    Connecting Your Speakers

Thanks to the AV receivers superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound with a real sense of movement in yourown homejust like being in a movie theater or concert hall. You can enjoy DVDs featuring Dolby Digital or DTS.With analog or digital TV, you can enjoy Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS Neo:6, or Onkyos original DSP listening modes. You can also enjoy THX Surround EX (THX-certied THX speaker system recommended).

Surround back left and right speakersThese speakers are necessary to enjoy Dolby DigitalEX, DTS-ES Matrix, DTS-ES Discrete, THX SurroundEX, etc. They enhance the realism of surround soundand improve sound localization behind the listener. Posi-tion them behind the li stener a bout 23 feet(60100 cm) above ear level.

Surround left and right speakersThese speakers are used for precisesound positioning and to add realisticambience.Position them at the sides of the lis-tener, or slightly behind, about 23 feet(60100 cm) above ear level. Ideallythey should be equally spaced from thelistener.

Center speakerThis speaker enhances the front leftand right speakers, making sound

movements distinct and providing afull sound image. For movies its usedmainly for dialog.Position it close to your TV (preferablyon top) facing forward at about earlevel, or at the same height as thefront left and right speakers.

SubwooferThe subwoofer handles the bass sounds ofthe LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) channel. The volume and quality of the bass outputfrom your subwoofer will depend on its posi-tion, the shape of your listening room, andyour listening position. In general, a good basssound can be obtained by installing the sub-woofer in a front corner, or at one-third the wayalong the front wall, as shown.

Tip: To nd the best position for your sub-woofer, while playing a movie or some music

with good bass, experiment by placing yoursubwoofer at various positions within theroom and choose theone that providesthe most satisfyingresults.

Front left and right speakersThese output the main sound. Their role in a home theater is to provide a solidanchor for the sound image. They should be positioned facing the listener atabout ear level, and equally spaced from the TV. Angle them inward slightly soas to create a triangle, with the listener at the apex.

    Speaker Conguration

For the best surround-sound experience, you should con-nect seven speakers and a powered subwoofer. The following table shows which channels you shoulduse based on the number of speakers you have.

    * If youre using only one surround back speaker, connect it to theSURR BACK L terminals.

No matter how many speakers you use, a powered sub-woofer is recommended for a powerful and solid bass.To get the best from your surround-sound system, youmust set the speaker settings. You can do this automati-cally (seepage 55) or manually (seepage 86).

Using Dipole Speakers You can use dipole speakers for the surround left andright and surround back left and right speakers. Dipolespeakers output the same sound in two directions.Dipole speakers typically have an arrow printed on them toindicate how they should be positioned. The surround leftand right dipole speakers should be positioned so that theirarrows point toward your TV or screen, while the surroundback left and right dipolar speakers should be positionedso that their arrows point toward each other, as shown.

    Connecting a Powered Subwoofer

Using a suitable cable, connect the AV receivers SUB-WOOFER PRE OUT to the input on your powered sub-woofer. If your subwoofer is unpowered and youreusing an external amplier, connect the SUBWOOFER

PRE OUT to the amps input.

    Attaching the Speaker Labels

The AV receivers positive (+) speaker terminals arecolor-coded for ease of identication. (The negative ()speaker terminals are all black.)

The supplied speaker labels are also color-coded and youshould attach them to the positive (+) side of eachspeaker cable in accordance with the above table. All youneed to do then is to match the color of each label to thecorresponding speaker terminal.

    Speaker Connection Precautions

Read the following before connecting your speakers: You can connect speakers with an impedance of

between 4 and 16 ohms. If the impedance of any of theconnected speakers is 4 ohms or more but less than 6,be sure to set the speaker impedance to 4 ohms (seepage 45). If you use speakers with a lower impedance, and use the amplier at high volume levels for a longperiod of time, the built-in amp protection circuit maybe activated.

Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet beforemaking any connections.

Read the instructions supplied with your speakers. Pay close attention to speaker wiring polarity. Connect

positive (+) terminals to only positive (+) terminals, and negative () terminals to only negative () termi-nals. If you get them the wrong way around, the soundwill be out of phase and will sound unnatural.

Unnecessarily long or very thin speaker cables mayaffect the sound quality and should be avoided.

Be careful not to short thepositive and negative wires.Doing so may damage the AVreceiver.

Dont connect more than onecable to each speaker termi-nal. Doing so may damage theAV receiver.

Dont connect a speaker to several terminals.

    Connecting the Speaker Cables

The following illustration shows which speaker should be connected to each pair of terminals. If youre using only one surround back speaker, connect it to the SURR BACK L terminals.

1 Strip about 5/8" (15mm) of insulation fromthe ends of thespeaker cables, andtwist the bare wires

    tightly, as shown.

    2 Unscrew the terminal.

5/8" (15 mm) 3 Fully insert the bare wire.

    4 Screw the terminal tight.

    Connecting Antennas Continued

If you cannot achieve good reception with the suppliedindoor FM antenna, try a commercially available out-door FM antenna instead.

Notes: Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, but usable

results can sometimes be obtained when installed in anattic or loft.

For best results, install the outdoor FM antenna wellaway from tall buildings, preferably with a clear lineof sight to your local FM transmitter.

Outdoor antenna should be located away from possi-ble noise sources, such as neon signs, busy roads, etc.

For safety reasons, outdoor antenna should be situatedwell away from power lines and other high-voltageequipment.

