As the Exalted Ruler for 2021/2022 year, I am honored to have this opportunity to lead and serve for the next year. I look forward to meeting or working with each of you at some point, increasing my knowledge of the Elks, and enjoying our time together. We welcome family, friends, neighbors, etc. to join; as new members are so important to all of us and the future of the lodge. I would like to thank the previous Exalted Ruler, Mary O’Brien, and her team, as they had a truly challenging year as it was not easy to lead the lodge through a pandemic. Thanks to Ricky Lowman for serving as the House Committee Chair this past year and a special Thank you to all the staff dealing with so many changes due to Covid at the lodge! 2020 and so far 2021, has been full of unprecedented times with COVID-19. Your lodge is keeping health and safety a top priority. Masks are required to enter the lodge and throughout the lodge except when eating or drinking. Please stay home if you are not feeling well, have a persistent cough or fever. We need to support each other, the community and engage the membership in activities, when healthy enough to do so. The lodge is open and your lodge Officers and staff are looking forward to seeing and meeting you when you feel comfortable to return. While I do not expect the start of my year to be easy, we have many plans for the upcoming year while we maintain social distancing and adhering to the Maryland Department of Health and CDC guidelines or recommendations. I appreciate the support I have and will continue to have of the Past Exalted Rulers Association to mentor and guide all of the incoming Officers. We will have a DJ/Karaoke- Jammin George, with seafood on the menu on April 2nd to "WELKome" our new team. As many of our members have requested, one of the things we are bringing back, is our Friday night bar bingo starting in April. Our charity for bingo during May, will be the American Cancer Society. If you have a special charity, please let me know and we will do our best to include it in a bingo. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming events currently in the planning phase and while we work out the spacing. Enough about me... I want to hear about you... seriously! I would like to hear from all members on what it means or has meant to you to be an Elk. How long have you been a member, where did you join, your favorite memory or event? As a fairly new Elk of 5 years, I enjoy hearing the stories of two sit down dinners that required reservations. I believe everyone was dressed to the “nines” in formal attire… sounds exciting! As long as your letter is not rated R <smile>, I would like to share with other members or future members. Either through our newsletters or social media so we can share your experience with you. Please feel free to include your picture. Email me at [email protected] or mail a letter to my attention at the lodge. SECRETARY’S SAYApril 2021/May 2021

I would like to thank the Officers from last Lodge year for their efforts during a very trying time, dealing with the virus and at the same time congratulate and welcome the new Officers who will take up the reins for the upcoming year. I am sure that there will be many challenges for them to overcome but together we, as a Lodge, will survive this pandemic.

As I am sure you are aware; there were mailing issues at the Grand Lodge level which delayed the mailing of the renewal notices and an error on my part regarding the lack of a place to request a spouse key card. We will work through this as well.

Those who have paid should have received their “green” Member cards & key cards. This is the card that you will need to open the front door of the Lodge after April 1st, to gain access. The “yellow” ones are no longer valid & should be discarded. If you do not have a current Member card & key, please pay your dues promptly to avoid missing any of the upcoming, exciting events. You can use the dues renewal form that is enclosed in this publication.

Any Widows that would like a key card, please request one by sending me a note along with $5.00 and a stamped, self-addressed envelope and I will get it to you.

I will close by asking that you advise me when you have any changes to your street or email address. I would also ask that all you “snowbirds” please email me when you return to the Land of Pleasant Living as well as when you leave for the winter. You can either call me at the Lodge at: 410-573-0201x12 or email me at [email protected].

Fraternally,Lou Schmeltzer, PDD

Secretary

MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER (continued from page 1)

Our Elk of the Month for April is Adele Ward-Lerner and for May is Peggy Monaghan. Both have been volunteering through the pandemic to serve you at the bar. Please thank them when you stop in next. I want to give a big "SHOUT OUT" to my boy, Juan in the kitchen as well.

Last, During the month of June and July, we would like to collect donations for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. You are welcome to drop off non-perishable food items in the Elks lobby or mail in a monetary donation payable to “Annapolis Elks #622” and be sure to put “Food Bank Donation” in the memo section. You can also order through Amazon and have delivered directly to the lodge. So many of us are blessed while our neighbors are suffering. It’s more important now than ever, that the Annapolis Elks Lodge support our community.

It’s Good to Be Blessed. It’s Better to Be A Blessing – Author Unknown Kind thoughts, Libby G. Dohm
