As we begin a brand new decade, it’s the perfect time to step back and reflect on the successes of the hospice and the care we provide to our communities.

Our nurses and carers are much loved and

respected for the way they look after our patients

and their families; always showing love, respect

and dignity to each and every person and they

feel privileged to offer this personal care every

    single day and night.

It’s no surprise then that they continue to receive

incredible feedback from families and patients.

Some of this feedback is given verbally, some

choose to send cards and others leave feedback

on social media. Many also choose to leave

    feedback on www.iwantgreatcare.org, the

independent patient review website. Here is just

some of the feedback we have received recently:

“Staff excellent in every way. Cannot praise

enough. Skilled in their field, this is a special

place and we were made to feel like it was all

about us, not just mum! Thank you from the

    bottom of my heart.”

“The care shown to our family is nothing short of

magnificent. Nothing is too much trouble for the

wonderful staff. My wife has been treated with

dignity and love always (quite overwhelming). I

am struggling to find anything that requires

    improvement just keep doing what you’re doing;

    the experience is wonderful.”

We introduced three brand new events in 2019; a

Midsummer Ball, a summer remembrance event

and a Christmas Market. We were delighted with

the success of these events as they helped us to

engage with our wider communities and local

businesses. We’re really looking forward to

repeating all three events in 2020!

I hope you enjoy this Spring/Summer edition of

Your Hospice, which includes an interview with

    inspirational hospice supporter, Myra Lovelady,

who has raised an incredible £73,000 for the

hospice over the last 45 years (p5). If this inspires

you, take a look at p6 where you will find out how

you can help us by collecting money at big events

and busy locations across Liverpool and

Merseyside. We also have a spotlight on our new

tea round volunteers (p7) and a feature on our

newest shop in Walton Vale (p14).

You might think that being at the hospice on Christmas Day would be quiet, sad and lonely but our

staff, patients and families feel very differently. Every year, thanks to one very special volunteer, our patients receive a very special visitor and our nurses and carers have a great time too.

Our bee hives will be buzzing

again this year and we hope to

    have even more hospice

    honey available to purchase.

    Christmas at the hospice

We’re onThe hospice now has its very

own YouTube channel, called ‘St. Joseph’s

    Hospice Merseyside’.

To kick it off, we produced four brand new films at the end of last year, featuring our patients,

    families, volunteers and staff.

These films will help future patients and families to find out about the services we provide and what it is like to be cared for at the hospice.

They will also be used to recruit volunteers and

    to generate fundraising support and

sponsorship from our communities and local

businesses. The films can also be accessed from our website www.jospice.org.uk.

    A special range of

    jewellery, which is designed

around a loved one’s fingerprint, handwriting or an impression of their hand or foot, is now

    available from the hospice.

The beautiful range of hallmarked pendants,

keyrings, cufflinks and lockets is available in a choice of solid silver, gold and rose gold.

    Liverpool business, Recollections Bespoke

Jewellery, is working with the hospice to provide

the unique range of keepsakes and, for each

item purchased, 20% is donated to the hospice.

    YH Getting to know...

Long term support is incredibly valuable to the hospice and Myra Lovelady, from

Litherland, has been fundraising for the hospice for 45 years. During that time, she

    has raised an impressive £73,000.

    How has she done it?

Back in 1975, Myra and her husband Joe

responded to an appeal from hospice founder, Fr

Francis O’Leary, asking local churches to set up

their own 200 Clubs. Joe, who went to school with

Fr OLeary, and Myra, along with their friends

Tommy Hunt and Joe Traynor, set to work straight

    away.

They agreed they would charge £1 per month to

join the club and they would reserve £60 each

month for their prize fund. If they could recruit

200 members, this meant they would raise £140

    per month for the hospice.

Many of the congregation at their church, English

Martyrs in Litherland, signed up straight away,

along with friends and neighbours, and their 200

Club very quickly reached 200 members

But this isn’t the only way that Myra has support-

ed the hospice. She and Joe generously asked for

donations instead of gifts for their Ruby Wedding

party in 1997, which was held at the hospice in

what is now St. Francis House but, at the time,

was an education centre. They raised a fantastic

    £1,500.

