From the PrincipalFebruary 2020
Dear RVMS Families:
It is rewarding to see your children grow physically and academically throughout the year. As I walk around classes, attend sporting events and special activities, it is amazing to see them growing up right before our eyes!
It’s important to see your child at school everyday. Our curriculum calendar is rigorous and challenging. No amount of make-up work can take the place of in-class instruction, learning with peers, interacting with the teacher, or asking questions in real-time about the content. Being in school everyday raises your student’s academic achievement and helps him/her feel more connected to the school community. It is also a positive habit that can carry over when your child seeks employment.
Our belief in solid school attendance is supported by the District’s Raising Expectations Policy. If your student has 9 or more excused or unexcused absences in a semester, he/she will be required to complete 12 hours of remediation. Regular school attendance supports learning and achievement. Not everything missed during an absence can be made up, however focused tutoring and support from your student’s teacher is certainly an important way to help your student catch up.
Progress reports for students will be available via Powerschool beginning February 7th. You are also able to check your child’s current grades and attendance record on PowerSchool. Additionally, students are tracking their own grade progress and attendance.
We look forward to seeing you next week for conferences on Thursday (2/6) and Friday (2/7). Please contact your child’s teacher(s) if you are unable to attend during our posted conference hours:
• Thursday, Feb 6th 12:30 pm – 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. • Friday, Feb 7th 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Happy February,
Cristela Cardenas Principal, RVMS

Important Roadrunner Information
Parent Teacher ConferencesFebruary 6th & 7th
12:00 p.m. Dismissal Each DayParent-Teacher Conferences are extremely important to attend as they provide the
opportunity for you, your child, and your child’s teachers to meet and review your
student’s progress.
Thursday, February 6th, 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Friday, February 7th, 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Conferences for all grades and all teachers (including Art, Music, STEM, PE, ELP, and
Special Education) will be conducted on a walk-in basis with your child’s team.
It is our goal to meet with 100% of our parents! If you are unable to attend conferences
during these times, please contact your child’s teachers via e-mail or phone to arrange for
another opportunity to talk.
We look forward to meeting with you!
REMEDIATION HOURS Please take time this quarter to check with your child and his or her advisory teacher to determine if there are any remediation hours that need to be served either in after school remediation or the reteach classes. The after school remediation schedule can be found on our school website or in this newsletter.
We will also be offering Intersession classes in reading and math during the first week of the spring break, March 9th - 12th, for students to makeup up hours for reading or math, with the recommendation of the classroom teacher. These classes will be developed as well to help students be successful on the upcoming AZMerit test. More information will be forthcoming in February and available at parent-teacher conferences.
NJHS PENNIES FOR PATIENTS Pennies for Patients, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and our local Rincon Vista chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, is a science-based, service learning program. We connect schools with local blood cancer patients, provide tangible life skills to participants, and allow students to see the impact they're making in the lives of others. Our goal this year is to raise $2000.00. Our campaign will run from February 3rd- February 14th!
FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
It is cold and flu season. We are experiencing normal rates of illness for this time of year. We encourage you to monitor your children for cold or flu-like symptoms and keep them home if they are sick.
The following are reminders to help prevent the spread of illness.
• Clean hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub • Cover nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing • Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms
The Vail School District takes the health and safety of our students very seriously. If you have any concerns about the health and safety at your child’s school please contact the principal or health aide directly.

POWERSCHOOL PARENT ACCOUNTS
Dear Parents,
As we start moving through the next few months, we wanted to take the time to remind you that all enrollment processes are being conducted on line through PowerSchool. It is very important that you have an active and accessible PowerSchool account in order to complete the annual enrollment/update process.
Additionally, we are using Schoology more and more to communicate with parents, so an active and accessible account is also needed for Schoology.
If you need a new account set up, or help accessing an ex is t ing account , p lease contac t us at [email protected]. Please allow 24-48 hours for a reply.
Thank you.
Important Roadrunner Information Cont.
RVMS Student Attendance PolicyATTENDANCE
Regular attendance contributes to success in school. At Rincon Vista Middle School, attendance is one of our highest priorities.
