OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Arise, Shine, For Your Light Has Come” Allen PoteWestminster Choir

Brian Carter, baritone

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Arise, and shine like the sun; and all nations shall come, and all kings will be drawn to the brightness of your rising. The sun shall no longer be your light, nor the brightness of the moon by night. But the Lord shall be your everlasting light, your God will be your everlasting light.

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLEWe come to the table as children of God.

We share a common faith and a common desire. We come to be transformed into new people who live according to the loving spirit of Christ.

May Christ transform us and bring us peace.

HYMN “Blest Are God’s Peacemaking Ones” SALZBURG

Blest are God’s peacemaking ones, Bless-ed are God’s prophets, too,Sent to work in countless ways- Called to challenge what we know.God’s own daughters, God’s own sons, Working for a world that’s new,Serving without seeking praise. Calling us to change and grow.Yet like leaven in our bread, Though the message that they bearThey persist to change us all. Stands against what powers say-By God’s Spirit, they are led It is Jesus’ word they share,To pursue God’s peaceful call. News of God’s new breaking day.

God, through Jesus’ love and grace,May we live what we profess.

4

In the challenges we face, May we know what makes us blest.May we stand against the wrong;May our thirst for you increase.Give to us a prophet’s song!

May we work to bring your peace!

The rosebud at the side of the pulpit this morning is in celebration of the birth of James Arden Hearn, born November 23, son of Gina Campanella and Jim Hearn and brother to Miles and Autumn. We welcome this child into the Westminster family.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Available dates for flowers are January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected].)

This week we pray for Those known to the WPC Community presently serving in the Middle East:

Invest in the future of Delaware Children. The Division of Family Services in partnership with the State Office of Volunteerism is looking for Mentor Volunteers to serve children aging out of the Foster Care system. Volunteer Mentors would teach life skills, such as how to: balance a check book, rent an apartment, learn to interview and develop a budget. A few hours a month could make a huge difference in helping these young men and women with independent living skills towards a brighter future. Training is offered to Volunteer Mentors prior to working with young people. To find out more about how you can make a difference, and become a trusted friend to someone who needs one, please contact Andy Kloepfer at [email protected].

MUSIC

Joy to the World: Westminster Choir CD goes on sale today. In answer to popular request, we recently made a professional recording of some of our favorite carols and anthems for the Christmas season. The CD selections include music from Handel’s Messiah, anthems by John Rutter, traditional carols, and the anthem by Allen Pote heard at this morning’s 9 o’clock service. Selling price is $15, and proceeds help finance the choir’s upcoming tour to Germany. Look for the “sales stations” around the building between services this morning.

Christmas Concert next Sunday, December 13, 4:00 p.m. This year’s program features the Westminster Choir, soloists, string orchestra, and organ in two Italian Baroque settings of the Magnificat, as well as offerings from the Reverberations Handbell Choir, and some traditional carols for everyone to join in singing. No admission charge; free-will offering. Child-care provided. Come early for best seating!

December Mission Emphasis: “Sharing Our Plenty”

The Christmas season is filled with wonderful traditions. At Westminster, we emphasize “Sharing Our Plenty” with those less fortunate than we. Perhaps you donate food for the Christmas Boxes that will feed 135 neighboring families. Perhaps you take a star from the tree and purchase a gift for someone who might not otherwise receive one. Another significant way that you can reach out as an essential part of our community of faith is to make a financial contribution to our Christmas Eve Offering, taken up each year and dedicated to outreach ministries for those in need.

HELP – NOT ENOUGH FOOD YET

We need food to fill the Christmas Boxes for 135 families in need.

Canned yams – we have 13 cans; total needed 260 Canned corn – we have 116 cans; total needed 260 Canned green beans – we have 179; total needed 300 Canned cranberries – we have 130; total needed 160 Stuffing – we have 80 packages; total needed 160 Canned fruit cocktail – we have 29; total needed 260

We count on you to share with your neighbors in need and make Christmas the holiday we all can enjoy. Come help pack the Christmas Boxes on Friday, December 18 at 6:00 p.m. in Community Hall. Thanks!

TOO MANY STARS

Our Christmas trees have moved – one is outside Under Six; the other is in Community Hall. Alas, they have too many stars! There are many stars remaining with adult gifts. For gift ideas, please see the red brochures next to each tree. Please take a star, buy a gift, wrap it, tape the star to the package, and bring it to church by December 13th. Brighten Christmas for someone and yourself because of your generous heart.

2009 CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING

A tradition for as long as any of us can remember, Westminster has collected a special offering each December, dedicated to helping those in need in our community and around the globe.

This year we recognize….1) ….the overwhelming pressure on local food programs as more and more of our neighbors suffer from too little to eat: 50% of your offering will go to local meal programs and food pantries;2) ….that families with children are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population in our community: 25% of your offering will support our new Family Promise ministry, through which we will provide shelter, food and fellowship here at Westminster during 4 weeks each year;3) ….the economic pressures we feel are magnified in Congo and Guatemala: 25% of your offering will support economic and nutrition projects, as well as peacemaking efforts.