Sadly, Joe passed away in 1999 but Myra carried

on with the 200 Club. She also sold hospice

Christmas cards to local schools and on her 70th

birthday, in 2003, she again asked for donations

and raised a wonderful £1,300. The 200 Club is

still drawn every month at the L21 Club in

Litherland and the winners are published in the

English Martyrs Church newsletter. Thanks to

Myra’s hard work, and the new members she has

recruited from her Moss Lane Bowling Club, the

200 Club still has an impressive 176 members!

Myra said: “Father O’Leary was such a character

and he worked so hard for the hospice so it’s

been a privilege to be able to support it for so

many years. Joe would have been really proud to

know that I have managed to continue running

the 200 Club all these years and I will continue to

run it for as long as I am able because the

hospice is a special place and they rely on this

kind of support to keep it going.”

There are loads of great ways you can help

the hospice so there’s sure to be a role that

    suits you and your availability.

At the moment, we are looking for some new

volunteers to go out and about in the

community and attend a range of big events,

    collecting donations for the hospice.

Our bucket collectors always work in pairs

and will go to busy areas, like train stations

and shopping centres, as well as to large

events like the Aintree races. This year, we

will also be trialling contactless donations so

it’s a great time to get on board. This is a

really fun way to help and it’s a great way of

getting out there and meeting people.

hoc basis and would like to do something

to help us, please get in touch.

    Our annual Volunteers’ Evening will

take place at the hospice on

    Wednesday 1st July.

This is a very special occasion when

we say thank you to all our volunteers

and treat everyone to a well-deserved

buffet and a few glasses of wine.

We will also present awards to

    long-serving volunteers. We hope to

see as many of our volunteers there as

    possible and we are keeping

everything crossed that the rain stays

Last year, we introduced a new

volunteering role to the hospice, our tea round

    or patient buddy volunteers.

We now have four volunteers in this role but we

need even more. If this is something that would

appeal to you, please get in touch.

Sandra Ellis, from Maghull, was one of our first tea round volunteers. She gives up a few hours on a

Wednesday afternoon to spend with our patients

and their families and says that, surprisingly, she

    doesn’t actually make much

    tea.

    “Sometimes no one

    wants tea but they

    usually like to talk

    so we often just

    enjoy having a

    chat. You really get

    to know the

    patients and their

    families and they enjoy

    seeing a familiar

    face.

”I always bring in some chocolate for those

patients who are allowed it, and that always goes

down really well. Some patients don’t have family

close by so it’s lovely to be there for them.

“We chat about all sorts and I never ask

anything personal or about their illness but

sometimes they do want to share and get things

off their chests and I’m here for them to do just that. It’s sad sometimes and I know they’re very

poorly but I feel really privileged to be able to get

to know them and spend time with them.”

YH PersonalStory...Paula Morgan, from Crosby, kindly offered to share her story, and that of her mum

Dee, so that others can see the impact that the hospice has on the lives of our

    patients and their families.

Paula, and her brother Shaun, grew up in

Waterloo with their mum Dee. When Paula was

10 years old, Dee was diagnosed with cervical

    cancer and received radiotherapy treatment.

Back in 1982, this treatment was not as

sophisticated as it is today and, whilst it did cure

her cancer, she experienced many years of ill

    health as a result.

Paula explains: “My mum struggled for a lot of

her life with muscle wastage in her legs and

kidney failure. She also had a triple

heart bypass. A friend of the family

    was diagnosed with cancer around

the same time but, sadly, didn’t

    survive. So, despite these health

difficulties, we have always been so grateful that we had another 37 years

    with our mum.”

In June last year, Dee fell whilst

getting out of the bath and banged her

head. It wasn’t serious and she was

treated for the bump but, while she

was in hospital, the doctors discovered

    an infection and, more worryingly,

sepsis. This got worse and eventually,

over the August Bank Holiday weekend,

she went back to Aintree Hospital.

“The treatment my mum had received

back in the 1980’s continued to affect her health. She needed to have a stoma

fitted and after a biopsy they discovered the cancer had returned”, recalls Paula.

After a few more tests, we were told it

was terminal and my mum really wanted

to transfer to St. Joseph’s Hospice.

Paula said: “Fortunately, Mum was transferred to

the hospice within a week and we were welcome

with open arms from the very beginning. Once

mum was there, everything changed. It was the

best possible place she could have been. I live in

Crosby with my daughter, Jessie, who is seven, so

it was close to my home and my work too. I used

to visit my mum during my lunch hour and then

I’d go back after school with Jessie.

all the staff was unbelievable and this really

difficulties, we have always been so

back in the 1980’s continued to affect

fitted and after a biopsy they discovered

Dee was at the hospice for six weeks

before she died on 16th November 2019 but

those six weeks were very special to Dee’s

    children Paula and Shaun.

