You can hardly fail to have noticed the viral video of a rescue of an injured hiker gone wrong in the US, which made its way around the world recently – the 74-year-old woman was picked up after suffering a fall while hiking, but while being winched up to the helicopter, was caught in the rotor wash and spun round 175 times. In this month’s AirMed&Rescue, we talk to former Canadian SAR Tech Caleb Carr, who has developed a new kind of spinning prevention device in the hope that it will minimise the risk of such occurrences and save lives in the future.
Elsewhere, we’ve got features on the vast market potential in China, where the competition to become market leader in sales of civilian and military helicopters continues apace. We also have our fi rst feature in a series looking at the development of simulator technology and virtual reality training, and the challenges for providers of such technology to meet the needs of search and rescue operators who are tasked with keeping up their skills.
Our expert contributors this month include Charley Shimanski, Education Director of the Mountain Rescue Association, who has shared news about his development of a global safety training programme, and Chris Myers of Air Methods, who discusses the thorny issue of reimbursement of emergency medical fl ights in the US.
Safe fl ying all, and enjoy this issue!
