1. COME AND VISIT US!

Open Events at the College start in October. For details of these events please visit www.cardinalnewman.ac.uk

2. APPLY!

Applications to Cardinal Newman open in October. You can apply online at www.cardinalnewman.ac.uk Simply click on the ‘Apply Now’ tab. Apply before the 18th December to guarantee your interview in February/March.

3. ATTEND YOUR INTERVIEW

You will be given an interview appointment by letter which will take place at College between February and March. You will have an interview to make sure you have chosen the right course for you. This is a great opportunity for you to visit the College and ask any questions you may have about your programme of study.

4. ACCEPT YOUR PLACE

If you are successful at your interview you will receive a conditional offer email with instructions on how to accept your place. You must do this within 5 days of receiving your offer email.

5. NEWMAN FESTIVAL 2020

You will be invited to attend Newman Fest after your GCSEs. It is a chance for you to test-drive the subjects that you have applied for, meet the teachers and some of your classmates and learn all about the exciting opportunities available to you once you have enrolled.

6. ENROL AT NEWMAN

You will receive an enrolment appointment letter during the summer term. Enrolment will take place from GCSE results day.

The main difference between these courses is that A-Levels are assessed through examinations with some providing coursework modules, whilst BTEC courses are more coursework based with some practical assessments or work experience.

Choosing whether to study an A-Level or BTEC programme can be a tough decision to make, that’s why we offer students the opportunity to mix A-Levels with BTECs to balance exams with coursework and to create a broader combination of qualifications.

COURSES AND ENTRY CRITERIA

HOW MANY SUBJECTS CAN I CHOOSE?

The majority of students at Newman will follow a Level 3 Programme, studying at least three A-Levels (or equivalent) with some students studying four or more. At Newman the timetable is extremely flexible and many course combinations are possible including mixed programmes where you study A-Levels alongside BTECs. Guidance and advice regarding your subject choices will be given to you during your guidance interview and enrolment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The table below shows details of the standard College entry requirements. Subject specific requirements may apply and can be found on the College’s website. If you wish to progress onto an Advanced BTEC course, a Merit is expected in your BTEC L2 at school, along with five grade 4s at GCSE.

If you don’t achieve a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and/or English Language you will re-sit these as part of your programme of study.

Fine Art WHAT IS TEXTILES?

A-Level Textiles is an art-based subject in which you will experiment with a wide range of techniques including; drawing, painting, hand and machine embroidery, printmaking, garment construction, felt making, ceramics, screen-printing and many more.

WHAT IS ART & DESIGN?

You will gain knowledge and understanding of visual communication and the creative process. You will study the work of other artists and designers, producing a portfolio of work to support progression to higher education.

This is a vocational course, which means that all major project briefs will aim to better prepare you for what to expect in a creative work environment. Students work on live briefs alongside real life clients, which enables you to not only develop your creativity but also learn about how artists and designers work in the industry.

WHAT IS FINE ART?

Fine Art is the making and study of visual art, such as painting, printmaking and sculpture. The course covers a variety of different processes and skills.


You will create a portfolio which involves gathering research, observational drawing and looking at the work of others. The techniques you can expect to learn are; drawing, exploring different drawing styles, lino and mono printing, painting with acrylics and watercolours, etching, collagraph printing and mixed media. You will also be given an externally set assignment and you will choose a theme to develop.

In your second year, you will have the opportunity to use the skills that you have learnt, to develop your own emerging art practice in a more personal way.To complement your practical work you will also be asked to produce a 1000-3000 word dissertation.

Digital Photography is a way of visually recording, documenting and presenting both the ordinary and extraordinary. The Arts Award is an opportunity for students to get involved in the arts in a more hands-on way. It is a Level 3 qualification and is worth 35 UCAS points, which will count towards your university entry.

Creative Digital Media Production WHAT IS CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION?

This course involves developing the skills needed to plan and produce film, TV, radio and print texts. You will have the opportunity to develop your practical production skills and gain experience of the planning and research which takes place in pre-production, develop the camera skills needed to film for TV, video and film production tasks and the editing and evaluation skills needed in post-production.


