Sara H. Goza, M.D., FAAP, is president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). She began her one-year term on Jan. 1, 2020. Dr. Goza is a general pediatrician and has had the privilege of taking care of children in her hometown of Fayetteville, Georgia, for more than 30 years. She is a managing

partner in First Georgia Physician Group and a member of the Community Physicians Advisory Board for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dr. Goza earned her medical degree from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. She completed her internship and residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio. She has been involved with the AAP Georgia chapter for more than 20 years, including serving on the board of directors, Medicaid Task Force and as chapter president. She currently is on the legislative committee, fall planning group and board of the Pediatric Foundation of Georgia. Dr. Goza was involved in the AAP’s Hub and Spoke quality improvement initiative and the development of its current strategic plan, and represented the AAP at the Council of Medical Specialty Societies.

Dr. Goza is active in the Fayetteville community, having served on the boards for Girl Scouts; Promise Place, which provides domestic violence services; and The Joseph Sams School for children with special needs.

With the combined efforts of Norton Children‘s and the University of Louisville School of Medicine, this symposium provides opportunities for outstanding continuing education and renewing the professional ties that bind our medical staffs locally and regionally.

Our Planning Committee has selected a variety of topics to meet the educational needs and practice challenges expressed by you and your peers. Content has been selected for its relevancy and timeliness for implementing into your practice. The symposium is designed to complement the content provided at the annual meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This program demonstrates our collective dedication to excellence in lifelong learning and the ongoing pursuit of providing the highest-quality health care. Target audience, goal and statement of needThe goal of this activity is to bring together physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents, students and other pediatric health care professionals to enhance competence, performance and patients’ outcomes. Topics and speakers have been determined based on an analysis of physicians’ needs, current practice issues highlighting newly available medicines and technologies, and gaps our Planning Committee has determined to be important to today’s practice challenges. Further, needs have been correlated with the maintenance of certification requirements and competency areas outlined by the American Board of Medical Specialties and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

This program will provide clinical updates on a variety of topics that commonly are seen in the treatment of pediatric patients in the primary care setting. In addition to updating attendees on clinical guidelines and best practices, presenters will include practice pearls that will be relevant to pediatricians in their own practice settings. Physicians will learn best practices for commonly seen diagnoses to create evidence-based strategies for improving patient care.

Disclosure policyNorton Healthcare adheres to the Kentucky Medical Association accreditation requirements and policies and Kentucky Board of Nursing Essential Areas and Policies, including the Standards for Commercial Support, regarding industry support of continuing education. During the planning process, all individuals in a position to control the content of this educational activity (course directors, planners, presenters) must disclose all relevant financial relationships they have with commercial interests as well as the nature of the relationship that may be a potential conflict of interest. These are assessed by the Norton Healthcare Center for Continuing Medical Education to ensure adequate resolution of any identified conflicts prior to the activity. Further, all physician attendees will be asked to evaluate all speakers’ content for bias and balance at the symposium.

All speakers and planners agree to uphold academic standards to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in their various roles as planners or faculty, providing balanced evidence-based views of therapeutic options, using only generic names when discussing therapeutic options.
