Baby Birds by Kendrick West

Build BackgroundRead the title to children and talk with them about the cover. Provide additional information by pointing out that the birds in the photo are called barn swallows, and they often make their nests inside barns, under bridges, and in old buildings. Prepare children to read about the family of birds by asking questions like these: What would you like to know about the birds in this photo? What would you say if you saw this bird family near your home?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so that they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Tell children that this book shows how baby birds are born and how they grow up.Suggested language: Turn to page 2. What can you see in this photo? What are the two birds building? They are building a nest because they will have baby birds soon. Say baby. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in baby? Find the word and put your fi nger under it.

Page 4: Turn to page 4. The last sentence reads: The mother and father keep the eggs warm until the babies hatch. Look closely at the photo. How do they keep the eggs warm? Find the word until. Point to each part of until as I say it: un-til.

Page 5: Look at the picture. The baby bird is ready to hatch out of the egg. The second sentence reads: An egg begins to move. Point to the word begins in the second sentence. What begins to crack the shell with its beak?

Now turn back to the beginning of the book to learn about the baby birds that hatch from the eggs.

Words to KnowHave children turn to the Words to Know at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

ReadAs the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: What will you remember about the baby birds in this book?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Mother and father birds build a nest, and the mother lays eggs in it.

• The mother and father birds keep the eggs warm until the baby birds hatch.

• The baby birds grow feathers and learn to fl y.

• Baby birds need their parents to take care of them until they can fl y on their own.

• It would be exciting to see a baby bird hatch from an egg or learn to fl y.

• Every kind of baby needs to get food and stay safe.

• The writer tells a true story about the life of birds.

• The writer starts each page with the same words.

• The photos show some things that happen too fast for you to see in real life, like a bird fl ying.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintUse the sentences on page 10 of Baby Birds to explain that readers should stop at the end of a sentence, not at the end of a line. Have children point out the two kinds of end marks, a period and an exclamation point. Review that an exclamation point signals strong feeling. Invite children to take turns reading the sentences aloud.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Substitute Phonemes Say a word from Baby Birds and then ask children to say the same word with a different ending sound. Words and substitute phonemes to use: will /n/ (win); mud /g/ (mug); feed /l/ (feel); hatch /m/ (ham).

• r-Controlled Vowels Display these partial words: b_ds, moth_, fath_, dang_, feath_s. Have children look through Baby Birds to fi nd and write the complete words using ir or er. Have them read the words aloud.

Writing About ReadingVocabulary PracticeRead the directions and have children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM 22.1.

RespondingHave children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11.

Building VocabularyDescribing WordsHelp children build on what they observe in the photos in Baby Birds to develop sentences with descriptive words. Suggested language: Let’s look closely at the photo on page 6. What can we tell someone about the photo? What can we say to tell what the birds and the nest look like? Think about words for color, shape, and size. Write children’s suggestions using these sentence frames: Look at the __. It is [or] They are ___.

(Sample sentences: Look at the baby bird’s mouth. It is very big. It is yellow inside. Look at the feathers. They are gray and fl uffy. Look at the nest. It is hard and made of mud.)

Have children read the sentences chorally. Then ask them to choose another photo and say more sentences like those they just read.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Draw a picture of a baby bird in its nest.

Write about what the baby bird looks like.
