2022 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide 3

Letter from the Camp Director Welcome to the 2022 camping season! I hope that this guide answers many questions you might have about camping at Camp McKee. Over the last several years the camp has undergone many different changes to the program, so it is important that you take note of the different parts of this guide—whether it is your first time attending or your 62nd.

A lot has changed over time, but Camp McKee still strives to offer a fantastic program alongside the traditional camping experience. Even if you are unable to attend a full week of camp, we urge you to visit one of the weeks and share your past experiences, while getting the chance to see camp again. The Dan Beard program has transformed into the Pioneer Scout program. This program allows first year Scouts to choose the amount of rank skills they would like to take, while getting to take merit badge classes of their choosing from the list of classes set aside for them, giving them a classic camp experience. Along with these program changes, we are also beginning to offer newer and more badges throughout the week. Past the rotation, we have restructured the STEM area merit badges to offer more and varied merit badges. The waterfront will now offer lifeguard certification throughout the day/week, an excellent opportunity for older scouts and even adult leaders If you’re just looking through our guide to decide if you want to come to Camp McKee—I invite you to give us a try. If you are a frequent flyer, I want to thank you for choosing to come back. Your support helps the camp and Scouts that attend it. If you have any questions, please feel free to email! Can’t wait to see you!

Yours in service, Mike Warman Camp Director [email protected]

Special Notes for 2022

• The Dan Beard program was replaced by the Pioneer program, an opportunity for new Scouts to leave with more merit badges, create the schedule they would like, and get the same camp experience as a seasoned Scout would, just with some more rank skills! For more information on this program see page 20

• There is a campsite deposit deadline this year of March 4. If you do not pay your campsite deposit

by then, your site may be given to another unit who has paid their deposit. • BSA HEALTH & MEDICAL FORMS (2019 printing) - Old forms will not be accepted • Regarding male and female troops sharing a campsite: Linked

troops (units that share a chartering organization) can share a campsite IF they can meet all of Scouting’s Barriers to Abuse.

• Regarding sharded leadership: if your unit can not provide two

deep leadership during your stay at summer camp and you must rely on an adult from a different unit to meet this requirement, the chartering partners of both units must approve the other unit’s leader to work with their Scouts.

The History of Camp McKee

The history of Camp McKee is rich in diversity. Native Americans occupied east central Kentucky before the early European settlers arrived. Grape Knob would have offered a good observation point from which Daniel Boone or a Shawnee could view the surrounding land. The courthouse in Mt. Sterling was built with stone mined from Grape Knob when it served as a rock quarry. McKee has a special sense of place.

In 1920, Mrs. Gertrude P. McKee began piecing together the land which would become known as Camp McKee. On March 31, 1945, seven tracts of land totaling more than 300 acres were deeded over to the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America by P.L. and Gertrude McKee for one dollar. The first official camporee was held in 1946, and for several years after, fall camporees were held. Additional parcels of land were added in the late 1950s, and the camp property now consists of more than 800 attractive acres.

In early April 1959, clearing and lumbering for the camp lake began, proceeding concurrently with work on the waterfront, activity areas, campsites, administration lodge, health lodge, trading post and Keeneland Dining Hall. The first camp ranger, Walt Ferrell, took up residence in his new home at the camp entrance early in 1960, and on June 10 of that year, the first of 1300 boys who were to use the facility during its initial summer camping season arrived.

The Pioneer Mountain Trail was hiked and laid out by Scouts in late 1960 and early 1961. The chapel and picnic area were the next items built. The chapel was dedicated on June 28, 1962 with churches in the Blue Grass Council donating nearly half of the funds for the project. In 1976, five more campsites, showers, and a pedestrian bridge were built. During the same era, the OA Building was designed and constructed.

On March 31, 2001, a groundbreaking took place, celebrating a new season of construction at Camp McKee. The new construction began with a new dining facility named Stamler Hall, built to seat about 350 people and sport a “state of the art” kitchen. Also constructed were Karrick Retreat Lodge, a new climbing tower, a C.O.P.E. Course, and a Handicraft Lodge.

Named after the late P. L. McKee and Gertrude McKee (the original land donors), Camp McKee has been serving the Scouting community for over 70 years. Located just 8 miles from Interstate 64, near its junction with Interstate 75, McKee is easily accessible to the entire Eastern United States. McKee’s location puts us within minutes of the Red River Gorge, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and Cave Run Lake.

