WHAT’S YOUR STORY?
Al Jones
I love eulogies. Don’t get me wrong, folks, I don’t enjoy saying goodbye to friends or loved ones; I grieve with the loss just as everyone else does. But I always feel better after hearing the final eulogy. It’s like a summary of their lives. It brings about an appreciation of what we are losing, as well as what legacy they leave to those of us that they leave behind. It is like hearing the final chapter of a good story about a good person.
People often ask me where I get the inspiration for my stories and editorials. I get them from people. Real, live people. Everyone has a story, even if they don’t recognize the story within themselves. Every story begins with a first breath and ends with a final breath. We don’t control that. It’s all the breaths in between that make each of us have different content within the chapters of our lives. That… we control.
I had a business professor once tell me that no one should ever go into a business without knowing how they would get out of it. Essentially, he was trying to make his students understand that no business can last forever if you didn’t plan for your own exit. He actually made his students plan their exit and work backwards. This forced his students to plan. It forced them to

insert certain actions and or strategies to ensure the outcome they had already committed themselves to. It forced them to acknowledge the fact that, if they did not share their experiences with someone else and did not mentor others along the way, that their business would die with them and there would be no legacy of that business beyond their own final breaths.
I believe we should insert that same strategy within our own lives. I think we should all take time to sit back and write the final passage of our own individual stories. What do we want our ending to look like? What do we want our personal legacy to be? What do we want to be remembered for? By know-ing what we want our final chapter to look like, we can then work backwards and decide how we should live so as to ensure the outcome that we want.
If we see ourselves living well into our golden years, we know that we must plan and save so as to pay for those years. If our desire is to travel, then we must plan for those monies to be available as well. If we hope to be the favorite grandparent, then we must ensure we have excellent relationships with our children so as to ensure that they desire visiting often, and that we are welcome in their homes. If we see ourselves as future mentors, sharing our wisdom learned through experience with younger generations, then we must acknowledge and make note of those experiences, both bad and good.
Not everything will go according to the script we write for ourselves. There will be unexpected plot twists as we try to bring each chapter to fruition. There will, no doubt, be unplanned obstacles and hardships endured. But by knowing how we want our next chapter to read, we can adjust accordingly. We can alter the rest of the script to ensure the ending we desire.
Here’s a challenge to our readers; take the time to write your own eulogy. I’m assuming that no one would write, “He was a bitter old coot with a mean streak” or “She was the most unpleasant woman to deal with and impossible to please”. Because that’s not how most of us would want to be remembered. If we want our eulogy to read, “He was a kind and generous man” or “She was a well-respected woman who always handled herself with grace”, then we know to work backwards from our desired ending and act appropriately. If we want to be remembered as kind, then the chapters before our ending should be filled with acts of kindness. If we want to be remembered for our generos-ity, then the chapters of our lives should be filled with instances of lending a helping hand when needed and sharing our time with others.
No one is too young to write their own ending. In fact, if most of us had done so in our youth, perhaps we would have avoided many poor choices along the way as we each live the story that is our lives. For those of us who may not be particularly proud of past chapters, the good news is that we can all begin the next chapter anytime we want. We can all have the desired ending by taking the opportunity of adjusting the future passages of our lives. Everyone loves a happy ending.

Q:A:
How does a Realtor help with negotiating an offer to purchase?
- Gary and Crystal AdamoSend your Real Estate related questions to:
The negotiation process of real estate can be a very turbulent ride. It is an emotional process when it comes to money, and sometimes it can get very
heated. While it seems trivial to have a REALTOR® proxy the negotiation, it is very important in getting a deal. A REALTOR® is able to filter out tactics designed to evoke an emotional response, such as "The place needs renos," or "Not sure if it’s really worth the money," and present you with just the bare facts. Without a REALTOR®, sometimes being put on the spot can really throw you off. How would you re-spond if asked: "There is water damage, why would you hide this? I want $10,000 off or I won't waive my conditions. "Your possible reactions: "You're crazy. I'm not paying anything!", or "I thought we had a deal?" This conversation can go south really quick, but a REALTOR® can address issues like this without jeopardizing the transaction: "My client probably wasn't aware, let me bring this back to them and we can figure out a workable arrangement."
Now we've bought time to decide what we'd like to do, we can respond accordingly: Call their bluff. Seek out some interested parties and respond with "At this time, we have other interested parties and will not be providing any concessions." Split the cost. Respond with "My client has sought out some quotes and found a reasonable one at $X. We're willing to split this cost in trade for waiver of this clause." Fix the issue. Respond with "My client acknowledges the issue and will repair this prior to closing."
A good REALTOR® will give crafted and thought out responses that will provide a clear stance, and help move the transaction through without the need for emotional interference.

