico took over in 2012-13, accounting for 30 percent of U-M’s 13 all-time wins against the Buckeyes.

In addition to playing at Ohio State during their time as Wolverines, both players played on high school teams that reached the state championship game, held at Value City Arena. game. Thursday's game is the only game on the 2020-21 schedule to be played in Ohio.

30-20 For NazJunior Naz Hillmon set a new standard in her career in Michigan's two-point win over Nebras-ka (Jan. 7), turning in a career-best 35 points and 22 rebounds. It was the second 30-20 game in Michigan history, as she joined Abby Currier, who scored 33 points and had 20 rebounds against No-tre Dame on Jan. 20, 1979, in the Michigan 30-20 club. Hillmon's achievement also was the first 30-20 game by a Big Ten student-athlete since Jan. 24, 2016 and the second nationally by a student-ath-lete this season.

Hillmon's feat was the fourth 20-point, 20-re-bound Michigan performance and first since Cye-sha Goree against Minnesota on Feb. 21, 2015. Hillmon is just the sixth Wolverine to grab at least 20 rebounds in a single game, with her 22 boards ranking second in U-M game history.

Maddie Stays ReadySophomore Maddie Nolan is one of the more versatile Wolverines on this year's team. She start-ed the final 11 games of last season but moved back to the bench with the arrival of Leigha Brown. Nolan has continued her impressive play from late last season, averaging 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game. She poured in a career-high 21 points, the first 20-point game of her career, in Michigan's win at Wisconsin (Jan. 14). Nolan made 5-for-11 three-pointers in the game, becoming the 21st Wolverine in school history to hit at least five in a game. She has ap-peared in eight games this season, starting twice.

Effective and Efficient on OffenseThrough 10 games, Michigan is averaging 81.8 points per game (18th nationally) on 48.6 percent shooting (10th nationally). In its season opener, U-M shot 61.7 percent from the floor - its highest shooting percentage since making hitting 66.0 percent from the floor against Wake Forest on Dec. 1, 2010. U-M topped the 60-percent mark for the second time this season after shooting 63.0 per-cent from the field at then-No. 15 Northwestern (Jan. 3), the highest mark by the Wolverines under ninth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico. Michi-gan is 74-6 in nine seasons under KBA when shoot-ing at least 50 percent from the floor. U-M has topped the 50 percent mark five times this season, going 5-0 in those contests.

Scouting #17 Ohio StateNo. 17 Ohio State (7-1, 3-1 B1G) is coming off its first loss of the season, dropping a 63-55 contest at Nebraska on Saturday (Dec. 16). OSU is averag-ing 85.5 points per game on 47.0 percent shooting while allowing 61.4 points per contest on 34.7 per-cent shooting. The Buckeyes feature a quintet of double-figure scorers in Jacy Sheldon (17.4 ppg), Dorka Juhasz (16.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg), Madison Greene (13.9 ppg), Aaliyah Patty (11.9 ppg) and Braxtin Miller (10.7 ppg). OSU took both games against Michigan last season, coming in Columbus and at the Big Ten Tournament.

Getting on the GlassMichigan has been effective on the glass, outre-bounding its opponents in all but two games this

season. U-M is sixth nationally and leads the Big Ten in rebounding margin at +14.9. U-M also leads the conference in rebounding offense (45.8) and rebounding defense (30.9). Michigan has grabbed at least 50 rebounds in three games this season. U-M has three players grabbing at least five boards a game in Big Ten-leading Naz Hillmon (11.9 rpg), Amy Dilk (5.7 rpg) and Akienreh Johnson (5.8 rpg). In addition, Maddie Nolan is going for 4.6 boards per contest.

Naz Named Player of the WeekJunior Naz Hillmon won the Big Ten, ESPN and USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week awards (Jan. 11) after recording a pair of double-doubles in Michigan's two wins. In the two-point win over Nebraska (Jan. 7), Hillmon re-corded the second 30-20 game in program history with a career bests of 35 points and 22 rebounds. It was the second 30-20 game nationally this sea-son and the first by a Big Ten student-athlete since Jan. 24, 2016. She followed that up with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance in U-M's 20-point win over Illinois (Jan. 10). For the week, she averaged 29.5 points and 17.5 rebounds per game. Hillmon leads the Big Ten in double-doubles with seven on the season. It was the third Big Ten weekly honor of her career and the second time she had been selected by ESPN.

Sharing the BallMichigan has been sharing the ball this season, averaging 17.9 helpers per game to rank 13th na-tionally and fifth in the Big Ten. Junior Amy Dilk leads the way for Michigan, averaging 4.8 dimes per game. She is up to 330 career assists, ranking ninth all-time at Michigan.

Hailey Hits the Century MarkSenior Hailey Brown started the 100th game of her career in Michigan's two-point win over Ne-braska (Jan. 7). Brown became the 14th Wolverine in program history to start 100 contests and the first to do it since Hallie Thome. She has scored in double figures five times this season and is aver-aging 9.1 points and 4.5 boards per game. For her career, she has hit 124 triples and needs 10 more to move into the top 10 in Michigan history. The Canadian is up to 875 career points, needing 125 more to become Michigan's 30th 1,000-point scor-er.

Naz Doing Naz ThingsWith a double-double in her first game of the sea-son, Naz Hillmon has become the ninth player in program history to record 20 career double-dou-bles. Hillmon is up to seven on the season through nine games to lead the Big Ten and rank third na-tionally. She has cracked the top 10 in program history in double-doubles and now is in a tie for fourth.
