May 15, 2007, will long be re-membered as not only a daythe University lost its Founder

and Chancellor, but the record bookswill show it was also the day the Athlet-ics Department saw its No. 1 fan passaway when Dr. Jerry Falwell went hometo be with the Lord.

Dr. Falwell, one of the greatest vision-aries of the 20th century, often said therewere two avenues by which he was go-ing to grow a world-class University –music and athletics – knowing these twofocal points speak the most to the youthof every generation.

From the moment Lynchburg BaptistCollege opened its doors in 1971, meet-ing with 154 students in class-rooms atThomas Road Baptist Church in Lynch-burg, Va., Dr. Falwell quickly imple-mented plans to field athletics programs.

In 1972, the Flames gained affiliationwith the National Christian CollegiateAthletic Association and the Universityfielded its first team, men’s basketball, which posted a 7-1 record during its firstseason of competition. Shortly there-after, the University began to add pro-grams, starting with football in 1973.

During subsequent years, Liberty’sathletics programs began to move upthe collegiate ladder, from NCCAA toNAIA until the Flames became a full-fledged NCAA Division I member onSept. 1, 1988.

Liberty now fields 18 NCAA Division Iathletics programs which compete at thehighest level of intercollegiate competi-tion, fulfilling Dr. Falwell’s vision of being“Champions for Christ” in whatever fieldof calling the Lord leads.

Although individuals from the outsideworld will remember Dr. Jerry Falwell asa conservative televangelist who ener-gized the nation and the world to returnto God, the thousands of student-ath-letes who have donned a Flames uni-form over the three decades will re-member him as their top supporter.

Dr. Falwell rarely missed a home foot-ball or basketball game, overlooking theFlames’ gridiron battles from the pressbox at Williams Stadium or in the firstrow opposite the team benches at theVines Center.

It wasn’t strange to catch a glimpse ofDr. Falwell sitting in the dugout at homesoftball games or on the benches whileLiberty was on the pitch playing soccer.

And those trying to reach Dr. Falwell dur-ing a sunny spring Central Virginia af-ternoon had to walk down the hill fromhis office at the “Mansion,” as he wouldnormally be at Worthington Stadium, with a hot dog and drink in hand, cheer-ing his baseball boys to victory.

Dr. Falwell’s attendance at an athleticevent spurred numerous Liberty teamsto victory and quickly energized acrowd, who responded with the infa-mous “JERR-EE” chant. During the late90s, the daring and larger-than-life char-acter would regularly walk across theVines Center floor, climbing atop apacked student section, where Flamesfanatics would “crowd surf” their heroicleader.

But a Dr. Falwell sighting at a Flamesathletic event was not just limited to Lib-erty Mountain, as he could also be seenfollowing the Flames’ athletic teamsaround the country.

Dr. Falwell was one of the last peopleto grab a piece of the cherished netwhen the men’s basketball team claimedthe Big South title down in Charleston,S.C., in 1994, followed by Liberty push-ing No. 1 North Carolina to the brink inthe opening round of the NCAA Tourna-ment.

He was also the proudest of theFlames’ faithful sitting courtside in Col-lege Park, Md., when the Lady Flamesbasketball program made their Cin-derella Run to the Sweet 16 in 2005, ar-guably the most notable achievement inathletics department history.

During 2006, Dr. Falwell saw the re-vival of his precious Flames football pro-gram when Liberty posted the nation’sNo. 1 turnabout, shattering program at-tendance records in the process.

In light of his unwavering support overthe years, the Athletics Department cer-emonially retired a No. 71 football jerseyat Liberty University’s annual home-coming game on Oct. 14, 2006 – bring-ing the Williams Stadium record-settingcrowd of 15,631 to their feet with a roarof approval.

And although he no longer physicallywill roam the sidelines at Flames athlet-ics events, Dr. Falwell’s presence willnever be forgotten. His legacy andcharge to be a “Champion for Christ”will live on as long as Liberty student-athletes take to the field of competition.

The Athletics Department honored Dr. Falwell by ceremonially retiringa No. 71 jersey during the halftime of Liberty’s Homecoming game onOctober 14, 2006.