Camp McKee is proud to be a Nationally Accredited Camp by the Boy Scouts of America. Don’t miss out on the exciting opportunity to learn new skills or hone existing talents at Camp McKee this summer!

Vehicle Use Policy Includes ALL motorized vehicles, on and off road, licensed or unlicensed.

1. No motor vehicles will be permitted beyond the parking lot except at the discretion of the Camp Ranger, Camp Master, the Blue Grass Council Scout Executive or his designee.

2. Vehicles with handicapped permits may only be used to transport the disabled Scouts or Scouters for which they are intended.

3. Only one vehicle will be allowed to travel to the campsite to deliver the unit's camping equipment. They must then return to the parking lot. All gear and equipment must be unloaded at the roadside. No vehicles are to be driven into the campsite.

4. It is a violation of National BSA policy for drivers under 18 years of age to drive to, from, or on the McKee Scout Reservation.

5. Vehicles in unauthorized areas will be towed at the owner's expense.

9. Personal small motorized vehicles (golf carts, gators, mules, etc.) used to transport disabled Scouts or Scouters must be approved upon arrival. The disabled Scout or Scouter must present evidence of his/her disability at that time. The vehicle must be inspected by the Camp Ranger, or his designee, prior to use on the McKee Scout Reservation property. They may only be operated by a licensed driver, 18 years or older, approved by the Camp Ranger or his designee.

10. Decisions by the Camp Ranger or his designee are final.

Camp Security

Identification Everyone in attendance at the camp must wear identification that signifies legitimate participation in the camping program. Wristbands will be the method used at Camp McKee. Any time a person is spotted in camp without either a visitor's name tag or camp participation identification, that person should be escorted to the office to sign in (and so staff personnel may determine why that person is on camp property).

Visitor Policy Visiting hours are 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM. All visitors to the camp must stop at the administration building office and sign in. A guest book for this purpose will be maintained and identification will be required. A special visitor name tag will be given that will identify the person as a legitimate visitor. Upon conclusion of their visit, guests will sign out so that camp administrators will know who is on camp property at all times. Only registered youth and adults that are listed on the summer camp roster may stay overnight. Visitors will be given identification upon check in and must wear this identification while on camp property. Visitor meal tickets can be purchased at the Trading Post.

**Adult leaders, please inform your visitors—prior to coming to camp—that open-toed shoes are NOT permitted at Camp McKee and vehicles are not allowed past the parking areas. **

Provisional Scout Program

This is not actually a specific program, but an opportunity for Scouts to attend summer camp without their troop or crew, or who choose to attend an additional week without their unit.

Scouts will be assigned to a temporary troop while at camp. Depending upon the number of provisional Scouts we have register, this temporary troop will either be an already existing troop that is attending during the Scouts requested week, or one lead by two or more adult camp staff members. Scouts will be expected to follow all rules set by their “adopted troop” while at camp (i.e. eating with the troop, campsite inspections, etc.) Scouts may request a specific troop if they know of another troop that will be going during the Scout’s requested week. This request will need to be approved by the “temporary” Scoutmaster before the Scout will be assigned to that troop.

Regular deadline dates and summer camp fees apply. A $50 deposit is due with the application and the remaining balance will be due on May 6, 2022 with a copy of your current medical form. Please send all applications and payments to the council office.

Scholarships Financial aid is available. To be considered for financial aid, completed Campership Forms (pg. 27) must be received in the council office by April 8, 2022.

Health & Safety

Required Paperwork for ALL PARTICIPANTS 1) Annual Health and Medical Record - Parts A, B, and C (form updated in 2019) 2) Immunization record or waiver form 3) Proof of Insurance Card Medical examinations for camp attendance are required for ALL campers, both youth and adults. The current medical form can be found online at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/ . Medical forms should be updated annually and not expire during your stay at summer camp. Make sure you are using the form that has “2019 Printing” in the lower right hand corner - old forms will not be accepted per BSA policy - no exceptions. Part C is the physical exam that is required for participants in any event that exceeds 72 consecutive hours (summer camp). Part C is to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider: physician (M.D. or D.O.), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. The current official BSA form must be used. Any other health form from any other agency is not acceptable. The form must be signed by the parent or guardian. The immunization record or an immunization exemption must be included. Any Scout or Scouter who does not have these forms properly filled out and signed will NOT be allowed to stay on Camp McKee property during summer camp. The Health Officers recommend that in order to speed up the check-in process, the health forms be three hole punched and placed in a 3-ring binder - Leaders first followed by the Scouts alphabetically by last name. This is also a good way for you to keep up with who has and has not given you their forms.

