Hello,On behalf of our entire community, it is pleasure to introduce our 2020 Program and Event Guide. We sincerely hope that you’ll join us at Sail Sand Point this year as we bring the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to many more people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Our work at Sail Sand Point is about breaking down barriers and making sailing and small boating accessible for all. In doing so, we have experienced exciting growth and development and 2019 was no exception. More than 16,000 participants joined us for transformative experiences on the shores of Lake Washington. We expanded our Group offerings, added new boats, developed new partnerships and laid the groundwork for an exciting new vision for our campus. And in 2020, we look forward to sharing even more opportunities to get onto the water, with all of you.

As you consider the camps, classes, events and volunteer opportunities outlined within this booklet I encourage you to consider other people who might like to participate as well. I genuinely believe in the therapeutic, positive, healthy rewards of sailing and boating and I hope you’ll join us in sharing this gift with others. And as you consider friends, kids, relatives or colleagues who might enjoy or benefit from our programs, please note that we allocate roughly $50,000 in scholarships and offer numerous free and low cost events and programs so that tuition should never be a barrier. Additionally, our diverse fleet and wide range of offerings, from introductory beginner to adaptive to more advanced skills programs, ensure there is something right for everyone.

About Sail Sand Point

Sail Sand Point is Seattle’s Community Boating Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, founded in 1998 with a fleet of donated boats and volunteer

instructors. Sail Sand Point opened its doors in the retired naval base now known as Magnuson Park, and in the 21 years since our humble beginnings, we've continued our mission to make sailing and paddling accessible for all. With 552 outreach participants, 1,126 hours of adaptive sailing, and $49,492 awarded in scholarships last year alone, Sail Sand Point strives to remove the obstacles that have historically kept people on-shore. Our youth camps, adult classes, and open boating program are all designed to allow anyone to get out on this beautiful slice of lake we call home!

As a community of boaters, Sail Sand Point is committed to fostering a welcoming environment where students feel empowered to learn and succeed both on and off the water. In every class, our instructors nurture self-confidence, cultivate leadership skills, and inspire an appreciation for our aquatic environment. This philosophy has made SSP and its staff national leaders in sailing education, recognized with the US Sailing awards for More Than 10 Years of Hallmark Performance, Excellence in Instruction, and Outstanding Program Director. Our programs do more than teach people how to sail, they help people discover a lifelong passion they can share with a flourishing community of sailors and paddlers!

Sail Sand Point’s mission is to bring the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to people of all ages, abilities, and

backgrounds. To learn more about any of these programs, visit our website!

ScholarshipsAt Sail Sand Point, we believe that everyone deserves the confidence, strength, and joy provided by being on the water, guiding your own vessel. We provide full and partial scholarships to youth, adult, and group participants. Scholarships are instrumental in helping to eliminate barriers for water access and transforming the image of a stereotypical sailor. All less advantaged participants are welcome to apply.

Community EngagementAt Sail Sand Point, community is everything. We are proud to host a variety of free events and programs for long-time participants and new visitors alike. You can see a full list of events on page 23. To keep up to date with our community events this season, follow us on social media!

Volunteering

Adaptive Watersports

Sail Sand Point thrives on the enthusiasm, time, and expertise donated by our volunteers. Volunteers help with maintenance, host events, and even help teach classes. Join Sail Sand Point’s wonderful group of volunteers! The volunteer program is simple: fill out an application on our website, sign up to help with events or projects, and receive one hour of Open Boating time for every three hours volunteered.

We work hard to get people on the water regardless of ability. Being on the water is a therapeutic practice that not only provides recreation, but offers a life-changing opportunity for healing, growth, and independence. Through partnerships with organizations like Outdoors for All and the Alyssa Burnett Center, we've developed specialty programs to promote the benefits of adaptive watersports.

Working with US Sailing’s STEM Education Initiative, Sail Sand Point has created kid-friendly, sailing-related science modules that can be incorporated into any of our regular programs. Our "Sailing Into STEM" camp brings science to life using sailing and our aquatic environment to teach about physics, geography, and biology.

Boat Yard

S ail Sand Point’s boat storage yard is designed to make Lake Washington more accessible to small boat owners and help us achieve our mission.

The boat yard is intended for non-motorized, hand-launchable boats, including kayaks, SUPs, rowing dinghies, and small sailboats.

Our boat yard is an active use yard, meaning all boats must be used 8 or more times per year to be eligible for storage. SSP has a scholarship pro-gram for low-income individuals who may otherwise have trouble afford-ing the cost of storage. Boat storage users have 24/7 access to their boats within a securely locked fenced area. Store your boat with us and be on the water in minutes! Please see our website for more details, including availability and pricing.