A close correlation between attendance and academic achievement has always existed. Likewise, success in the job market is also dependent upon establishing good attendance patterns and work habits. It is with these thoughts in mind that the attendance policy has been developed.
It is our objective to assist students in developing more responsibility and to maintain acceptable attendance behavior. Reading the material and performing satisfactorily on tests does not compensate for the loss of insight gained during class discussion. The daily student/teacher/peer dialogue is extremely important and cannot be duplicated effectively outside of school. Each student contributes to the learning atmosphere.
Parents’ strong commitment to see that their children attend school daily and arrive on time is critical.
ABSENCES
When a sickness or other obligations make an absence necessary, we request that parents call the Rincon Vista Attendance Office at 879-3203 by 8:15 a.m. the morning of the absence. If we do not receive a phone call, we will try to verify the absence by calling the parent.
If a student is absent for more than one day, please call each day. We cannot assume the student is sick. An unexcused absence will occur if we cannot verify the absence from phone contact or written communication.
Absences shall be excused only for necessary and important reasons including illness, bereavement, other family emergencies, observances of major religious holidays of the family’s faith, and medical appointments that cannot reasonably be scheduled during non-school time.
School administrators may deem absences for family vacations excused as long as the absences are arranged at least 48 hours in advance and are limited to no more than five days per semester. However, administration has the authority to deem family vacations as unexcused absences if the student already has excessive absences or is making unsatisfactory academic progress.
We ask that you please work to schedule vacations and appointments outside of the regular school day. If an absence is planned, please make arrangements with the student’s teachers for make-up work. A student is provided one day to make-up assignments per each day of excused absence.
If you know your child is going to be checking out during the school day, please send a note with the student to be given to the school office.
EXCESSIVE ABSENCES
Students who have nine or more days of excused or unexcused absences in a semester will be required to complete 12 hours of remediation (See District Raising Expectations policy – enclosed in this newsletter and page 21 of the RVMS Student Handbook). A student’s full or half-day absence is calculated by the number of academic minutes he/she is in attendance at school.
RVMS Student Attendance Policy Cont.ARRIVING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY
It is important for students to arrive on time to school for a variety of reasons such as: • Being late can cause a disruption to the
class. • Students may miss important information if
they are late. • Being on time is an important life skill for
students.
Please be aware of the following policies should a student happen to be late to school: • Only medical and dental appointments
may be deemed as excused tardies. A student must have a note from the office of the medical practitioner at the time he/she is tardy in order for the tardy to be excused.
• Emergencies and special circumstances may be approved at administration’s discretion.
• Students who receive an unexcused tardy receive a “No” stamp for PRIDE. Students with continued unexcused tardies will be deemed as truant and law enforcement will be contacted.
Students who are tardy are to report to the office and sign in. Students leaving early must have permission from a parent. For safety reasons, students may not check themselves out of school. Only authorized persons may check a student out.
MISSING ASSIGNMENTS
Upon returning to school, students will be responsible for compiling and completing missing assignments. Make-up work should not exceed one week from the time a student returns to school following an absence.
HOMEWORK REQUESTS
A request for homework can be made when the absence is called in. Requested work may be picked up the following day. Work may also be
sent home with another student the following day. Requests can be made to the teacher or the school office.
WITHDRAWING FROM SCHOOL
As documentation helps to ensure uniform and comparable data across schools, districts and charters are to use the form: Official Notice of Pupil Withdrawal when a student withdraws during the school year.
Furthermore, Arizona state law requires that a properly executed withdrawal form be presented to a school if the student previously attended another school within the state of Arizona. (A.R.S. 15-827)
It is helpful if you can provide the RVMS office with your new address and the name of your new school at the time of withdrawal.
Students who withdraw are responsible for returning all books and paying for any lost or damaged books. This also applies to school athletic uniforms and/or any other equipment or materials.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
In cases of inclement weather, please check our school’s web site at rvms.vail.k12.az.us or call our front office at 879-3200 to gain information and updates on how this may affect the opening of school on such a day.
TRUANCY
Unexcused absences may be deemed as truant. Truancy is a violation of state and local attendance laws and is considered a serious offense. Continued truancy may result in legal action against the parents or guardians. The Arizona Compulsory Attendance Law makes it the legal responsibility of parents to have their children in school on a regular basis.
