COURSE DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the 53rd Annual Riley Pediatric Conference. This continuing educational meeting addresses clinical best practices across a broad array of primary care pediatrics from the care of infants through adolescence. The two day event will offer plenary presentations on Infectious Diseases, Health Care Systems, and Care Coordination programs for children with special health care needs. Hot Topic Lectures will follow each morning's plenary with talks regarding, kids coping with chronic medical illnesses, pediatric allergy to medicine, eating disorders in children and adolescents, pediatric dermatology, ophthalmology, and hypertension. The afternoon Interactive Lectures will feature topics on sports injuries, urology, high risk new-born follow-up, management of office emergencies, endocrinology, family community resources, and more.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:

Recognize the challenges of treating/preventing serious infectious diseases

Identify common mental health comorbidities in the children with chronic medical illness

Discern drug allergies and when to refer to an allergist

Assess for medical complications related to eating disorders in children and adolescence

Distinguish relevant “drivers” of authentic/quality care coordination for children with special health care needs/complex conditions and how to carry out “Model Phases” of a care coordination intervention to assist families

Identify risk factors to developing sports injuries, especially overuse syndromes and learn when to refer

Evaluate infants with feeding difficulties due to medical complexities

Discuss human-centered design principles and how they can inform care coordination programs for children with special health care needs

Explain recent developments in diagnosis and treatment of dermatologic disorders in children

Determine if patients are eligible for new research trials, targeted hypertension telemedicine, and/or multidisciplinary clinics involving pediatric nephrology

Recount various healthcare systems around the world, and the relative tradeoffs inherent to them

Establish strategies and resources for the immediate management of several life threatening pediatric emergencies

Discuss evaluations of common endocrine problems using high yield laboratory and radiologic studies

Analyze the difference between orbital cellulitis and preseptal cellulitis and learn why and how to identify anisocoria

Handouts - In our continuing effort to be green, this symposium will not provide printed presentation handouts for attendees. Community Resource Room - Primary care providers need a working understanding of community resources to provide medical homes for families. Built into the schedule are specific breaks, giving attendees time to visit our exhibitors in the Community Room where personnel will be available to help increase understanding of the services their group can provide. Come learn more about your community, enjoy some refreshments, and share ideas. We also welcome a variety of local and national pharmaceutical and device companies. We encourage you to stop by and get to know them.

Evaluations and CME Credit - Evaluations will be sent to you via email after the conference to all registered participants. CME credit and certificates will be processed throught the IUSM CME office. Be sure to provide an email address during the registration process.

Recognize and diagnose common anatomic pediatric urology problems and explain the appropriate radiographic evaluation for urinary tract infections and hydronephrosis and discern what constitutes a urologic emergency.