CPAP Machine Policy Our campsites do not have power, and only a few of them (campsites 13, 12, and 4) can reach power if enough extension cords are brought to camp, which is not guaranteed to work. We recommend bringing a power source to camp to power your machine, or visiting www.cpap.com to purchase a battery powered CPAP machine. If this is unavailable, you may fill out a request form to stay in campsite 3, which has power. This application does not guarantee space in the campsite for your entire troop unless other exceptions are needed. Please plan accordingly. We have restricted the use of campsite 3 to those Scouts or leaders who have a physical need for that campsite. A leader’s need for electricity is not considered a necessity for your entire troop to occupy campsite 3. If granted, you may be asked to supervise other Scouts staying in that campsite and your troop must still follow two-deep leadership back in their campsite.

Tick Awareness Plan Ticks transmit various disease-causing agents from animals to humans. Ticks are found at McKee Scout Reservation. Most people do not feel a tick biting and so campers should check regularly for the presence of ticks on their person. All participants on the day of arrival will be cautioned and directed as to the risk of tick borne disease, and the precautions and procedures to be followed. Signs will be posted throughout Camp McKee with information about ticks. All embedded ticks are to be removed by Health Lodge personnel and preserved in properly labeled specimen containers (any such incidents will be properly logged according to pre-existing procedures). All exposed persons will receive written information pertaining to the exposure and appropriate follow-up care. (For youth, the information will be provided to the responsible adult).

Pre-Registration & Required Paperwork

Online Registration The Blue Grass Council uses the Doubleknot host system for summer camp registration. When you complete & return the reservation form (pg. 25) your unit will be entered into the online system. Once we have entered your reservation, your designated summer camp contact will receive an email with logon information. All correspondence regarding summer camp will go to this designated representative. The Doubleknot system lets you register your Scouts and leaders, assign Scouts to merit badge classes, view reports and make payments online. When you log on to the system, everything is done in real time so you will know if a merit badge class is full while you are online and can immediately choose an alternate. You do not have to use the online system, but be aware that mailed in information is entered as time is available. It may be a day or two after it is received, before it can be entered. If you have questions or need assistance with the online registration, please contact Susan ([email protected] ) at the council office.

Required Information for Online Registration The following information needs to be submitted to the council office as soon as possible.

1. Adult leader contact information including a daytime phone number and email address 2. Complete Roster - the following information is REQUIRED FOR EACH PARTICIPANT, if we do not

receive complete information, your troop will not be entered into the system. a. Full name as it appears on your charter roster b. Age c. Rank d. Scout t-shirt sizes, Leaders can choose to pre-order shirts for a fee e. Dietary and/or physical restrictions f. Emergency contact name and phone number

3. Notification of early arrival on Saturday if applicable Once your roster with all required information has been entered online, you will be able to register for classes once they become available. Note: The t-shirt order deadline is May 6 - any size received after this date can not be guaranteed - try to get your new Scouts registered by this date. ALL Troops/Crews should mail a copy of the following items to the Blue Grass Council Office no later than 14 days (2 weeks) before arrival:

4. Completed Health Forms (Parts A, B and C) for ALL Scouts AND Scouters—including adults who will be arriving after check-in or at a later date. Make sure you are using the updated 2019 form.

5. Unit swim classification record - must include classification for EVERYONE on your roster 6. Merit badge class choices if not previously submitted 7. Consent for special activity form for Scouts (original signed copies) 8. (Out of council units only) Documentation from your home lodge for any Scouts you want called out

Check-in Appointments Units can check in by appointment to speed up the registration process. You should request an appointment time when you submit the final payment form (due May 6) to the council office, or contact Susan Stone [email protected] at the council office (859-231-7811 x-300). Check in begins at 1:00 pm Sunday. After May 6th, if you have not requested a time, you will receive an email with an online scheduling link so you can sign up for any remaining time slots. If you fail to schedule a time before camp or miss your time, you will be worked in to the next available open time slot.