Your work for this course will include the development of a portfolio of work which logs your progress, reflects your research and evaluates the skills you have developed. You will also learn how media products are consumed and how audiences interact with creative media products. In our extended units you will be given an opportunity to undertake work experience with a media company, and work for real clients producing advertisements and promotional videos.

Performing Arts WHAT IS PERFORMING ARTS?

Performing Arts will introduce you to a broad range of theatrical styles and approaches to acting and performing. It will enrich your ability to develop and embody roles from plays/screenplays. You will work in groups to create your own performance material and develop your improvisation skills through practical workshops.

Drama & Theatre Studies looks at the practices and theories of classical and contemporary playwrights, directors and practitioners of drama.

Music WHAT IS MUSIC?

Music A-Level offers the opportunity to analyse, perform and compose in a variety of different styles to develop your skills, confidence and music theory.


• Performance Unit - you will present between 6 – 12 minutes of performance work either as a solo performer or as part of an ensemble

• Coursework unit - you will complete between 4.5 – 10 minutes of composition from a minimum of two compositions. Composition one can be in any chosen style and composition two is a technical exercise with a given brief in the Western Classical Tradition

• Analysis of the Development of the Symphony (1750-1900) and gain an understanding of how musical elements are used in Rock & Pop, from structure to studio techniques

WHAT IS ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE?

A-Level English Language and Literature allows you to study language and the way in which we use it, whilst developing your writing skills, as well as studying a range of novels, poems, Shakespeare, post-1900 drama and classic non-literary texts.


The pre-1914 Poetry Anthology will give you a comprehensive introduction to the development of English Literature from the Renaissance to the Victorian period, referencing key literary movements and the broad range of social, political, historical and cultural factors that influenced writers.

Non-fiction is covered through the study of ‘In Cold Blood’, where narrative bias is explored alongside the novelist and journalistic devices used by Capote to produce this classic American text. Also, through studying discourse analysis, you will learn how to analyse spoken English in a variety of forms, including transcript analysis, scriptwriting and dramatic monologues. Other texts include; In Cold Blood, Jane Eyre, Othello, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

CORE MATHSWHAT IS GCSE MATHS?

GCSE Mathematics is essential for your future career prospects and is a qualification which is held in high regard by all employers. It is a valuable qualification and if you are intending to go to university to study at degree level, all university courses list it as an entry requirement.


This is a one year course, which will be delivered in a friendly and supportive environment. You will be encouraged to attempt a re-sit in November, to free up time for your other studies. You will be set weekly achievable tasks, with regular feedback, letting you know how you are progressing. You will be well supported as you try to overcome this often challenging hurdle. The two final exams are taken in the summer and will follow the same format as your GCSE exams at school, with a calculator paper and a non-calculator paper.

WHAT IS CORE MATHS?

Core Maths is equivalent to half an A-Level and will earn you up to 20 UCAS points. This is a one year course which can be studied in either Year 12 or Year 13 with just two lessons per week.

WHAT IS PATHWAY TO INDEPENDENCE?

The aim of the entry level programme is to promote Personal and Social Development skills and strategies. It aims to progress independence and communication skills needed in everyday life and work. The programme offers work related experiences, in a managed and supported environment allowing you to start to gain an awareness of the world of work.


• You will focus on Personal and Social Development and general employability skills building on areas such as Life Skills, Community Access, Communication and Wellbeing. Modules will cover independence in the home and community, developing self, work exploration and work related experience, health and wellbeing, confidence and communication

WHAT ARE T LEVELS IN EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE?

The T level in Education and Childcare is for students who wish to progress into skilled employment or higher level technical training or study in the education and childcare sector. You will complete a Level 3 Technical Qualification in Education and Childcare with a specialism in Early Years Education and Childcare. Included alongside the technical qualification is the completion of an employer set project and a weekly industry placement.

BTEC Functional Skills, BTEC Level 1 Award/Certificate, ASDAN Award/Certificate Level 1, ASDAN Short Vocational Courses, L1 Sports Leader Award.

