The great automotive innovator and cor-porate CEO, Lee Iacocca once said, “There is no substitute for accurate knowledge. Know yourself, know your

business, know your [team.]” Iacocca was not alone in his opinion. Nearly 2500 years earlier, the ancient Chinese strat-egist and philosopher, Sun Tzu, had written the words, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War" is considered required reading by many Fortune 500 execu-tives. This got me thinking about our Lodge and the needs of our members. How well do we know each other on a broad scale? What percentage of our Lodge are RVers? What do you like most about our Lodge? What do you like least? What are you looking forward to the most once our current restrictions have ended? Wouldn’t you like to know? I would! For that reason, I have taken the time to create a simple sur-vey that should take you about two minutes to complete. The survey is not anonymous, but it is private. The reason it is not anonymous is that, as the ER of the Lodge, I would like the opportunity to reach out to you and respond to any sug-gestions, concerns or questions you may have. In short, your responses are very important to me. The survey will be sent out as an email, the first week of Au-gust, and you will be able to reply directly from the email. The survey form is digital; therefore it will not be mailed using standard mail service. When you receive the email, please reply right away… it should only take about two minutes to complete. I will be sharing the overall (anonymized) results in an up-coming newsletter so we can all learn about our Lodge. I’m guessing we will discover things about ourselves that we did not know. I'm actually quite excited to see the many respons-es and how our discoveries will guide us moving forward. Thank you in advance for your participation. Warm Regards, ER David

Last month we learned that, with nearly 800,000 members and nearly 1,900 Lodges nationwide, Elks provide charitable services that help build stronger communities across the United States. The Elks National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, helps Elks build stronger communities through programs that support youth, serve vet-erans, and meet needs in areas where Elks live and work (elks.org/enf).

One could think of the ENF as a six-spoked wheel, with the ENF as the hub, each of its sup-ported programs as a spoke, and the local lodges as the rim. None of them work ef-fectively without the other. This

month we look briefly at each of the six spokes and how our collective giving to the ENF sup-ports each program.

Hoop Shoot Program

The Elks have been developing true grit in kids through the Hoop Shoot program for nearly 50 years. For 2020-21, the Elks National Founda-tion allocated $1.2 million to fund the program.

Drug Awareness Program

Through the Elks National Drug Awareness Program, youth learn the importance of making healthy choices. For 2020-21, the Elks National Foundation allocated $1 million to fund the Drug Awareness Program, which includes a nation-wide speaking tour.

Veterans Service Commission

The Elks National Foundation ensures our vet-erans are never forgotten. In 2020-21, the ENF

granted $3.6 million to meet the needs of veter-ans through the Elks National Veterans Service Commission, including $1.3 million to help end veteran homelessness.

Elks National Foundation Lodge Grants

The Elks National Foundation allocated $14.6 million this year to fund the Community Invest-ments Program. Lodges meet local needs through grants that offer Elks opportunities to serve their community in ways that will raise the Lodge’s profile, energize the membership, en-courage former members to return to the fold, and gain the notice of people who want to be part of an organization that’s doing great things.

State Grants

In 2020-21, the Elks National Foundation will grant $10.1 million to state Elks associations. These grants help fund each state’s major char-itable projects.

Scholarships

In 2020-21, the Elks National Foundation will award $4.6 million in college scholarships, en-suring a bright future for our nation’s youth. As important members of the Elks family, Elks scholars have many social and service opportu-nities to connect with the Elks and one another.

In future articles, we will discover more about each program and how our lodge utilizes them to effect positive change for, and in, our com-munity.

There is a saying, “The bigger the challenge, the bigger the opportunity for growth.” As we enter the second half of a challenging year, we would like to present you with an opportunity for growth… growth that will support our community, encourage our Lodge members, and growth that will benefit our children with developmental issues. Here it is: The Purple Pig Coin-A-Day Challenge

1. Come by the Lodge and pick up a Purple Pig Piggy Bank

2. Drop a coin a day into the piggy bank 3. Keep it going every day through December 31,

2020. When your pig gets full, just bring it by the Lodge with your name and member number in it. Be sure to pick

up a new pig at the same time! You can also accumulate the coins in a jar and bring them by the Lodge office for Purple Pig. Or simply call the Lodge office to contribute using a credit card. Even in a year as difficult as 2020, we have so much to be thankful for. Give thanks in a tangible way, a-coin-a-day for the Purple Pig Charities. Our donations for the month of July totaled $604.47 and we cannot thank you all enough for your contributions! The winner of the 2 tickets for lunch at the Elks Club is Hugh McKinney!!! Thank you so much and you may pick up your certificates at the office. Thank you in advance, The Purple Pig Committee

The Benevolence of Bingo

In keeping with the Elks benevolent nature, Bin-

go night is NOT just an evening of fun and

games, it is a major fundraiser for our lodge! All

the “profits” from Bingo are restricted funds and

can only be distributed to charities designated by

our Board of Trustees. So, when Bingo night

opens again, please, come join the fun and help

your community at the same time.

This past year the funds went to several worthy

organizations:

$2,500 to Women’s First Step House North

County – This special organization provides a

safe affordable environment for women recover-

ing from addiction, giving these women a second

chance at life.

$2,000 to Veterans Stand Down – This is a fast

paced and successful program to help homeless

veterans navigate through necessary services to

regain their place in the community! Last year,

they successfully placed 30 veterans off the

streets and into bridge or permanent housing!

They also provide needed emergency services

such as food and clothing and health screening

for veterans.

$1,000 to REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship

Program – This non-profit therapeutic horse-

manship program is located in Fallbrook, CA.

Children and adults with disabilities learn how to

ride horses and have fun doing it. While on a

moving horse, a rider experiences rhythmic

movement similar to the human gait. This acti-

vates the part of the brain that controls move-

ment, which helps the rider develop better bal-

ance and increased strength. I was fortunate

enough to deliver our donation check to

REINS and meet some of the horses and pro-

gram leaders. It was an amazing place.

$2,000 County of San Diego Sheriff Depart-

ment K9 Division – This unit is responsible for

the training of Search and Rescue canines. It is

estimated that a single dog team can be as ef-

fective as 20 to 30 trained human searchers in

locating a missing person in a given time frame.

So, to all the Bingo players, thank you for com-

ing and playing Bingo at our Lodge! You ena-

bled the Vista Elks Lodge to give a total of

$7,500 to worthy local charities this past year.

Also, to all the volunteers that work at Bingo, a

hearty thank you to each one of you from our

homeless veterans, recovering women, disabled

adults and children and all the families helped by

K-9 rescue dogs.

With Bingo...it is a win-win! Players have fun

while helping those in need.

Thank you!

Joyce Ford, Treasurer

Renovation Committee Progress continues to be made to the front parking lot. Large telephone poles have been positioned to help bring order to the parking area and to hopefully prevent people from coming on the property and doing donuts in the gravel. Another safety feature added to the lot is the blacktop apron that will keep the gravel back and pre-vent skidding as members enter and exit the driveway. The potholes at the entrance of the driveway were also patched. Lookin’ good!
