GINGIN MEN’S SHED PAY TRIBUTE TO PHIL TREMLETT.

Twenty members of the Gingin Men’s Shed plus wives and partners, attended the funeral of member Phil Tremlett, who tragically lost his life in a farming accident in December.Phil joined the Men’s Shed when it commenced operating at the old Golf Club Shed. In that time, he became an integral part of the shed, contributing in a variety of ways, always had his ‘trademark’ smile and a friendly chat for every individual. Phil’s main contribution to the shed was his expertise in setting up anything to do with electronics and entertainment.Last November, the shed completed a significant improvement with the extension of the Mezzanine Floor which included a large screen TV, Interactive Whiteboard and Projector. Phil worked tirelessly completing the installation and tuning so that all was operational for the Official Opening. For the occasion of his funeral, local Councillor and Bus Contractor Kim Rule donated the use and drove one of his buses to Pinnaroo with Men’s Shed members and partners on board. The shed members who attended joined with the Gingin Eagles Football Club to form a Guard of Honour when the hearse arrived at the Chapel.During the Service, conducted by Harvey Deagan, eulogies from two of Phil’s children were delivered, and then two members of the Gingin Men’s Shed had the honour of delivering a eulogy covering the many facets of Phil’s life, centering on his massive contribution to the wider community of Gingin. All members of the Gingin Men’s Shed express their condolences to Phil’s Family, and he will be missed by all of us.

Despite the more than warm forecast, it was a cool start to the morning for Australia Day 2020 as community members headed to the Neergabby Grounds on the banks of the Gingin Brook on Sunday morning. The barbecue was in full swing as community members began to arrive, manned by the folk from the Neergabby Association. Many brought camper chairs with them to set up on the grass in the shade of the trees. Musician Kelly Gardner was once again onsite and set the ambience with a selection of songs – many of them favourite Australian classics such as ‘True Blue’ by John Williamson.Official proceedings commenced from 9am with record numbers in attendance. Shire CEO, Aaron Cook, opened proceedings and invited Cr Jan Court forward to conduct an Acknowledgement to Country and the Yued People of the region. Attendees were then invited to stand and sing the National Anthem.Following this, Shire President, Cr Wayne Fewster, stepped forward to undertake his opening address before proceeding to conduct the Citizenship Ceremony. The community had the privilege of welcoming 13 new citizens to our Shire and by extension, to Australia. Congratulations to the following on officially becoming citizens of Australia:• Paul & Debra Bloor• Thi Coa• Paul Gregory• Peter Hanson• Graeme & Lisa Heasman• Lauren Johnson• Wan-Ju Liu• Ronel, Marexcl & Hillary Macasaet• Piroska Szakacs ThomasOur new citizens, together with the community, then stood to undertake the Australian Affirmation Ceremony which was shortly followed by everyone joining in to sing ‘I Am Australian’. A moving slideshow was paired with the song featuring images of the Shire’s own fire fighters during the recent Yanchep bush fire which threatened lives and homes in the southern area of the Shire, particularly around Woodridge. Many of the Shire’s volunteer firefighters have travelled over east in recent weeks to help fight the devastating fires there so the slideshow also featured some pictures from those fires.

The slideshow was a fitting tribute and smoothly led proceedings into the next order of proceedings which was the presentation of National Service Medals by Mr Phil Barrett, the Chief Bush Fire Control Officer for the Shire of Gingin. Recipients of the National Service Medals were as follows:Gary Barrett – Ledge Point Volunteer Fire BrigadeNational Medal Second Clasp for 35 Years of ServiceCarol Andela – Guilderton Volunteer Fire BrigadeNational Medal for 15 Years of ServiceTim Coleman – Ledge Point Volunteer Fire BrigadeBush Fire Brigade Medal for 20 Years of Service plus 5 Years of Service medallionThe medals for the following have yet to arrive. The crowd was very appreciative of the services rendered by these fire fighters in our communities and showed this with a huge round of applause.Councillors Linda Balcombe and Andrea Vis were then invited forwards to present the 2020 Australia Day WA Community Citizen Awards. There was a large number of nominees this year which is indicative of the great number of people involved with and striving to better our communities. It made it extremely difficult to determine an award recipient for each of the four categories. Congratulations to all of the following nominees and recipients:

Following the presentation of the Citizen of the Year Awards, special guest speaker, Edith de Burgh, was invited forward to address the audience.Edith hails from Switzerland originally and moved to Australia many years ago. She shared her story with the audience regarding her experiences since arriving in Australia and to the delight of the crowd, she had many roaring with laughter over these stories and unique observations. We’re not sure if she’ll ever give vegemite another go but all the same, we’re glad that Edith joined our community many years ago and whilst she still calls Switzerland home when she returns there, by extension she also calls Australia home when she comes back. Thank you to Edith for sharing her unique perspective.Official proceedings concluded with one last song (‘Waltzing Matilda’) and a final presentation to Vicki Colyer who, for some years now, has provided the extensive flower arrangements for the event. Both Shire President, Cr Wayne Fewster and Shire CEO, Aaron Cook, thanked the community for attending and also the large number of people who contributed to the setup, pack up and running of the event. This event would not have been made possible without the Neergabby Community Association, Kelly Gardner, Vicki Colyer, Shire staff and Councillors and many others. We all appreciate your contribution to this event which would not have been a success otherwise.

Perfect By Alan Gent

Eric got the idea as he looked through some old photos on his computer. He’d shown Sally the picture of them both at that beautiful Italian restaurant at Bateman’s Bay. They’d been on the way back from Queensland and had decided to ‘eat out’ that evening, being Valentine’s Day. The waiter had brought them a beautiful meal with a message from the chef wishing them a wonderful time and a rose from the manager for ‘the beautiful couple’. The whole day had been perfect. They’d arrived at the Bay around 3pm and the hotel had upgraded them to a spa room on the top floor with a lovely view. It looked as though it was the best room in the whole hotel, and that afternoon, they made the most of the spa and the view. Room Service brought them their favourite drinks – a margarita – and some complimentary hors d’oeuvres. The little restaurant had been the ‘icing on the cake’ with the staff seeming to fall over themselves to please them. There was only one way to describe the holiday, the hotel, the restaurant, the meal the…afternoon. Perfect.“Sorry Sir, I’m afraid we don’t have the suite available at the moment – we’re rather full”, was the response when Eric phoned the hotel. “Well, what have you got?” “We have an excellent room, Sir, close to the dining room if you like. Shall I book you in?”“Oh, OK. I’m sure it will be good – yes, book me in”. Eric was very disappointed. He realised the room may be a little smaller than the upgraded room they’d had before, and thought of calling other hotels. It was only a month to go to Valentine’s Day, and he surmised that all the hotels would be pretty full.He called the restaurant next.“Well, we’re rather full, Sir. I’ll check… Oh yes, we’ve had a late cancellation. We do have a table available.”Eric felt he could kick himself. If only he’d had the idea of a getaway a couple of months ago, it may have been a different story. He said nothing to Sally – it would be his ‘surprise’.The weeks rolled around, and it was finally time to spring the surprise on Sally.

“I’m taking you away tomorrow!” he said.“Oh, Eric. You should have told me. We’ve got Elsie coming down for the weekend. Remember?”Of course Eric didn’t remember. Not that he minded their only daughter’s company in small doses, but he was pretty sure he hadn’t been told.“But darling, I’ve made arrangements – bookings.”“Well I’m sorry Eric, but if you don’t listen… Look, I can’t put Elsie off. You know what she’s like.”Luckily Eric was able to change his bookings to the following week for both the hotel and the restaurant, but felt that it wouldn’t really be the same, a week later. The next hiccup in Eric’s plans came about when Elsie mis-read the time of her plane, missed it, and had to stay Sunday night, which meant Eric and Sally had to drop her off on Monday morning at the airport, then come home to pick up their bags before they could get on the road for Bateman’s Bay. It was pouring with rain when they finally got away about 2pm. Neither he nor Sally was in a good frame of mind. The rain certainly hadn’t helped. They had travelled around 200km when there was a very unusual sound from the back of the car, accompanied by a rhythmic ‘thump’. Eric stopped and got out to investigate – it was a flat tyre. The rain showed no sign of letting up, so he rummaged around in the boot, donned the emergency poncho he kept there and lifted the cover to the spare wheel. When he’d hiked it out onto the hard shoulder, it was obvious he had a bigger problem. The spare wheel was absolutely flat! ‘Looks as though I’ll need the RAC’ he thought. He got back into the car and pulled out his phone. Sally was very quiet, seeing the look of thunder on his face. Eric looked in dismay at his phone – no power! He realised he’d forgotten to charge it before they’d left home. Before he could ask, Sally said: “No, I left mine at home. Sorry.”The couple sat there for almost a minute before Eric heaved a sigh and said: “Perhaps there’s a farmhouse near here. You stay with the car and I’ll see if I can find one.” And before Sally had a chance to reply, he’d got out of the car and started walking. It had just turned 4pm, so Eric realised he would probably be late for the hotel. Of course, if he hadn’t decided to avoid the Freeway perhaps they could have hailed a passing motorist to use their phone or get assistance. Eric walked for about an hour up the drizzling depressing rain, thinking of how different this was from the ‘perfect’ Valentine’s Day he’d imagined.

