1.0 Description1.1 The 3M™ Fiber Distribution Unit Rack Mount

8423 is a patch panel designed to provide termination of up to 24 simplex and up to 48 duplex optical fibers in one unit of rack space. The panel is mounted on glides that permit drawer-like movement of the panel within the rack. The glides have built-in adjustable stops that allow the installer to select flush or mid-mounting of the panel in its returned position. The units offer networking and fiber distribution from the vault or wiring closet to the user’s terminal equipment. The patch panel’s splice or slack storage area is used for the riser or outside plant cables entering the building, pigtails and pigtail splices. This area is enclosed by a detachable cover. The units are sold empty allowing the installer to customize it using separately purchased adapter plates. Adapter plates are available with most common adapter styles including ST, SC, LC and FC in both multimode and single-mode, simplex and duplex. Preconfigured units including pigtails and splice trays are also available. 3M also provides field mount connectors of all types and cable assemblies to complete the interconnect installation. With the addition of the 3M™ Port Expander Kit 8423 EXP, the unit can be expanded at any time to a two-rack unit size for 48 simplex port or high density 96 duplex port capacity.

4.0 Mounting the Patch Panel4.1 The panel is designed to fit a standard 19"

relay rack using one unit of rack space or 1.75 inches. For 23" rack mounting, an additional 3M™ 23" Rack Mounting Kit 8423-BKT is required.

4.2 While supporting the unit in place, loosely install the four 10-32 Phillips mounting screws. Slide the unit all the way forward until the glides hit their stop position. Allow the unit’s weight to rest on the glides and tighten the screws. This procedure is necessary to align the glides for smooth operation.

4.3 The unit comes adjusted such that the coupling

plates will be flush with the rack when the unit is in its returned position. Optionally, the unit can be recessed in the rack so that the jumper organizer tray is flush to the rack. Loosen the internal adjustment screws approximately 1/4 inch. Push the 8423 unit back into the rack positioning the front edge of the jumper tray flush to the rack. Tighten the adjustment screws to retain the unit within the glides.

5.0 Field Cable Preparation and Placement

Note: Leave at least 5' (1.5 m) of field cable slack outside of the patch panel. In case a fiber is broken off inadvertently, the slack allows the cable to be pulled farther into the unit. Slack also allows for future rearrangements.

5.1 Prepare Cable for Tight Buffered Cables:

5.1.1 Slit and install the oval cable entry grommet over the end of the cable. Strip approximately 8' (2.5 m) of the cable’s outer sheath(s) exposing the 900 µm buffered fibers. Cut back the central strength member leaving approximately 4" (10 cm) protruding from the cable’s outer sheath.

Page 8: 20341-CMD 78-8140-6521-1 Fiber Distribution Rack · 3 78-8140-6521-1-C 1.0 Description 1.1 The 3M™ Fiber Distribution Unit Rack Mount 8423 is a patch panel designed to provide termination

8 78-8140-6521-1-C

5.1.2 Installing Tight Buffered Cables: Install the grommet in the oval cable port, then position the cable clamp around the cable. Insert the central strength member into the central member clamp at the same time. The central strength member will attach to the inside of the panel for tight buffered cable. Close the cable clamp onto the cable outer sheath. Make sure the cable is held in place securely but not tight enough to compress the fibers. Tighten the central strength member clamp screw to retain the central strength member.

5.2 Prepare Cable for Loose Tube Cables:

5.2.1 Slit and install the oval cable entry grommet over the end of the cable. Strip approximately 8' (2.5 m) of the cable’s outer sheath(s) exposing the buffer tubes and central strength member. Cut back the central strength member leaving approximately 6" (15 cm) protruding from the cable’s outer sheath.

5.2.2 Installing Loose Tube Cables: Install the grommet in the oval cable port, then position the cable clamp around the cable. Insert the central strength member into the central member clamp at the same time. The central strength member will attach to the outside of the panel for Loose Tube Cables. Close the cable clamp onto the cable outer sheath. Make sure the cable is held in place securely but not tight enough to compress the fibers. Tighten the central strength member clamp screw to retain the central strength member.

978-8140-6521-1-C

5.3 Secure the cable to the relay rack: To perform properly, the cable must be secured to the rack a short distance (about 2' or 0.6 meters) above the unit. The cable must be routed such that the drawer can glide through its intended motion without putting undue stress on the cable. A properly installed cable will have a bend radius no smaller than 10 cable diameters. When the panel is drawn forward, the cable will pass above the glide rails and below any equipment mounted above. Place the supplied spiral tubing around the cable jacket to protect the cable from damage.

