Since 2009, the management of residual material is a priority on the territory
We created 18 730 tons of materials in 2018. It’s 4% more than 2016.
What were the defined objectives?
The materials generated on our territory are directed to 4 sectors: Composting, recycling, eco-centers and landfilling. In 2018, we were still sending 46% of our materials to landfill, but only 22% of them were real trash.
Bury less than 550 kg of waste/inhabitant
Recover at least 70% of recyclable materials
Reduce the quantity of buried CRD residues by 35%

COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATIONCollection Schedule
Every two weeks, all year
Summer: Each weekAutumn: Every two weeksWinter: every three weeks
Chips are used to: • Indicate us at what point of its round the truck is at • Calculate the participation rate to the right collections • Identify the areas where to promote awareness
You do not want the snowplow to overthrow your bin? Follow this advice!
Bin placed the day before collection
Wheels facing the house
No material placed beside or going
above the bin
Bin placed 2 feet away any object
Bin on my property, at 10 feet
of the white line / not on the sidewalk
nor the street
WEATHER ALERTPlease note that
in the event of a majorsnowstorm, the collection
could be movedto the next day.
What is the purpose of chips on my bins?
In Rocher-Percé RMC, the blue
bin participation is 85% and up
to 59% for the brown bin. We
could anticipate savings
approximately $ 200,000 just
by increasing composting up
to 80%
How to place my bin down the road? What to do if my bin is broken or if it has not been picked up?
Where can I get a new bin?
In a hardware store for the recycling and waste bins. For the brown bins, please call us!
You can use a big yard waste paper bag to avoid the materials sticking to your brown bin.

What is the purpose of the blue bin?
The blue bin was set up to recycle CONTAINERS, PACKAGING, PRINTS from our consumer goods if they are made of PAPER, CARDBOARD, PLASTICS, GLASS and METAL.
So, I cannot put a plastic toy or a shirt inthe blue bin because these are not containers, packaging or prints?
That’s right! What does NOT go into the blue bin? How can I recognize
flexible plastics?
How can I know what to do with a material that is not mentioned here?
If it elongates, it is recyclable!

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
What do they have in common? How should I dispose of them?
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can contaminate the environment or cause health problems if they are not properly managed. They also have a great recovery potential, that needs to be increased.
Preferred Choice: The Eco-Center
WEEE: Bulky waste collection

COMPOSTING – At Home
What goes into the brown bin?
How to avoid maggots and flies?
Prevent flies from laying eggs on meat and fish by wrapping them in newspaper. This is called the “papillote” trick! You can also keep them in the freezer until the day of collection.
Organic materials! Everything that comes from living organisms such as plants and animals.
• Leftovers• Coffee and tea
(grounds, filters and bags)
Soiled papers and cardboard
(put in the recycling if clean!)Animal litter
(including excrement)Sand and earth
• Branches (Max. 1 inch in diameter)• Leaves, grass, hay, etc.
How to proceed at home?Accepted and Rejected Materials in the Brown Bin
FOOD GREEN RESIDUES OTHERS
Transfer the content of your counter bin in your brown bin, alternating with dry materials
Have your counter bin within reach and double it with some newspaper or a paper bag
Follow the instructions on page 4 (month of February)
over the bottom of the bin with dry materials and use a “yard waste paper bag” + avoid putting liquids in the mix!
In the summer, put it down the road EVERY week to avoid smelling and maggot problems! In the winter, only put it down the road when needed

COMPOSTING SITE
Organic materials are discharged on a platform and employees remove the contaminants, plastic, glass, metal, etc.
Materials are crushed and wood chips are added.
We mix everything to integrate oxygen and foster the work of microorganisms (bacteria, mushrooms, etc.).
1
2
3
We let the piles of compost mature for 4 to 6 months. The temperature can reach 75°C!
We sieve the mature compost to remove impurities and then we send samples for laboratory analysis to ensure its quality.
The compost is sold in bulk at the composting site of Chandler or in bags in hardware stores on the territory.

Their real decomposition time is too long;
They prevent food from mixing to dry materials, which
is essential for composting;
They will need to be open during manual sorting;
All of the above.
The composting site sells
approximately 450 m3 of
compost per year to individuals
and municipalities. Come see us!
Once my brown bin is emptied, where are the materials going?
What are the steps of the composting process?

This is why it is safe to put tissues and litter in the brown bin!
Why cannot I get free compost? I have worked for this...
Sale of compost allows to recover taxes and thus lower the operating costs of the site

The 4R: Residual material management hierarchy
In 2019, more than 300 studentsand adults visited the Chandler
composting site and the Grande-Rivière sorting center
during their open houses.
Refuse disposable objects and reduce consumption
Reuse an object several times or transform it for another usage
Treat a material to reintroduce it in a manufacturing process
Enhance a material with a chemical or physical transformation e.g.: • Crush the wood to re-introduced it into the composting process • Compost the organic residues

At the Store During my Outings At Home
1
I bring my reusable bags!
I prioritize unpackaged items or items with recycled packaging.
I have with me at all times: A container
Utensils
A reusable mug
I refuse flyers with the sticker:
I buy second hand and I give my objects that are STILL USABLE to a donation center or organization who need them
I buy sustainable and repairable products
I learn to repair my objects
I share my tools with my close relatives

In the world, 137,000 cigarette butts are thrown away every second!
A cigarette butt thrown to the ground corresponds to... • 4,000 chemicals released to the environment • 500 liters of polluted water

Disposing of organic materials in the brown bin is… • Supporting five jobs at the composting site of Chandler. • Giving a second life to the materials by generating great quality compost.
Disposing of recyclable materials in the blue bin is… • Supporting sixteen jobs at the recycling center of Grande-Rivière. • Giving a second life to the materials by producing new recycled products.
Benefits for the Region
YOU can make a difference by disposing of your materials at the right places
Plastic is often found in the ocean where it breaks into small particles that can then be swallowed by fishes and finish in our plates! Moreover, sea currents form what we can call “plastic continents”
And what if we had recycled them...
Per year, nearly 500 tons of glass are process and
reuse locally.

LANDFILLINGWhat is an engineered landfill?
An engineered landfill is a series of sealed cells that we fill with our waste. Once the capacity is reached, we permanently close these cells with an airtight “hat.”
• Waste Water (leachates): Waste water are treated and then tests are performed (26 parameters imposed by the ministry) before being discharged into the river
• Biogas (methane [CH4] and carbon dioxide [CO2]): Gas generated at the time of the decomposition of the buried materials are flared. This way, we greatly reduce their impact on climate changes.
Numbers
that count
Throughout the Years...
Since 2014, there has been a notable decrease of buried materials coming from the residential sector thanks, notably, to the participation to composting and Eco-Centers.
A characterization study done in 2015 has shown that only 22% of buried materials coming from the Rocher-Percé RCM are real waste. The vast majority of what is buried should have rather been disposed in the brown bin, the blue bin or at the Eco-Center.
What do we bury?
Do not forget your good habits during the holidays...
• Paper wrappings are recyclable, but not those in plastic.
• Natural Christmas trees support local businesses and can be recovered at the Eco-Center!
• Leftovers from the holiday feast can also be composted!
ReminderReminder
Landfilling costs up to twice
more than composting and
recycling. It pays to sort!
What is a « real trash ?»
It is a material that cannot be recycled, composted or recovered at the Eco-Center. The more we reduce landfilling, the more we reduce costs.
Did you
KNOW? Since 2017, the biogas treatment
has prevented nearly 20,000 tons
of CO2 equivalent. This represents
the emissions of 5,000 cars
in a year!
