Long after employees of Chatsworth Park South hadbeen ordered to evacuate by the Fire Marshall, onegardener named Alberto Gomez decided to stay toprotect his special park grounds. For endlesshours while fire trucks and crews were battlingthe flames from their command post at Rocky Peakchurch, Alberto raced around adjusting sprinklersand canceling shut-off valves. He dragged hosesand a make-shift pipe rig towards the oldest treein the park where he made his stand. To-day, the500 year old Inland Oak still stands in all itsglory just northeast of the recreation center.Our heartfelt thanks to you Alberto!

THE FIRE WE WILL NEVm FORGETLate each evening around midnight when the air is very still,a waft of scorched smelling air seems to sit in the neighbor­hood where I live" It is a nightly reminder of how fortunatemost of us in Chatsworth really are. After starting near the118 freeway at Rocky Peak road it engulfed all of the parkland.on a southern route bef.ore being contained near Plummer.The hills and the flat lands area solid mass of black. Notmuch more. • • • just the color black everywhere. But.. •surprise, surprise! The large cistern has been re-discoveredwith a small trickle of water steadily flowing into it whichcould possibly be from an underground well. This is thefirst time in 20 years the cistern has been seen! And manytrails campletly hidden by years of overgrown foliage havebeen exposed. for the first time in years. Unbelievably, ourconcern of how to clear the debris from these trails has beensolved. And already little spouts of green can be seencoming back to lifeo

A note to everyone who has ever hiked over these hills: thisis a one in a lifetime (hopefully) chance to experience thetranquil serenity only Mother Nature can explain. Guidedhikes will be led by Sierra Club trained leaders this comingSunday starting at 9:am from the Visitor's center in Chatsw­orth Park soueh, See the remains of a 30 G wall we did'ntknow existed.
