A message from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Thank you for joining us at Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2021 Sidney Myer Free Concert Series presented in association with the University of Melbourne and Arts Centre Melbourne.

As we begin a new year full of hope, the MSO’s annual Sidney Myer Free Concerts are the perfect way to reconnect with your fellow music lovers in ways we could not do so last year.

This year’s concerts feature magnificent music from around the world including works by Australia’s Ross Edwards, Joe Chindamo, Paul Stanhope, and Vanessa Perica who will debut and lead her world premiere of Love is a Temporary Madness.

After the events of 2020, I cannot wait to see our brilliant musicians back on stage performing for you all.

Michael Ullmer AO Chairman Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

A message from Arts Centre Melbourne

So much has happened to us all since Arts Centre Melbourne last welcomed the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to these popular free concerts in our much-loved Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Welcome back, and I hope you understand the need for our new seating arrangements as we all do our best to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment in which to listen to great music under the sky.

We are so excited that we’ve been able to program this iconic venue for our Live at the Bowl season and that the MSO can play such an important role. It’s great that once again performers and audiences can come together to experience live performances.

Enjoy, and I know you will all give the musicians an especially rousing cheer as they take up their instruments once again.

Claire Spencer Chief Executive Arts Centre Melbourne

A message from the Governor of Victoria

In 2020, we saw more clearly than ever the powerful impact of the arts. They escorted us from the challenging realities of physical distancing and gave us a sense of connection. But, as grateful as we were for innovation and technology, it is now a joy to once again come together for live musical performances.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Sidney Myer Free Concerts are embedded in more than 90 years of history. Now the MSO welcomes us back, with their return to live performance at this iconic outdoor venue, our much-loved Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Enjoy the music!

The Honourable Linda Dessau AC Governor of Victoria

Welcome

A message from Sidney B. Myer's Estate

Sidney Myer (1878–1934) loved classical music and was himself a violinist.

In 1927 when Sidney and Merlyn Myer were living temporarily in California, Sidney stood, ”thin as a reed, oblivious, eyes darting,” transfixed by the sounds of the Russian dances of his childhood being played in the open air in the local schoolyard.

Attending concerts at the famous Hollywood Bowl crystallised his idea to one day present free symphonic music in Melbourne out of doors. Sidney’s 1000 pounds donation to the struggling Melbourne Symphony Orchestra enabled six free concerts to be given in the Botanic Gardens between October 1929 and April 1930 at the height of the Depression.

These were the forerunners of the MSO’s Sidney Myer Free Concerts which have become permanent Summertime events at the unique Sidney Myer Music Bowl (itself funded by his Will) and officially opened on 12th February 1959 by the Prime Minister of Australia R.G. Menzies.

The Free Concerts and the Music Bowl are enduring gifts of Sidney to the people of Melbourne and Victoria. Sidney’s greatest pleasure was seeing people enjoy outdoor concerts. We hope that everyone tonight experiences that same musical joy.

Stephen Shelmerdine AM CM Chair of Trustees, Estate of the Late Sidney B. Myer

In association with

Welcome

A message from the Lord Mayor

When the Sidney Myer Charity Trust gifted the Myer Music Bowl to the people of Melbourne in 1959, it left an extraordinary legacy to be enjoyed by scores of music fans.

I am delighted that we can once again gather together to see live music at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, after the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) worked tirelessly to keep the music playing online in 2020.

The MSO has performed free concerts under the stars at the iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl for 62 years, and the beloved events are a key part of Melbourne’s rich cultural calendar.

The tradition continues over the coming weeks as the MSO presents its free summer concert series, featuring some of Australia’s most acclaimed musicians.

The City of Melbourne has a long and distinguished association with the MSO. In 2021, we are proud to support the Ears Wide Open events inviting audiences to discover more about the MSO’s music from world class artists, producers and composers working on stage and behind the scenes.

Enjoy this free concert series and revel in the majesty of the MSO in this iconic summer setting.

Sally Capp Lord Mayor of Melbourne

Melbourne, thanks for being like Sidney

Melbourne, for over 114 years, your generosity and support have helped the MSO bring the joy and wonder of live orchestral music

to our great city.

This annual concert series, made possible thanks to the vision and generosity of the late Sidney Myer, is a wonderful reminder of the power

and impact of giving.

As you enjoy tonight’s performance, please consider a donation to your MSO. The impact of your gift, as you see around you tonight, is truly

significant. Help us ensure we can continue to perform musical magic for generations to come.