If only he’d booked earlier, if only Elsie hadn’t visited, if only he’d charged his phone…if only! He wandered on disconsolately, deep in his own gloom, and was suddenly aware of a light behind him and the sound of an engine. He turned around, hoping to hitch a lift, when a very smart limousine pulled up alongside him. The passenger window rolled down and Elsie poked her head out! “Get in!” she said.It turned out that Charles – the driver – had seen Sally in their car and she’d told him all their woes. Charles hadn’t said very much, but after Eric had got in the car he said: “Well, I can’t promise you anything too special, but I do happen to own a hotel in Bateman’s Bay, and I’m sure we can find a really nice room for you. By the way, it also has a restaurant!” While Eric sat there, almost too shocked to speak, Charles was on his phone talking to Larry at the reception desk of the hotel to which he referred. “….that’s right, Larry. The one at the top. Oh, and they also want dinner, so book them in there will you? Put them down as my guests. No charge!”“That’s so nice of you…Charles,” said Eric, “but what about our luggage…it’s..”

“Taken care of,” said Charles. “It’s in the back!”Eric sat back in the plush seat, and despite his anxiety about the dampness of his poncho, couldn’t help wondering about fate, the Universe, the kindness of people, and above all, how absolutely perfect this Valentine’s night was going to be.

Book Review

The ErraticsBy Vicki Laveau-Harvie

This dark, funny and powerful memoir about a dysfunctional family is not one that you would expect to enjoy. Yet with the humour and agility of her writing, Vicki Laveau-Harvie makes it possible for us to relate too many of the issues raised in this novel. The Australian author, had been estranged from her parents for eighteen years, when she discovers that her mother has been hospitalised in Southern Alberta, Canada. She travels to Canada to join her sister is order to determine the well-being of their parents.

Set against the Canadian winter, in the small town of Okotoks, the sisters arrive to find their psychologically cruel mother has been admitted to hospital and to discover that she has been slowly starving their father. They find that it is difficult to deal with the hospital because their manipulative mother has persuaded the staff that she had no living children. As the challenges of dealing with their mother are revealed, we discover the reasons for the author’s estrangement from her. Their besotted father has retreated to his home where his wife has been squandering his money and where he is slowly wasting away with hunger.

Although their father does not show much affection towards the sisters, there are moments of tenderness that endear him to

them. The siblings try to organise their parent’s home so their father can live independently. This they find is a difficult task, when tradespeople and taxi drivers refuse to come, having previously had adverse experiences when their mother was in charge.

This Stella Prize winning novel is surprisingly gripping. It is melancholic, thoughtful and tender with its reflections on the emotional interplay within families.

Christmas for some of us, can be a day of the year not to look forward to. When a little bird whispered in my ear with the story of ‘Santa’s Helpers’, I had to share this with our readers.Over the past 3 years, a group of Gingin community members have taken it upon themselves to help those families and individuals that possibly needed ‘something extra’ to make Christmas Day that much more enjoyable. Washing baskets filled to the brim with food items, wrapped

presents and festive bits and pieces all gift wrapped, were delivered anonymously last Christmas Eve to 18 recipients.