2022 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide 13

Arrival and Check-in Procedures Please plan on arriving BEFORE your scheduled check in time on SUNDAY.

1. When you arrive at camp, you will be directed to park in the lot below the administration building. One vehicle per unit will be allowed to drive to the campsite for unloading the troop’s gear. Do not drive into the campsite; unload gear at the road. Troop/crew trailers may remain at the campsite, but vehicles must be unhitched and moved to the parking lot.

2. A troop guide will meet you and your Scouts at the parking lot. They will then lead your troop/crew through the check-in/orientation process. Leaders will be directed to the administration building for check-in. You should bring your registration materials, troop/crew roster and the balance of any fees due, with you at this time.

3. After initial registration check-in, your unit will be taken for medical checks. Please have your medical forms (if not turned in previously) ready at this time.

4. Once medical checks are completed, your troop guide will take you to your campsite where you can quickly change into swim trunks if needed. Changing should take no more than 15 minutes - this is not the time to unpack your gear - there will be plenty of time for that later. The troop guide will then take you to the waterfront for the safety talk and swim tests.

5. Once swim tests are done, your troop/crew will go to the dining hall for orientation and then return to the campsite to set up camp. Your troop guide will return at the appropriate time to take your troop/crew to dinner. Field uniforms (“Class A”) should be worn for all flag retreat ceremonies and dinner.

6. After dinner, one adult leader (Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor) from each troop/crew is required to attend the opening leaders' meeting. It is recommended that one youth leader (Senior Patrol Leader or Crew President) attend the leaders’ meeting as well.

All Scouts that have not been to Camp McKee are required to take part in a camp orientation tour, which will meet after dinner as well.

Saturday Early Arrival We recognize that, due to the distance involved, some troops/crews will need to arrive at camp on Saturday. If you wish to do this, the following rules apply: **You will still be expected to check-in at your scheduled time on Sunday.

1. There will be an additional fee ($2.00 per person), for all members of your troop/crew who arrive early. This fee must be submitted to the council office, with the final payment, by May 6th. The council office will notify the Camp Director that you will be arriving early.

2. Your campsite assignment will be posted in the Administration Building. Please stop and verify your campsite and if you will be sharing that site with another troop. All campsites are numbered and will be marked, so please be sure to set up in the correct site. If your troop/crew sets up in the wrong campsite, you will be required to move to your correct site on Sunday afternoon, no exceptions.

3. The management of Camp McKee reserves the right to put more than one troop/crew per site, if the need arises. Remember a Scout is kind. If, upon arrival, you see that there is another troop/crew sharing your assigned site, please be courteous and do not set up over the entire site. Campsite occupancy is based on two person tent occupancy (this includes leaders! (if a leader wants to have their own tent - they should bring their own). If upon the arrival of other troops/crews on Sunday there is insufficient space, you will be required to move some of your troop/crew gear to make space for the others.

4. There will not be any staff members or camp leadership personnel on hand to assist you on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Scouts should not enter any program areas - swimming and boating are not allowed. Scouts should not be ‘roaming around’ unsupervised during your early time here, especially after dark.

5. Please plan on arriving AFTER noon on Saturday as staff may not be finished preparing camp for next week.

14 2022 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide

Check-out Procedures You must complete a campsite check-out inspection before leaving camp. Each unit will be accompanied by a staff representative that will examine your campsite for any damage. If they find everything satisfactory, your security deposit will be returned to you before you leave. Your security deposit can be kept if the camp staff finds sufficient evidence that rules have been broken or damage done. If damages exceed the security deposit, your unit will be billed for the remainder of the cost of damages. At this time, you will also receive a check-out packet containing patches, completion records and medical forms. Important Note: It is the responsibility of the unit to verify that all medical forms are in the packet. The council does not maintain medical records for any camp or event once the event is over. All medical documents left behind will be destroyed.

