GIVING BACK

75 years ago, Ed Wotruba, then President of Weber Lifelike Fly & Tackle in Stevens Point; Rollin Mabie, a CPA in Stevens Point; along with other local leaders, created what we know today as United Way of Portage County. Known as the Stevens Point War Chest in 1945, this group brought together many different agencies that were doing similar work to share in one large appeal to help people in need. While our role in the community has changed through the years, the legacy continues on: United Way brings together the resources of thousands of individuals and organizations to make a difference for those in need of assistance.

Stevens Society Legacy Gifts are individual gifts to the United Way Endowment. These gifts remain relevant as needs in the community continue to change and evolve. Gifts are invested and a percentage of earnings from these investments go to the most critical needs as determined by the United Way Board of Directors each year in perpetuity. Individual gifts with annual earnings of $500 or more are then highlighted in this Stevens Society Giving Roster.

Participation in the Endowment will enable donors to continue their tradition of caring and prepares United Way to address the pressing issues yet to come.

Each of us, as individuals and united together, play a role in improving the lives of residents here in Portage County. Our role extends to those with physical and mental disabilities, assisting the homeless, caring for the elderly, preparing children for the future, and building a stronger, more caring community for everyone. You do this through volunteering, through working with one another to solve problems that are bigger than any of us can solve on our own, and through your philanthropy.

In 2019, nearly 7,000 individuals provided a gift to United Way of Portage County. You rallied to raise over $3 million for the community through United Way. More than 2,000 of you also donated your time and talents through the United Way Volunteer Center, helping our most vulnerable populations when they needed it most. Thank you for your consideration of a leadership level - Stevens Society gift of $500 or more.

Nearly 1,100 people gave a Stevens Society gift of $500 or more in 2019. Stevens Society members raised over $1 million, helping keep seniors in their homes and independent; helping struggling families become self-sufficient; and helping mentoring kids in need of direction.

Leadership givers are recognized with an individual plaque and year plate and listed in United Way publications (unless anonymous). Gifts may be combined with a spouse/partner.
