The airways that radios use to operate on. Business band radios generally operate on VHF or UHF frequencies. Cellular generally operates on 800 MHz or 1900 MHz frequencies. Cordless Phones and Wireless Computers normally operate on 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz.

Radio frequency band between 150-160

Radio frequency band between 450-470. This band has better penetration characteristics through steel and concrete.

In this mode the radio is allowed to listen to anyone that is on the same frequency. Disables the PL feature when activated.

Radio-to-Radio communication. There is no infrastructure involved to make radios talk to each other. Generally radios can talk about 200,000 sq. ft in a building in simplex mode. Radios generally have more than one channel. Think of a channel as a department or work group.

Push to Talk. When using a radio, only one person can talk at a time per frequency. Push to Talk, release to listen.

Allows you to receive and transmit at the same time. Just as if you are on the telephone.

GLOSSARY OF FREQUENTLY USED TERMS


How long does the battery last?It depends on how often the radio is being used, but the average battery will last two to three years. The daily talk time also varies, but it should be able to get more than 8 hours of on time with average use.

How many watts do I need?Wattage determines the strength of your radio signal. Therefore, the more wattage a radio has, generally the longer distance it’s signal can travel and the clearer the transmission will be. The larger the job site, the more watts you should purchase. Please refer to the wattage and range of each radio before purchasing.

What are channels used for?Channels are used to send the actual communications. Each channel in an analog radio is tied to a particular frequency. You can assign a different channel to separate work groups within your organization. This way each work group can have their own channel to reduce disruptions to other departments.

How many channels do I need?One channel per work group is typical. Examples Managers, Maintenance, Security, Hospital Wings.

How far can a hand-held radio communicate?The distance a hand-held radio can communicate depends several factors. The most important factors for you to consider are: band (VHF or UHF), wattage, antenna type, and environment. Call 800-475-5852 for more information.

How many radios can be used together?There is no limit to the number of radios that can be used.

Will the Advanced Wireless Communication two-way radios communicate with other brands of radios?Yes, provided the other radios are programmed to the same frequency and codes. Please contact AWC for assistance.

What is the difference between a short and long antenna?A short (or stubby) antenna cuts your range by approximately 30%. The short antenna sometimes makes the radio easier to carry, and works well in locations where distance is not an issue.

What is a repeater?Repeaters can extend the range of communication by boosting the signal where the repeater is located so the signal may continue traveling. They can help get around obstacles or extend the range of communication beyond what is possible with only hand-held two-way radios.

What is a base station?A base station is typically a fixed piece of radio equipment that plugs into a standard electrical wall socket. It provides a cost effective all-in-one wireless communication solution for the fixed location communication points in your two-way radio system.

What is Narrowbanding, and what is the FCC requirement?The frequency spectrum for two way radio communications is full. In order to add more users in the same spectrum, the FCC has mandated that the bandwidth of each radio channel be cut in half (from 25 KHz to 12.5 KHz). All radios below 512Mhz must meet the narrowband requirement. Meeting the narrowband requirement can be as easy as a programming change, or may involve a system replacement. All of the radios we carry meet the new federal narrowband mandate.

What is the warranty on AWC radios?All Advanced Wireless Communication Radios come with an one year warranty from the date purchased, unless otherwise stated.

Is an FCC license required?Yes, FCC licenses are required for most business radio frequencies. Using common or default frequencies often means dealing with interference from others nearby who are using the same frequencies. Contact AWC at 800-475-5852 for more information.

What is a FCC License?The airwaves are a limited resource that need to be shared. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigns frequencies to prevent too many people from using the same channels at the same time.