WHAT IS PATHWAYS TO EMPLOYMENT?

This programme is designed to promote employability skills to allow students to move onto specific vocational courses at L1/2 and/or employment/training opportunities. The course aims to give students working at this level a stepping stone between school and much wider vocational choices. It allows students to develop transferable work and personal skills, which will help them to achieve their aspirations for the future. It also allows students to take time to make decisions about their preferred vocational pathway.


• You will focus on Employability Skills, building on transferable skills such as communication, organisation, teamwork and leadership. You will be able to undertake a work familiarisation programme with a local employer and there will be vocational tasters in Horticulture, Performing Arts, Hospitality or Health and Social Care, to support career exploration

• All students will undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment and work within the appropriate levels in order to progress. Accreditation will be pursued where appropriate

CAREERS GUIDANCE

We have a specialist careers team who will support you in making decisions and choices for your future. There is a dedicated area with a range of careers information, university prospectuses and online resources.

The Careers Team also organise a range of guest speakers to visit College throughout the year to deliver a diverse range of talks which include University choices, Higher Education Student Finance, Apprenticeships, Gap years, study abroad and more.

For those students choosing an employment route when they leave College, we offer employability workshops throughout the year to support with CV writing, application forms, personal statements and mock interviews.

To enable all students coming to Cardinal Newman College to achieve their learning goals, the College has a dedicated and specialist Learning Support team. The team has wide experience in supporting students with specific learning/health needs.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING SUPPORT

They also liaise with the Examinations Office to ensure that there are individual arrangements in place for examination concessions. This can include assessment for additional time, provision of readers and scribes, and the use of word processors.

At Cardinal Newman we provide tailor made support packages, which allow students to work at their own pace and reach their full potential.

Support is mainly in the form of 1:1 or small group tutorials with a tutor. We also deliver some in class support. Support is very much student-centered and based on what each student wants to work on.

When you come to Cardinal Newman, you will have your own Achievement Tutor. Your Achievement Tutor will support you in all aspects of College life: from guidance in your studies; help with your study skills; advice regarding possible career progression and application to Higher Education; to arranging any extra help or support you may need during your learning. Through regular one-to-one reviews of your progress, individual target setting and action planning, your Achievement Tutor will work with you to ensure that you reach your full potential whilst at College.

If you feel the need to talk in confidence about issues that are worrying you, then we have college staff counsellors available for consultation. FuturesPROGRAMME

Taking part in the ASPIRE programme is your opportunity to really make the most of your time with us, the chance to try something new, get involved with something you love and make new friends.

You’ll have loads of fun with a range of activities to get involved with, trips to attend, and guest speakers to hear from. Most importantly though, you’ll be learning and developing some fantastic skills outside of the classroom, the kind that employers and universities really value. Successful completion of the programme will also make a great addition to your UCAS or Apprenticeship personal statement and reference.

The ASPIRE programme will run over the course of a year, and you will have produced a portfolio showing evidence by the end of the year of your involvement in three categories. Your evidence will be personal to you, chosen by you and will reflect your own interests.

THE CATEGORIES YOU WILL BE INVOLVED WITH

Curriculum: Evidence of your actions to develop your achievements in your subjects, e.g. Curriculum Plus, study groups, detailed independent learning plan and target setting, additional reading.

Community: Evidence of taking part in events and activities that support the spirit of ‘community’ in or outside of College, e.g. create a study group, charity fundraising, peer mentoring, Newman Active, supporting College events.

Charity: Evidence of your contribution to charity in and/or outside of College, e.g. supporting department charity events, raising money, raising awareness.

The aim of this programme is to further support you with your development outside of the classroom. We firmly believe that you need to be happy and enjoying your studies in order to succeed, and this programme allows you to make the most of your time at Newman. The range of sessions and enrichment available as part of ASPIRE will enable you to become a more resilient, positive and effective learner. It is also a fantastic opportunity for you to connect with your fellow students and become even more of a part of the Cardinal Newman community.