Water Carnival Do you like water? Do you like fun? Come join us every Thursday at 7:00 pm and compete in a variety of events in our Water Carnival. We encourage all campers to come down to the waterfront area and take part in the excitement! Look for the all new waterfront attractions—including inflatables! Volunteer Opportunities Scouters, are you tired of sitting around camp while everyone else is out having a good time? If you would like to help teach a merit badge, lifeguard or help the Camp Ranger, we can always use another set of hands. The Pioneer Scout area can usually use volunteers to help with the instruction and evaluation of Pioneer Scouts. Just let us know at the Leaders’ Meeting on Sunday night where you would like to help. The meeting will be held on the back porch of the dining hall immediately following dinner. Adult Leader Training Opportunities

Aquatics Supervisor BSA Swimming & Water Rescue AND Aquatics Supervisor BSA Paddle Craft Safety. This course is required if you want to take your troop/crew on any swimming or watercraft type outing. The class will be offered from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday at the waterfront. You must be 16 or older to participate.

Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. The Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat courses are held at the

waterfront on Monday. This course is a must for adult leaders to ensure that troops/crews have a safe year-round aquatics program.

The following adult training programs will be offered during summer camp. Times will be announced

during the Sunday night leaders’ meeting. • Climb on Safely • Leave No Trace introduction course • Trek Safety • BSA STEM Orientation

Vespers and Opening Campfire Sunday night at 8:00 pm there will be an interdenominational vespers service. Following the service will be a campfire program hosted by the camp staff. Camp Commissioners Your campsite is the base from which the program at camp operates. A camp commissioner is available to each troop/crew to help it develop and carry out a full and balanced camping program. The primary purpose of our commissioner is to help the Scoutmaster/Crew Advisor help the troop/crew with the camp program. The camp commissioner has a sound understanding of Scouting's principles, the patrol method and the traditional Scouting skills. Your camp commissioner will also assist in campsite inspection coordination. This program is an exciting opportunity for experienced adult Scouters. We have openings for Scouters to act as an assistant commissioner each week. Participants will be official members of the McKee camp staff and will be available to host Scoutmaster coffee breaks, share leadership skills (as well as a few stories), etc. Senior Patrol Leader Activities Being the senior patrol leader at summer camp is a very challenging and important role. In appreciation for your SPL’s hard work we will be offering a variety of special activities for them and leaders to take part in. Examples include SPL/Scoutmaster shoot off, night time rappelling, and a special SPL gift.

Adult Leader’s Luncheon Thursday during lunch, Blue Grass Council will recognize all Scouters for their commitment to the Scouting program with a luncheon. All Scouters in camp can attend the luncheon at no charge. This is our way of saying thank you for the time you give to Scouting. The luncheon will be held at Keeneland Hall at noon. At the Monday morning leaders’ meeting, an adult leader from each troop should sign up all Scouters who will be at the luncheon.

Hammock Safety Camping in hammocks has gained in popularity over the past 10 years. More camping equipment manufacturers are offering hammock-style tents as a way of reducing the “footprint” on the camping area. This is helpful from a Leave No Trace standpoint. However, hammocks are not without their risks.

GENERAL INFORMATION The following hammock safety points should be taken into consideration:

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maximum and minimum hanging distances (the distances between solid supports such as trees).

• Hang hammocks in secure locations, such as to trees or solid posts. Never attach a hammock to any object that could move, such as vehicle bumpers or trailers.

• Securely fasten and check all knots prior to getting into a hammock.

• Never “stack” hammocks one above another.

• Hammocks should not be hung such that the lowest point is more than 3 feet above the ground. Severe injuries have resulted from elevated falls.

• Do not hang a hammock above water, including at a waterfront, lake, river, or stream.

• Never swing or stand in a hammock. Falls from hammocks can cause serious or fatal injuries.

• Do not use a hammock that has frayed or damaged ropes. Use only the manufacturer’s replacement ropes.

• Do not put more weight into a hammock than recommended by the manufacturer.

If you are using solid, living trees, special care should be taken not to damage the outer bark. Some hammock-tents have wide bands for securing them around living trees. These bands of material help to spread out the stress of the hammock-tent.