Outdoor antenna must be grounded in accordancewith local regulations to prevent electrical shock haz-ards.

Using a TV/FM Antenna SplitterIts best not to use the same antenna for both FM and TVreception, as this can cause interference problems. If cir-cumstances demand it, use a TV/FM antenna splitter, asshown.

If good reception cannot be achieved using the suppliedAM loop antenna, an outdoor AM antenna can be used inaddition to the loop antenna, as shown.

Outdoor AM antennas work best when installed horizon-tally outside, but good results can sometimes be obtainedindoors by mounting horizontally above a window. Note

that the AM loop antenna should be left connected.Outdoor antenna must be grounded in accordance withlocal regulations to prevent electrical shock hazards.

    Connecting Your Components

Before making any AV connections, read the manualssupplied with your other AV components.

Dont connect the power cord until youve completedand double-checked all AV connections.

    Optical Digital Jacks

The AV receivers optical digital jacks have shutter-typecovers that open when an optical plug is inserted andclose when its removed. Push plugs in all the way.

Caution: To prevent shutter damage, hold the opticalplug straight when inserting and removing.

    AV Connection Color Coding

RCA-type AV connections are usually color coded: red, white, and yellow. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled R).Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and

outputs (typically labeled L). And use yellow plugs toconnect composite video inputs and outputs.

Push plugs in all the way to makegood connections (loose connec-tions can cause noise or malfunc-tions).

To prevent interference, keepaudio and video cables away frompower cords and speaker cables.

    Cable Jack Description

HDMIHDMI connections can carry uncompressed stan-dard- or high-denition digital video and audio andoffer the best picture and sound quality.

    Componentvideo cable

Component video separates the luminance (Y) andcolor difference signals (PR, PB), providing the bestpicture quality. (Some TV manufacturers label theircomponent video jacks slightly differently.)

S-Video cableS-Video separates the luminance and color signalsand provides better picture quality than compositevideo.

    Compositevideo cable

Composite video is commonly used on TVs, VCRs,and other video equipment.

    Audio

    Optical digitalaudio cable

This offers the best sound quality and allows you toenjoy Dolby Digital and DTS. The audio quality isthe same as for coaxial.

    Coaxial digitalaudio cable

This offers the best sound quality and allows you toenjoy Dolby Digital and DTS. The audio quality isthe same as for optical.

    Analog audiocable (RCA)

This cable carries analog audio. Its the mostcommon connection format for analog audio andcan be found on virtually all AV components.

    Multichannelanalog audiocable (RCA)

This cable carries multichannel analog audio and istypically used to connect DVD players with a 7.1-

channel analog audio output. Several standardanalog audio cables can be used instead of a multi-channel cable.

    Connecting Your Components Continued

By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your DVD player and other AV components to the AV receiver, youcan switch the audio and video signals simultaneously simply by changing the input source on the AV receiver.

The AV receiver supports several connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The formatyou choose will depend on the formats supported by your other components. Use the following sections as a guide. For video components, you must make an audio connection and a video connection.

    Video Connection Formats

Video equipment can be connected to the AV receiver by using any one of the following video connection formats:composite video, S-Video, component video, or HDMI, the latter offering the best picture quality.

The AV receiver can upconvert and downconvert between video formats, depending on the HDMI Monitor setting, which generally determines whether video signals are upconverted for the component video output or the HDMI outputFor optimal video performance, THX recommends that video signals pass through the system without upconver-sion (e.g., component video input through to component video output). Its also recommended that you set theImmediate Display preference to Off ( page 97 ).

HDMI Monitor Setting Set to YesWith the HDMI Monitor setting set to Yes (seepage 46), video input signals ow through theAV receiver as shown, with composite video,S-Video, and component video sources allbeing upconverted for the HDMI output. Usethis setting if you connect the AV receiversHDMI OUT to your TV.The composite video, S-Video, and componentvideo outputs pass through their respectiveinput signals as they are.

HDMI Monitor Setting Set to NoWith the HDMI Monitor setting set to No (seepage 46), video input signals ow through theAV receiver as shown, with composite videoand S-Video sources being upconverted for thecomponent video output. Use this setting if youconnect the AV receivers COMPONENTVIDEO OUT to your TV.Composite video is upconverted to S-Videoand S-Video is downconverted to compositevideo. Note that these conversions only applyto the MONITOR OUT V and S outputs, notthe VCR/DVR OUT V and S outputs. The composite video, S-Video, and componentvideo pass through their respective input sig-nals as they are.On the TX-SR875, this signal ow also applieswhen the Monitor Out Resolution setting is setto Through (seepage 46).

Video Signal Flow and the Resolution SettingOn the TX-SR875, when the HDMI Monitorsetting is set to No (seepage 46), if the MonitorOut Resolution setting is set to anything otherthan Through (seepage 46), the video signalow will be as shown here, with compositevideo and S-Video sources being upconverted

for the component video output. The composite video, S-Video, and componentvideo outputs pass through their respectiveanalog input signals as they are. HDMI inputsignals are not output.

    Audio Connection Formats

Audio equipment can be connected to the AVreceiver by using any of the following audioconnection formats: analog, optical, coaxial, analog multichannel, or HDMI.When choosing a connection format, bear inmind that the AV receiver does not convert dig-ital input signals for analog line outputs andvice versa. For example, audio signals con-nected to an optical or coaxial digital input arenot output by the analog TAPE OUT.