This enrichment programme aims to give you a head start with your career, introducing you to each of these professions and allowing you to explore the possible pathways within each field.

If you are considering becoming a teacher, ‘Future Teachers’ will help you to gain an insight into teaching programmes that are available at universities. It will enable you to experience a Teaching Taster Day and attend a variety of sessions including ‘Why Teach?’, Personal statement and interview techniques, creating lesson plans and use of classroom technology.

Engineering is a diverse industry which affects most aspects of our everyday lives. Many students are interested in pursuing a career within engineering, but are often not sure which area of engineering is right for them.

Our ‘Future Engineers’ Programme will give you a head start with your engineering career and give you the opportunity to explore and consider the different disciplines of engineering: Electrical; Fire Safety; Motorsports; Chemical & Civil. You will have the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions including an introduction to the programme and Engineering Disciplines, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Civil Engineering as well as visits to Baxi Engineering and the new STEM centre at UCLan.

‘Future Health’ is suitable for anyone considering a career within the Allied Health Professions. There are several talks throughout the year from industry professionals including ‘Getting into Nursing’ – Personal Statement and Interview Techniques, an introduction to the six Cs and quality standards in care. There will also be an opportunity to attend a Health Taster Day at the University of Cumbria.

The HE+ Programme is a prestigious programme run in conjunction with the University of Cambridge. We are the only University of Cambridge Hub for Lancashire, which means we are perfectly placed to not only help prepare students for applying to Cambridge,

but to any of the UK’s Russell Group Universities. You will get advice, guidance and support on how to make the best possible application, preparation for interviews including mock interviews and seminars run by admissions tutors from Cambridge University itself.

As Cardinal Newman is one of Cambridge University’s HE+ Institutions, we aim to engage students in a sustained year-long programme, which includes academic extension classes, subject masterclasses, information and guidance sessions and visits to Cambridge University.

HE+ is designed to stretch and inspire the UK’s most academically-able students, encouraging and preparing them to make competitive applications to top universities.

THINKING OF A CAREER IN MEDICINE?

If you have a strong and realistic commitment to studying within the fields of Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science at university, then the Medical Society is an enrichment programme which can develop and support you on your way. Some of the benefits of joining this society include receiving guidance on writing a UCAS personal statement, information regarding the UKCAT/BMAT exams and preparation for possible questions at interviews.

PRESTON WIDENING ACCESS PROGRAMME (PWAP)

PWAP is another programme aimed at supporting qualifying students who aspire to enter the medical profession, to attain a place on the Medical Undergraduate programme with the University of Manchester.

The programme comprises of a range of activities and study which will support students to enhance their application to university. Successful completion of the programme will result in a guaranteed interview with the University of Manchester for a place onto their Medicine degree.

A*SUPPORT

In addition to having access to all these excellent opportunities at Newman, you will also receive timetabled A* support: lessons from our dedicated tutors in all your subjects and be timetabled into an A* programme tutor group, putting you alongside like-minded students to help you achieve your fullest potential.

The Extended Project Qualification or EPQ, is an additional qualification that can be studied alongside your BTEC or A Levels at Cardinal Newman, starting at the end of Year 12 and completed in Year 13.

Extended Project Qualification

Worth 70 UCAS points (which is equivalent to half of an A-Level), universities including Oxford and Cambridge encourage students to study the EPQ, as it is highly regarded and often features in a student’s offer from university.

The EPQ provides you with the opportunity to choose the topic and type of project that you complete, meaning you can choose something that you are especially interested in or passionate about. You could choose to explore an aspect of a subject that you are studying further, choose something in which you have a personal interest or do a project about an issue that concerns you.

It is especially useful for students who are aspiring to progress into a career in a highly competitive field such as Medicine or Law, as it showcases your abilities for independent study and research and you could choose a topic that is relevant to that area of study.

It shows admissions staff at universities that you are self-motivated, imaginative and committed to study and has helped students to gain places at the UK’s most prestigious universities.

You will have the support and guidance of a member of College staff throughout the project, which gives you the opportunity to receive feedback along the way.