Order of the Arrow Activities at Summer Camp The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s National Honor Society, and Kawida Lodge #480 is the Order of the Arrow Lodge in the Blue Grass Council. All year long, OA members work on service projects at Camp McKee, and the lodge holds most of its activities here. Every week at summer camp there are special activities hosted by the lodge, most of which are restricted to OA members. Check your summer camp schedule for the following events: OA Brotherhood Conversion (weekly) All Ordeal members of the Ordeal of the Arrow are invited to become Brotherhood members during summer camp. The Brotherhood preparation sessions will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday after lunch on the side porch of the dining hall. The Brotherhood Ceremony will have the members meet at the dining hall porch at 9:30 PM, while the attendees may go to the ceremony grounds at the same time. Additional fee of $20 for a new sash applies. Payments are to be paid at the Trading Post. OA Callout Ceremony (weekly) The weekly callout ceremony will be Friday at the closing campfire. Out of council units, please see note below. A Message to all Lodge Members The Order of the Arrow is a service organization, and we are always looking for a way to serve our camps. While at camp, the lodge challenges you to help out in any way you can whether it be to work on a camp improvement project, help a new Scout learn a skill, or to just come out to one of the ceremonies and watch. Any way that you can serve is a way to show your support to the Order of the Arrow. Out of Council Units If your troop is not part of the Blue Grass Council, then you must do your Ordeal or Brotherhood with the lodge and council with which you were elected. However, if you have any Scouts that were elected to the Order of the Arrow, they may be called out at the Friday night ceremony. Proper documentation from your home lodge must be presented to the OA Camp Coordinator. Kawida Lodge extends this courtesy for recognition purposes only.

20 2022 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide

Merit Badges and Advancement Opportunities Advancement is one of the primary reasons youth remain in Scouting. Many merit badges cannot be completed during program time alone; some require extra "homework". Scoutmasters are encouraged to consider the amount of work required and only sign Scouts up for no more than four merit badge sessions.

Pioneer Scouts (First Year Campers) Pioneer Scouts are new Scouts or Scouts attending summer camp for the first time. Camp McKee now offers a schedule specific to Pioneer Scouts. This Pioneer schedule has been built around the core skills and requirements needed to complete the Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks. The schedule offers skill classes for each rank and a variety of merit badges that can usually be completed at camp with no prerequisites. These classes were chosen so Pioneer Scouts can maximize their completion success. Scouts may take any combination of merit badge and rank skill classes offered on the Pioneer Schedule. Customize the schedule to the Scout—if a Scout has completed Tenderfoot Rank before they attend camp, they do not need to take that skill class at camp. Scouts should not sign up for merit badges outside of those listed below unless approved by the camp or program director. Regarding Swimming merit badge, if a Scout has issues passing a swimmer’s test, we encourage them to either sign up for instructional swim or another merit badge. As for evening program, check out the Evening Program for when Pioneer Scouts can visit all the areas and participate in events designed for them and them only. ADDITIONAL FEES: The Space Exploration class registration fee of $15 covers the cost of a rocket/engine kit. This fee is charged at the time of registration before units arrive at camp. Kits will be provided to every Scout that pre-registers for this class. Leatherworking also requires a kit, however, Scouts have the option of choosing one of many kits. These kits usually cost between $10 and $15 and must be purchased at the trading post once the Scout gets to camp. It will be the responsibility of the Scout to choose and purchase a kit for this class.

Merit Badge Requirement Details* Merit badge classes are “first come, first served,” so sign up for them as soon as possible! Classes are capped and may turn away Scouts as needed to ensure that the class is being taught as safely as possible and that all the Scouts will complete the merit badge. Some of the merit badges offered at camp have requirements that cannot be completed at camp. These requirements will need to be done either before or after camp for the merit badge to be completed. With new merit badges being added to the schedule, we will be posting an updated class catalog with recommended ages and pre-requisites, separate from the leader’s guide, on the summer camp page of the bgbsa.org website in February!

2022 Campership Application DUE TO THE BLUE GRASS COUNCIL SERVICE CENTER BY APRIL 8, 2022 - Use one form per family

Every Scout and Venturer deserves the opportunity to attend Camp McKee this summer. The Blue Grass Council would like to remove as many obstacles facing Scouts and Venturers that might attend camp as possible, including the camp fee. We realize that there are a few Scouts and Venturers in our council who truly cannot afford the fee. In many cases, these are the same youth for whom camp attendance would be the most beneficial. Therefore, the council has established the campership fund to help those Scouts and Venturers who desire the camp experience but cannot afford it. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors, it is your responsibility to determine if any Scouts in your troop or crew will have difficulty paying the camp fee. Through the applicant’s parents, determine what portion of the fee the Scout or Venturer is able to pay. Decide if the troop or crew needs to have money-earning projects to help any members of the troop or crew. Then complete a campership application for any Scout or Venturer needing assistance.

