Introduction

To capture the current recruitment trends, JobsDB compiled a salary report, in conjunction with Acorn Organization Limited, based on the most updated information of job-seeking members. The report aims to compare the changes in salaries and bonuses between 2020 and 2021, examine the latest job-changing situation among job seekers in Hong Kong, and to understand their sentiment and reaction to several key topics related to employment in Hong Kong.

Scope and methodology

3. Datum pointPresent basic monthly salaries (excluding any bonuses, but including commission) of surveyed job seekers as of 1 March 2021 were recorded, and adjustment to basic monthly salaries compared with those in 2020 was captured based on job seekers’ declared adjustment.

4. Data collection methodThe survey was conducted by an online questionnaire. Job seekers were invited to fill in the questionnaire from 1 March to 21March 2021.

5. Data analysisSurveyed job seekers were requested to provide data of their basic monthly salaries as of 1 March 2021, recent salary adjustment, bonus, double pay, job status, job title, job function, and industry of their company.

The data was analyzed to determine the “arithmetic average” for salary adjustment and bonus received. To avoid extreme values, outliers with values that are more than three standard deviations from the mean were excluded for analysis.

Analysis was conducted to identify any differences that might exist in salary and bonus adjustment among 31 job functions. (Percentage of monthly salary adjustment in 2021 by position will only be shown if sufficient data is collected for calculation.)

Definition

WeightingTo provide a representative overall view, data is weighted according to distribution of industry as per government statistics.

Basic monthly salary (HK$):The present monthly salary excluding any bonuses (both guaranteed and non-guaranteed bonuses) but including commission. The present salary was recorded as of 1 March 2021.

Average:A mathematical average of a set of data values (basic monthly salaries, salary adjustments, and bonus received). To avoid extreme values, outliers with values that are more than three standard deviations from the mean were excluded from the analysis.

Page 30: 2021 Job Seeker Salary Survey Report

30

Basic monthly salary changes in 2021 Reasons for accepting a “below-average” salaryRespondents accept a “below-average” salary as they have quite a negative view about the employment situation – they fear difficulty in job seeking as a result of social instability (47%), they foresee limited options during the current economic downturn (46%), and they would rather stay put at their current company which has a lower chance of layoff (38%).

Difficulty in getting a new job / maintaining job security due to social instability

Limited choices in the face of an economic downturn

Company is relatively stable, hence a lower chance of layoff

Company did not implement other policies that lowered income

Enjoy the good relationship with current co-workers

Simply out of inertia to not go through job-seeking process

Satisfied with current workload / working hours

Interested in current job and think it may not be easy to find a similar one

Not certain about the ability to get a job with higher pay

Do not want to be seen as a job hopper on the resume

Have a sense of belonging to the current company and do not want to quit

Company provides other support (e.g., WFH, additional allowances, flexible working hours)

Willing to stay with the company as it is facing financial difficulties