“The relationships we formed with the nurses and

carers were really important because they were

there for us as well as for mum. Mum always said

she was happiest when it was just the three of us

    – my mum, my brother and I – and, during those

six weeks, we spent many hours, just the three of

us. And that’s how it was at the end too, with us

holding her hand, and I know that is what she

    would have wanted.

“My daughter Jessie also loved being at the

hospice with her grandma. Jessie was made very

welcome and it wasn’t a frightening experience

for her at all. It was a very comfortable and

homely place for her to spend time with her

    grandma.”

    One evening, about three days

before my mum died, Jessie said

she didn’t want to go to her

    swimming lesson. She’d had a

tiring day at school and just

wanted to see her grandma, so

    they abandoned swimming and

went to the hospice instead. Paula

recalls: “I had Jessie’s pyjamas in

the car to put on after her

    swimming lesson so I warmed

them on the radiator in mum’s room

and she put them on and snuggled

up in bed with her grandma. It was

    the most wonderful evening. Sadly,

that was the last time they saw each

other and I honestly think that my

mum knew that she was saying

    goodbye to Jessie.”

Paula says the most special thing

about the hospice is the dignity and

respect shown, right to the very end:

“The end of your life is never going to be easy or

nice but the care my mum received was

everything you would want for yourself and your

loved ones. The dignity and respect shown by

all the staff was unbelievable and this really helped us with the grieving process too. We

shared this special time together and we feel

privileged that we had the time to say our

    goodbyes.”

The hospice has opened a brand new shop in Walton Vale. It’s a

fantastic location, right next door to Home Bargains.

The shop is being managed by Vicky Jones, who

joined the hospice in January after running her own

florist shop in Ince Blundell for 20 years.

Vicky is being supported by a new team of

volunteers who help out in a range of roles, sorting

donations in the back, as well as on the shop floor,

    helping and serving customers.

Our new Walton Vale shop, which used to be a Learn

Direct facility, has been given a new lease of life and

    now sells women’s, men’s and children’s clothing,

shoes and accessories as well as toys, nursery

furniture, books, DVDs and vintage records – all to

raise valuable funds for the hospice.

After 20 years working with flowers, Vicky wanted a

complete change and felt she wanted to use her

retail skills in a more meaningful way: “This is a really

exciting move for me. It’s completely different but

there are also a lot of similarities. I really enjoy

working with our volunteers. We already have a few

and they’ve proved to be invaluable to me. I want to

build a strong team of volunteers here and would

urge anyone who lives close by and would like to

help, to drop in and say hello.

Gill, a volunteer at the Walton Vale shop, said: “I am

really enjoying volunteering in the shop. It’s really

convenient and it’s a great way to give something

back to society and support an important local

    charity.”

We urgently need more volunteers for this

shop and others. If you can spare a few

hours a week to support our hospice

    shops, which generate important funds

for the hospice, we’d love to hear from

    you.

florist shop in Ince Blundell for 20 years.

donations in the back, as well as on the shop floor,

After 20 years working with flowers, Vicky wanted a

exciting move for me. It’s completely different but

As our supporters will know, we’re always on the lookout for

furniture donations for our shops but, until now, we have only

been able to collect good quality items that we can sell.

However, the people of Merseyside have told us that they would

love us to provide a full, professional house clearance service

and so we have launched one.

We will continue to offer our existing free collection service, for

pieces of furniture that we can sell, but now we also offer a

professional house clearance service (quotes available on request).

Many of our families need help when they have lost a loved one and

tackling the emotional task of clearing out a house which is full of

memories, is often too much for them.

Our new house clearance service is run by our van drivers

and their volunteers who will go in and empty every single

room and take it all away, where possible, for recycling.

We do have to charge for this service, however, all

proceeds go towards providing care for our patients

so it’s a great way to support the hospice.

For a house clearance quote, or to

    arrange a free furniture collection,

    call on 0151 525 3072.

    New houseclearance service

We need strong volunteers to provide labour for our furniture collections and house clearance service. Call 0151 932 6043.