ToleranceBeing tolerant is accepting differences. You don’t expect others to think, look, speak or act just like you. You are free of prejudice, knowing that all people
have feelings, needs, hopes and dreams. Tolerance is also accepting things
you wish were different with patience and flexibility.
You are practicing tolerance when you…
• Build unity with others who are different from you.
• Are free of prejudice• Make others feel included by reaching
out in friendliness• Don’t complain about things that
cannot be changed• Change yourself instead of trying to
change others• Accept people the way they are, faults
and all
AffirmationI am tolerant. I appreciate differences.I overlook people’s faults. I accept the
things I cannot change with good grace.

Charm Bracelet
I was reminded of my younger days when I came across my charm bracelet one morning. I decided to wear it to school, thinking it would do the same for some of my teacher colleagues. However, the bracelet fascinated my students.
One of my fifth grade students watched the shiny, jingling items on my wrist for a few minutes, then put his hand up and asked, “Are you on a major medical alert?”
“Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. The question is whether or not
we are in touch with it. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.”
― Thich Nhat Hanh
Chess Playing Dog
A man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess with his dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while.
“I can hardly believe my eyes!” he exclaimed. “That’s the smartest dog I’ve ever seen.”
“Nah, he’s not so smart,” the friend replied. “I’ve beaten him three games out of five.”

First Date
Two men are talking. One asks, “I know you’re crazy about that
little daughter of yours. What are you going to do when she starts
to date?”
The other says, “I figure I’ll take the first young man aside, put my
arm around his shoulder, and pull him close so that only he can
hear. Then I’ll say, ‘Do you see that sweet, little young lady? She’s
my only daughter, and I love her very much. If you were thinking
about touching, kissing, or being physically affectionate to her in
any way ..... just remember ..... I don’t mind going back to prison.’”
Drama Class
During a performance for the high school drama class at the local theater, a hole was cracked in the stage floor. Subsequent acts managed to avoid the damaged area until little Freddy, juggling bowling pins, accidentally stepped through the hole up to his knee.
He apologized to the audience for his clumsiness. But a heckler in the back of the theater shouted: “Don’t worry, Freddy! It’s just a stage you’re going through!”
Get Better SoonA retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in nursing homes and hospitals went to one local hospital in Calgary and took his portable keyboard along. He told some jokes and sang some funny songs at patients’ bedsides.
When he finished he said, in farewell, “I hope you get better.”One elderly gentleman replied, “I hope you get better, too.”

Teenage Logic
When our youngest daughter, Diane, was 14, she began to question some of our house rules; as a result, many arguments ensued. During one such argument, she told us, “When I’m 16, I am out of here. Then you will be sorry. That will show you!”
“If you do go, honey,” I said, “I hope you’ll be happy.”
“Well, I hope I’ll be miserable,” Diane replied, “Because that would really bug you.”

Meeting the Deadline
My engineer husband is meticulous but mild-man-
nered. While our new house was being built, he would
leave notes for the workmen, politely calling their at-
tention to mistakes or oversights.
Two weeks before we were to move in, the floors still
were not finished, the bathrooms not tiled, nor were nec-
essary fixtures installed. I was sure that the work would never be
completed in time. However, on moving day, we found that the
house was ready to receive us.
Curious as to how this miracle had been accomplished, I went and
checked where my husband always left his notes for the workmen.
Posted prominently on the living room wall was my husband’s last
note: “After January 15, all work will be supervised by 5 children.”
War
The social studies teacher had just finished a unit on war and
peace. “How many of you,” he asked, “would say you’re opposed to
war?” Not surprisingly, all hands went up.
The teacher asked, “who’ll give us the reason for being opposed to
war?” A large, bored-looking boy in the back of the room raised
his hand. “Johnny?” The teacher said.
“I hate war,” Johnny said, “because wars make history,
and I hate history.”

Recycle
Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year-old daughter asked me to start
recycling. I chuckled and asked, “Why?”
She replied, “So you can help me save the planet.”
I chuckled again and asked, “And why do you want to save the
planet?” “Because that’s where I keep all my stuff,” she said.
You deserve the best, so remind yourself to get busy and create

Bilingual
Three mice were being chased by a cat.
The mice were cornered when one of the mice turned around and
barked, “Ruff! Ruff! Ruff!” The surprised cat ran away scared.
Later when the mice told their mother what happened, she smiled
and said, “You see, it pays to be bilingual!”