Campership applications must be completed and delivered to the council service center before April 8, 2022. The committee will meet and determine the amount to be awarded per Scout. There is a limited amount of funding for camperships that will be divided according to the number of requests that are received on time. Forms received after the deadline date are subject to funding availability. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors will be notified of the campership awards soon after committee approval. Please use your best judgement in applying for these camperships.

Camperships will be awarded based on Scout/Venturer and troop/crew participation in the Friends of Scouting and popcorn sales programs. Please complete the entire form. All information will be kept confidential.

Unit Swim Classification Record (copy as needed)

This is the individual’s swim classification as of this date. Any change in status after this date (i.e., non-swimmer to beginner or beginner to swimmer) would require a reclassification test by the Camp Aquatics Director.

SPECIAL NOTE: When swim tests are conducted away from camp or at the point of activity, the Aquatics Director shall at all times reserve the authority to review or retest all participants to ensure that standards have been maintained.

Unit Swim Classification Record Page 2

The swim classification of individuals participating in a Boy Scouts of America activity is a key element in both Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. The swim classification tests should be renewed annually, preferably at the beginning of each outdoor season. Traditionally, the swim classification test has only been conducted at a long-term summer camp. However, there is no restriction that this be the only place the test can be conducted. It may be more useful to conduct the swim classification prior to a unit going to summer camp. All persons participating in BSA aquatics are classified according to swimming ability. The classification tests and test procedures have been developed and structured to demonstrate a skill level consistent with the circumstances in which the individual will be in the water (e.g., the swimmer’s test demonstrates the minimum level of swimming ability for recreational and instructional activity in a confined body of water with a maximum 12-foot depth).

Units must choose one of the following options to administer the swim classification tests

OPTION A (at camp)

The swim classification test is completed the first day by camp aquatics ersonnel.

OPTION B (Council conducted/council controlled)

The council controls the swim classification process by predetermined dates, locations, and approved personnel to serve as test administrators. When the unit goes to summer camp, each individual will be issued a buddy tag under the direction of the camp aquatics director for use at the camp.

OPTION C (At unit level with council-approved aquatics resource people):

The swim classification test done at a unit level should be conducted by one of the following council- approved resource people: Aquatics Instructor, BSA; Aquatics Cub Supervisor; BSA Lifeguard; BSA Swimming & Water Rescue; or other lifeguard, swimming instructor, etc. When the unit goes to summer camp, each individual will be issued a buddy tag under the direction of the camp aquatics director for use at the camp.

Swimmer’s Test:

- Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. - Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes:

Sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen or crawl - Swim 25 yards using an easy resting back stroke. - The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. - After completing the swim, rest by floating

Beginner’s Test:

- Jump feet first into water over the head in depth then level off - Swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, - Resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Troop Swimming at Camp: Troops may conduct their own swimming sessions, but the troop must provide two-deep

leadership and their own BSA Lifeguard. Troops may sign up for swimming times at the Senior Patrol Leader meetings.

I understand that travel to, from, and participation in the Boy Scout activities offered through the Blue Grass Council,

BSA, involves a certain degree of risk that could result in injury or death. In consideration of the benefits to be derived

and after carefully considering the risk involved and in view of the fact that the Boy Scouts of America is an organization

in which membership is voluntary and having full confidence that precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of my

son/daughter, I have given _________________________________________________ (son/daughter) consent to participate in

those activities, and waive all claims I may have against Boy Scouts of America, Blue Grass Council, activity or trip

leaders and coordinator(s), all employees, volunteers, sponsors or vendors associated with the activity. In the event of

illness or accident in the course of such activity, I request that measures be instituted, without delay, as the judgement of

medical personnel dictates.

SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS FORM RETURN THIS FORM TO THE COUNCIL OFFICE NO LATER THAN 12 DAYS BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL AT CAMP

Unit # _________________________ Week # _______________________ Campsite #___________________ Allergies and special diets are a common concern of our campers. Our food service is very experienced with accommodating most diets including food allergies, religious restrictions, and other health-related diets. We are happy to work to accommodate any diet; however, we require this form be submitted at least two weeks prior to arrival at camp. NOTE: Special diet requests are for food allergies, religious restrictions, and other health-related needs only. Requests should not be made for food preferences, personal taste, or for "picky eaters": the camp cannot accommodate these requests and they will not be honored.
