8am‐9am History Taking is an Art! This course is designed to enhance history taking skills by iden fying pi alls staff may fall into when taking medical history. Some of the areas we will discuss include how to address and iden fy the pa ent, pain assessment, how to push the pa ent without being pushy, phrases & comments to avoid, and the proper sequence of a history. AOA CPC PT‐0036‐17 & ABO
9am‐10am Performing Thorough And Reliable Visual Fields It is not enough to be able to “do” a visual field – you must be able to do thorough, consistent and reliable visual fields. We will discuss parameters of a visual field, the se ngs of the HVF, False Posi ves and False Nega ves, Grey Scale, and the different types of HVF available. Discussion includes the Prechiasm, Chiasm and Postchiasm and how to an cipate what visual field defects we may see when performing visual fields. AOA CPC PT‐0016‐19 & ABO
10am‐11am Exhibit Hall
11am‐12pm Technicians & The Anatomy of Glaucoma Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world yet is one of the most misunderstood diseases. Understanding the anatomical dynamics of this disease is difficult due to the percep ons we, as well as our pa ents, have regarding ideal IOP readings, VF results and corneal thickness evalua ons. What do the numbers mean to your doctor?
12pm‐1pm Essilor Sponsored Lunch *must register *limited sea ng
12pm‐1pm TLC Sponsored Lunch *must register *limited sea ng
1pm‐2pm The Ugly Eye: What Do I Do with That? This course will discuss eye trauma & ocular diseases in regard to the urgency needed ge ng them in to see a physician. We will discuss pa ent complaints and why some problems are ”not as bad as they look” whereas other eyes that seem not as urgent actually need immediate a en on. AOA CPC BP‐0015‐17 & ABO
2pm‐3pm Office Based Minor Surgical Procedures: Preparing The Room, The Pa ent and You When it is determined that an in‐office procedure (chalazion, laser, angiogram) needs to be performed, there are a number of considera ons that have to be worked into the equa on. Does the pa ent need to sign a consent for the procedure? Are they legal to sign the consent? When se ng up the room – how sterile do we need to be? And a er the procedure, how do we clean the room for the next pa ent? We need to ensure that we are following the same quality of care for an in office procedure, as we would for a major case to ensure the pa ent is receiving the highest quality of care. AOA CPC SP‐0004‐19 & ABO
3pm‐4pm Clinical First Aid: I Think My Pa ent Is Sick When Should You Call 911? A discussion on topics such as Panic A acks, Fain ng, Strokes, Shortness of Breath, Seizure/Convulsions, and Heart A acks. AOA CPC FA‐0001‐19 & ABO
4pm‐5pm The Difficult Pa ent: The “Bad Kid” Scenario Pa ents may get labeled as a “difficult pa ent”. These pa ents can be angry, irritable or even down right mean in the eyes of your staff. The ques on that rises is why? Through an interac ve teaching process, we will look at the “difficult pa ent” and walk through the steps that might have occurred to make that pa ent appear to be difficult to assist. When you start to break it down, it might not be the pa ent that is difficult, but all the scenarios around them that lead to their behavior. Understanding those dynamics can help you turn that pa ent around and get a great exam.

9:00am‐10:00am Your Staff is Not Ready Many offices train throughout the year on their con ngency plans for when there is an emergency‐ either internally or externally. Managers will tell you that their staff is ready in the event of fire, tornado, pa ent medical crisis and even intruder alerts. But how do you know that they are really ready? We will discuss a number of scenarios and procedures that your staff should be aware of to get themselves, as well as the pa ent, through the crisis. AOA CPC PM‐0094‐19 & ABO
10:00am‐11:00am Exhibit Hall
11:00am‐12:00pm Scary Tech The very traits that make us outstanding technical staff are also traits that can get us and our pa ents into trouble. When independent decision making turns into failure to seek input, “star” quali es turn into “loner” employee behavior, and the “me” a tude replaces teamwork, the pa ent is the one that will eventually suffer.