Celebrate Family Literacy Day this January
Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27th to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging Canadian families to have “15 Minutes of Fun” learning together this Family Literacy Day. Learning can happen at any time. Practicing literacy together every day has tremendous benefits for both children and parents. Here are some great ways to getstarted:1. Read a “wake up” story in the morning (after reading your
bedtime story the night before).2. Search online for fun places to go in your community. Pick
out a spot for your next family day trip.3. Make up a new recipe together and post it online.4. Tell knock-knock jokes together while doing the dishes.5. Create a story with your family: take turns writing one
sentence at a time, then read the whole story aloud when you’re done.
6. Write a review of a book you read together as a family. Send it to the author through email or snail mail.
7. Organize a book swap at your school or with your friends.8. Track your trip to school, the park, and the grocery store
on a map. Find a different route to take to each place.9. Learn to play a musical instrument. What about the
ukulele?10. Write a note to include in a grown-up’s lunch - ask them
to write back!11. Make a popsicle stick model with your family.12. Write your names graffiti-style using chalk on your side-
walk - you may need to shovel first!13. Play a board game together.14. Look up the words to your favourite song online. Have a
sing-off with your friends!15. Count how many steps it takes to get from your bedroom
to your kitchen. Find out who in your family has the most steps to a snack!
For more information about this initiative, or ways to get involved, visit: FamilyLiteracyDay.ca or follow ABC on [email protected].

BEiSEKER SCHOOL REUNiON COMMiTTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
The Beiseker Community School has a big anniversary to celebrate!! The Beiseker Consolidated School opened its doors in September of 1914 and completed the year in June of 1915. A group of dedicated volunteers has decided that this occasion cannot go without suitable celebration and is planning a fun-filled reunion event June 12-14, 2015 in Beiseker. The biggest challenge in hosting an event of this magnitude is contacting past students, staff (including teachers, administrative staff, bus drivers) and trustees, to make them aware of the event and to gain contact information to deliver registra-tion information. It is important to have attendees register in advance so the committee can successfully plan events and prepare venues.
As you can imagine compiling lists of students and staff from the past 100 years is daunting, add to the fact that historical records were destroyed in a fire in 1952 and then add current privacy laws into the mix and the job becomes even more of a challenge! The committee has been able to obtain fairly good graduating class lists for years after 1964 and are in the process of finding class representatives for each year, but don’t have any records available prior to this date. Of course, the reunion would like to include any and all students who attended - you didn’t have to graduate at the school to think you are invited! Staff including teachers, administrators, librarians, janitors, bus drivers, trustees and anyone else who has any interest in attending is definitely welcome and encouraged to register!!! If anyone has information they would like to share or if they would be able to help contact their classmates please contact the reunion committee via email at [email protected] or by Facebook message on the Facebook page “Beiseker School 100 Year Reunion” or by mail: Beiseker School Reunion Committee, Box 505, Beiseker, AB, T0M 0G0. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Don’t you just hate those days where you wake up in a bad mood, or those days when you wake up feeling totally fine but then something bad happens that sets your mood off for the rest of the day? Or those days where you get the worst news you have ever heard and it puts you into immediate sadness or anger?
It’s easy to say, “I hate my life” or “Why me?” and it is really easy to give up on days like these. The hardest part is when you’re having a terrible day like that but you force yourself to put on a fake smile and walk around as if nothing is wrong. You try so hard to hide your pain, to put away your tears, and to set a positive example for the people around you, but at what point can you break down and finally let your emotions loose?
It’s okay to break down, and it is alright to need a day or a few to regroup after something bad happens to you. We all have bad days but when it’s our turn for a bad day, we tend to forget that it’s a 24-hour period before you get a brand new day to try again. Some weeks are easier than others, and some things
take longer to get through. I know that when you get bad news, it can take time to heal, and it can really alter the way you look at your day... but I just want to remind you of one thing: you’re having a bad day, that does not mean it’s a bad life. You will get through these hard times, and you will come out stronger than you ever have been. Do not hate your life because of a few dark hours. Tomorrow is a new day, a new start and a fresh beginning. You have the choice to wake up and be grateful for the day, or you can wake up and dread the day. Attitude is something that shows no matter how hard you try to hide it. Your posture, the way your eyes light up when you smile, the way you laugh, how you treat others, how quiet you are that day... all of these things are determined from how you look at your life. If you do not like your life, change it. If you cannot change it, then get a new perspective. This is your life, and you make your own decisions; everyday is a blessing. You have the honour of waking up in the morning and living your life to the fullest, but that’s a choice you need to make. Never give up because you had a bad day, there are a lot of days in a year, and one bad day does not make a bad life.
Chip off the Ole Block...A BAD DAY DOESN’T MEAN A BAD LiFE
~ Dana Jones

PETS
Hi there my name is Alley, I am an eight month old, spayed female kitten that likes to rule the roost. I like everybody as long as they follow My rules-- I do not like back talk from dogs, other cats or humans!! Do not get me wrong I am not mean about this but I can pester until they listen to me because -- well I am a female kitten. All of my vaccinations are up to date and I am perfectly healthy, I found the good people at BAIL US OUT!! when I was wan-dering the streets of Calgary so that they could take care of me and make sure that I stayed healthy--pretty smart of me (he-he). Now I need to begin my search for my forever home. My forever home that I adopt: will have some older children(8yrs-15yrs) that will play with me, I will have a human that will cuddle with me when my favourite T.V. shows are on and of course I will need my very private sleeping place where I will not be disturbed. If you think that may be able to provide my wish list please call 403-890-0911.
