January 2020
Dear Coaches and Players,
Welcome to the 14th annual Mohegan Sun World Softball Coaches’ Convention. We are excited to have you
here. Our mission is to provide you with the very best in coaching education; and once again this year we have
secured top clinicians and designed a curriculum that addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas.
Here are a couple of convention notes for 2020:
- We are excited to return to Mohegan Sun’s state of the art Expo Center, where, in addition to our two main
Earth Ballroom meeting rooms, we've created two interactive learning areas - the Demo Infield presented by
Rapsodo and the On Deck Sports Batting Cage - which are located in the Exhibitor Zone.
- We have an event app that features the convention schedule, a list of exhibitors, a digital version of the event
handout and much more. Search Softball Coaches Convention in the app store. If you'd like to receive real-
time event updates and news, please allow us to push event notifications to your device of choice.
- Starting at 12:15pm, we are offering players and coaches the opportunity to meet and get photos with our
attending softball stars - Ally Carda, Lauren Chamberlain and A.J. Andrews - in the Exhibitor Zone. See the
event handout or app for details. Players have first priority for photos.
- We encourage you to take advantage of time early in your day to visit exhibitors, as some exhibitors have
flights to catch later in the day and the Exhibitor Zone closes at 3:30pm. We have dedicated exhibitor time
from 7:45 - 8:15AM, from 10:30 - 11:15am, and again during lunch (12:05 – 1:15pm).
We believe our convention is more than just a day of coaching and player instruction; it is a chance to bounce
ideas off your fellow coaches and players and learn from each other. Our presenters, exhibitors and clinic staff
will be available to you throughout the convention.
We thank all of our convention presenters for sharing their knowledge of and passion for the game. A special
thanks to our title sponsor, Mohegan Sun; and to our sponsors and exhibitors, whose support helps make this
event possible.
Enjoy your time here; and if you have any thoughts on how to improve next year’s Mohegan Sun World
Softball Coaches’ Convention, please let us know. Wishing much success in your upcoming season!
Yours in softball and coaching,

TOPIC: Thinking Outside the Box - Practice Plans for 2020
PRESENTER: Patrick Murphy, Head Softball Coach, University of Alabama
www.SoftballCoachesClinic.com
CONNECTION VS CONTROL COLLABORATION IS A KEY WITH GENZ! IMAGES OVER SPEECHES
I. Goal of every practice: make it tougher than the game! Make your athletes think on the run each day and games
will be easy for them! Growth mindset = wins!
1. Set goals each day, each week and each month
2. Set team goals and ask for individual goals often prior to the beginning of each practice
II. Have a plan and stick with it ... but be able to adjust on the fly (weather, class, injuries) (handouts)
1. 10 a.m. daily meetings
2. Goal of staff: no discussions of what to do next (to me, it looks disorganized)
3. Distribute to managers to see responsibilities/set-ups
4. Post in the clubhouse for team to see
5. Change your practice up daily -- be creative! Hitting only day/defense only day/baserunning day
6. No standing around -- give everyone a duty to keep involved
7. When scrimmaging, use situations often -- runner at 1st, runner at 2nd, runner at 3rd, etc
III. Make sure each player realizes her importance to the team and its success (expectation mtgs)
IV. You are going to be good at what you emphasize ... HLC, WIN, WIT
1. Work on things that are going to happen a lot
2. Keep it simple -- fundamentals
V. You take the ultimate responsibility of everything your program: was it a good practice? a poor one?
VI. Practice objectives -- see handout
VII. Speed up your practices
1. Music situations
2. Situations w/runners
3. Short bases
4. Ground balls w/baseballs
5. Anything timed -- put a stopwatch on it!
6. Teach anticipation -- what can you expect with this much knowledge of the situation
7. Use pitching machines (hack attack) to get hitters ready for speed in game
8. Random vs. Block
VIII. Competitions/lesson plans for GENZ
1. Survive and Advance Day (handout) 2. 8-team tournament (handout) 3. Cage Match! 4. The Greatest Showman
VIII. Review, review, review: spend small amounts of time each day to review many defensive situations.
