MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT FLY OUTBREAK – MARLESTON MOVEMENT OF PRODUCE

An outbreak of Mediterranean fruit fly was declared at Marleston on 19 February 2021 as a result of the detection of adult flies in traps deployed within the metropolitan area.

It is a requirement of other States and Territories that a Suspension Area is imposed for all fruit fly host produce which effectively removes the fruit fly free status of the area while the eradication effort is underway. Until the suspensions are lifted, any host produce grown or packed in the area must be treated and certified as meeting the import requirements of the destination state, including the area outside of the Suspension Area in SA, prior to departure and cannot be certified under ICA23. ICA23 Approved Properties in the Suspension Area can no longer supply an ICA23 accredited business.

The Suspension Area is the area within 7.5 km radius of the Outbreak centre and applies for; Tasmania, NT, Victoria, Queensland, and NSW, and The rest of South Australia outside of the Suspension Area;

There is also a 1.5km radius Outbreak Area from which produce must not be moved within under any circumstances unless it has been treated and certified.

Host produce may move from the South Australian Produce Markets (SAPM) under specific direction from the Chief inspector, Plant Health however interstate markets restrictions apply. (See website below, contact Plant Health Operations or the SAPM).

Host produce from within a Suspension Area (but not from within the 1.5km Outbreak Area) may move for local market within the area without restrictions – but must not be moved outside the 7.5 km area.

The anticipated earliest re-instatement date for fruit fly freedom (lifting of suspensions) will be 4 December 2021. Further events may however cause this date to change.

Key fruit fly treatments available for produce from within a Suspension Area include; Dipping/spraying of some hosts with Dimethoate under Biosecurity SA - Plant Health supervision or using

ICA01 / ICA02 accreditation. (Only some states – contact Plant Health Operations) Cold Storage (ICA07). Fumigation with Methyl Bromide (ICA04);

New ICA applications need to be made to PIRSA Biosecurity SA and allow up to 10 days for processing.

Please check whether you are within the 1.5km Outbreak Area or 7.5km Suspension Area using the attached map.