6.0 Fiber LayoutNote: Fiber layout is at the discretion of the user or installer as long as the minimum bending radius specified by the cable manufacturer is not violated. Suggested layouts for both the fiber and the pigtails and direct field termination are shown.

6.1 Direct Termination If the field fibers are to be directly terminated using field mountable connectors, follow the instructions of the connector manufacturer.

6.2 Pigtail Splicing – If the field fibers are to be spliced to pigtails proceed as follows:

6.2.1 Trim buffer tubes leaving approximately 4" (10 cm) protruding from the cables sheath.

6.2.2 Cut a 30" (76 cm) piece of 3M™ Fiber Transition Tubing 2520 and slip over the 250 µm fiber. Repeat for each buffer tube.

6.2.3 Slip the end of the 3M Fiber Transition Tubing 2520 over the end of the incoming cable buffer tube.

6.2.4 Temporarily install the 3M™ Fiber Splice Organizer Tray 2522 in its final location. Place transportation tubing in the fiber clips around and into the splice tray. Follow the instructions supplied with the splice organizer tray.

7.0 Splicing using the 3M™ Fiber Splice Organizer Tray 2524-SR7.1 Ensure that splice holders are oriented as

shown.

Note: If splice holder inserts are not oriented as shown remove and reposition as needed.

7.2 Carefully slide protective tubing over exposed fibers.

7.3 Position protective tubes into tray’s guide slots at desired location(s).

7.4 Secure protective tubes with supplied cable ties. Color code per company practice.

7.5 Store fiber slack as mandated by company practice around the outer race track of splice tray.

Note: Store sufficient slack to allow for multiple splicing attempts in the event of damage.

7.6 Splice per company practice and install heat shrink tube.

Both holder tabs face the same direction

7.8.4 Ensure that locking tabs on both front sides of tray are locked to prevent trays from hinging open inadvertently.

8.0 Pigtail Layout and Splicing8.1 Select a Pigtail: Use a 6'-6" (2 m) pigtail or cut a 13' (4 m)

jumper in half. Put a tag on the pigtail near the connector indicating the number of the fiber in the cable it is to be spliced to.

8.2 Trim the Pigtail to the Correct Length: Holding the connector near the adapter it

will be connected to, route the pigtail in the vacant clips as per sketch. Cut the pigtail at an appropriate length to reach the splice point.

3M™ Fiber Splice Organizer Tray 2522 shown

8.3 Splice the Field Fiber to the Pigtail: The pigtail end and fiber must be stripped and

cleaned for the splicing operation. Follow the splicing procedures of the splice manufacturer. When the splice is completed, route the field fiber loosely in the fiber clips, and carefully lay the splice in the slot of the organizer. Route the pigtail loosely in the fiber clips and insert the connector as described in step 8.4 below.

8.4 Insert the connector of the pigtail into the connector adapter:

Remove the coupling’s dust caps and clean the inside with a lint-free swab or pipe cleaner dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Blow with dry air, replace right dust cap, then remove the dust cap from the corresponding connector.

Clean the connector ferrule with a lint free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Blow with dry air. Visually inspect the adapter and connector for cleanliness. Insert the connector. Mark the fiber assignment on the internal the fiber assignment label.

Note: Carefully follow safety, health, and disposal infor-mation on container label or Material Safety Data Sheet for isopropyl alcohol being used.

Pigtail Layout

3M™ Fiber Splice Organizer Tray 2522 shown

9.0 Jumper Layout Notes:

9.1 Clean and install the jumper connector into the appropriate adapter. Dress the jumper fiber into the black organizing rings to minimize tight bending stress or tension. Jumpers can approach the unit from the left or the right side. Jumpers should be organized on the rack to provide sufficient slack to allow movement of the panel in its glides.

9.2 Mark the jumper designation on the external fiber assignment label.

• Do not insert connectors into equipment at either end until the jumper is secured on the cable racks.

• Do not remove dust caps from either end of the cable assemblies until immediately prior to connection to the equipment.

• If cable assemblies (jumpers) are to be pulled through enclosed conduit, use proper procedures to protect connector ends from damage and protect the cable from high tensile loads.

• It is recommended that cable assemblies be laid in open raceways where possible.

• Follow building fire codes when specifying cable jacket materials for the application intended.
